REPORT: Danny Amendola and the Patriots have agreed to restructure contract

Agree. I love Edelman and I think he's as tough as they come but even he has trouble staying healthy. The NFL is a tough place to be for smaller receivers, and having redundancy at such a crucial position is critical for Brady and the offense.

Especially smaller receivers with 2 giant brass ones hanging between their legs like edelman and Amendola have.. they work the middle of the field and take some serious shots.. having both on board is fantastic news!

So....

3 WR locks on the roster, now?

I honestly thought he was a goner with malcolm mitchell getting drafted.

Edelman, amendola, hogan and mitchell look like a good group of WRs.

Not to mention other targets like gronk, bennett and lewis. :D
Yes! I am still perplexed by posters who would rather sell the horse and cart for a shiny, fast receiver that 1) just isn't available or 2) is too expensive and/or a locker room cancer. There is something to be said for a bunch of small and shifty receivers running around the middle of the field with giant TE's. Someone is gonna be open and TB12 will find them.

Clutch...

This is where metrics fail big time. Players like Amendola and Kevin Faulk don't tend to put up gaudy numbers but shine when they are called upon for critical plays at critical times. This could be as simple as getting the first down to keep a scoring drive going with 6 minutes to go down by 14 to Baltimore in what turned out to be a scoring drive to get them to within 7, or the TD in the Super Bowl. Amendola makes critical plays with they really need them and that's always hard to replace.

Hopefully his contract includes incentives for filming more COPS videos. Given the pay cut, Jules ought to be the one to pay for the production of future videos... unless they just make Ryan Allen pay for it.

staying is better than this route:

I think it's four, mgteich has pointed out numerous times that Belichick has never released a fourth round pick in their first year during his tenure here. If true Mitchell is a lock.

I was getting hammered for months on suggesting this.

DA is great. I'm glad hes here.
I wish I was getting hammered right now!! Work has been a b!tch this week.

I wonder if he is keeping the carport up in his driveway? I bet his neighbors in Providence aren't too psyched.

If you want a shiny, fast receiver there's one on the roster who's not only proven but a bargain, he's just not sexy because's he'll be 33 in August and has wallowed away on horrible teams.

For whatever reason, people seem to ignore that Nate Washington averages exactly the same yards per reception as Mike Wallace has over the course of his career (5 yards more than Edelman, Martin, or Hogan, 6 more than Amendola), and has mostly done it with horrible quarterbacks except for when he was in Pittsburgh. His yards per reception average was higher than DeAndre Hopkins last year. He's also had 40 or more catches every season since 2008, and is the picture of durability. The primary difference between Washington and Wallace is that the former can run more than a single route.

That's why I think they'll keep six receivers: Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, Mitchell, Washington, and Martin. Each of them fills a different role or contributes on special teams. People have all but written Washington off, but I don't think you can.

I hope this is the first domino to fall in an attempt to extend a couple of their prime 2017
free agents.

I think the Pats bringing in Washington, Mitchell, and Lucien says otherwise. It tells me that they knew they could upgrade from him easily.
Yes but I speculate those 3 players were leverage moves if DA negotiations went sideways.

With this level of competition it can't be.

But you're right to suggest he's a healthy favorite to make the roster.
Yea.

JE11
Hogan
DA
Martin
Mitchell

You were getting hammered for suggesting they release him, not a restructure. Releasing him made absolutely no sense when they were already done with free agency, this restructure makes all the sense in the world.

I love this, I think Amendola has played through serious injury, has been a big play player in the biggest games, and is exactly the kind of player they are looking for, and his two paycuts in two years demonstrates that.
No I pushed for a release if he did not restructure.

I wanted DA on this team- believe me...at the right price.

Everyone wanted a restructure the difference was calling for the release. I'm glad he was willing to redo his deal, I would not have wanted to go into the season with no slot option if Edelman went down again.

I was 95% sure they were just waiting for June to cute him for salary reasons cause the talks were too far apart. I am glad he is here as i didn't think this would happen. Well this is going to make it hard make the roster for a lot of guys.

I still don't see Martin getting cut but it depends on what Washington and Lucien bring.

This should put that stupid meme to bed, somewhat...

Amendola has had nagging injuries. Edelman missed most of an entire season with a foot injury he couldn't play on. That's the difference. That said, nobody is making the claim that Edelman is the picture of health and durability either.
