Scar: Thuney to play on the inside

I think they're both ideally RGs, personally. And as a prospect, I think Mason is rawer but has considerably more upside. Wouldn't surprise me if the Pats drafted Thuney with the hopes of him being the LG of the future, and Mason/Jackson fighting it out to see who (if either of them) becomes the long-term RG.

Or maybe they don't know right now and they're going to let training camp work it out. I'm fine with throwing quantity of promising talent at the problem, and letting injuries/competition sort out the depth chart. Much better than relying on any of them individually as the presumptive answer, especially when we didn't have to give up a whole lot to get any of them.

Shaq started at LG his sophomore year at GT and RG his junior and senior year. He was way more effective at RG in college, but who knows how meaningful that is since he was older, bigger and faster. This idea that Shaq is still this raw project is a myth. He was always a good run blocker and his pass blocking, which started off as totally inept, slowly improved to mediocre throughout the year. People forget this because the line in general was so awful, but Shaq played his best ball at RG in the playoffs. According to Mike Reiss, he allowed only one quarterback hit in the Denver game. Ideally, you'd want none, but considering who he was playing against and the guys on either side of him it was pretty impressive.

Shaq has tremendous athleticism and upside. Scar hasn't called me yet to ask me my opinion, but I'll bet he's our starting RG of the future and will be playing at a Pro Bowl level by year 3.

Lastly, I'll leave you with this from March:

4th round, 131st overall, OG Shaq Mason: Mason....played what were probably his best two games of the season in the playoffs.

Mason was a right guard coming out of college, so he seemed far more comfortable at that role. He's already arguably the best run blocker on the team, but his pass blocking was atrocious to start the season. While he's still not at an "average" ability in pass protection, his athleticism and potential is off the charts.

It's very possible that Mason could take the starting right guard spot and everyone will point to Mason's rookie season with the same light as when Bill Belichick tried to makeMatt Light a right tackle; sometimes a player is just perfect for one role.

If Mason is able to take over the right guard spot, that would leave Kline as the left guard, unless the Patriots bring in a veteran free agent- or maybe even allow center Bryan Stork to compete for the spot if David Andrews gains enough strength to be a viable starting center.

While Mason isn't a lock for the roster either (no 4th round sophomore is), he's a better prospect than Jackson and he's as close to a lock as you can get. His upside is fantastic and he will hopefully be blocking for quarterback Tom Brady for the next decade. linky

OL coach Dante Scarnecchia on Pats rookie OL Joe Thuney: "We drafted him to play inside, also knowing in a pinch he could help us outside."

So where are the free agent and udfa tackles?

The backup center competition could be more interesting than I had expected. They surely aren't just handing the two center jobs to Stork and Andrews, which means competition is going to have to come from guys like Mason, Cooper, and Thuney that are more often included in the guard discussion.

I guess the Pats REALLY like cannon better than the fans do

I think 2015 would have qualified for "unless disaster hits". Hopefully the 2016 OL won't suffer any catastrophic injuries.

If you rewatch the afccg you will see that Vollmer struggled just as much as Cannon. Ware had his way. To make things worse, Vollmer had help from Williams more than Cannon did. Cannon and Vollmer are almost equal so why should Cannon be flat out cut without training camp when he is younger and more durable?

As much as they struggled, the main problem was Kline. Kline has an extremely weak anchor and is borderline useless in the run game. Kline is the reason Brady couldn't step up(Stork also struggled but only in the first quarter).

Our tackles are good enough. Brady can deal with shoddy ot play but he needs good/great interior play. I don't know how much Kline's shoulder injury effected him but he had a weak anchor to begin with. If you don't believe me rewatch our 2014 playoff run and look at how clean the pocket is before he replaces an injured Wendell. Wendell is criticized for not always being stout but there is a big gap between his ability to anchor and Kline's.

I know Scar is a magician but I don't like Kline and would probably give Jackson the boot as well. Jackson hasn't shown much and his college knee issues seem to have followed him here. Thuney at LG and Cooper at right. I've seen a few Cardinal games and Cooper is already, imo, our best guard.

I'm calling it....

Vollmer T
Solder T
Waddle T
Stork C/G/T
Mason G
Jackson G
Cooper G/C
Thuney G
Cannon G or Kline G/C

I still have a hard time believing that the Pats will go into the season with Cannon when they stand to save $3.7M by cutting him. It increasingly looks like it is going to happen, though.

I have him as good as cut.

BB finally found the incriminating pics Cannon was hanging onto, for insurance.

I dunna know. I think he stays if he takes a reduction in salary. If he refuses he is sure as gonzo.

Cannon again it looks

Cannon again it looks

I wonder if we can get Anthony Davis from SF. He retired prior to last year. Now, he wants to
play. And, made it clear. Not for them. Plus, he went to Rutgers:)

It's clear that BB and company weren't happy with the Guard situation last year and have a whole bunch of players to compete with one another there. What I find interesting is the versatility of many of the players, and I think a case can be made for the team to potentially only keep 8 offensive linemen due to that versatility.

Solder - T
Vollmer - T
Cannon - T/G
Stork - C/G/T
Andrews - C
Mason - G
Cooper - G
Thuney - G/T

You've got a case where you only have 8 players, but when you think about their versatility, you've got 5 guys who can play Tackle, 5 guys who can play Guard, and two guys who can play Center (and maybe Mason can even be a Center if needed).

AN ASIDE
We really need to STOP listing Cannon as a guard.

TACKLES (3-4)
I think that Scar's comments point to the possibility that Thuney can be our, emergency, #4 OT. We have Cannon as a backup. In addition, we have Waddle and Fleming.

GUARD AND CENTER (5-6)
We know NOTHING at all, except that Belichick and Dante are not happy with last years's play. They had Stork. They brought in THREE rookies last year. Many posters thought that we were set for 4 years.

Stork and Jackson are returning from injuries.

IMHO, the only locks are Thuney and Mason.

Agreed, except I'd say the conditional spot is Jackson/Cannon.

I'm starting to think the Chandler Jones trade is going to stick in my craw just like the Deion Branch trade. I dont care if you get nothing for these guys. Use them then lose them.

Reactions: TBR
Honestly not surprised by Cannon not being cut. A lot of people forget that Cannon had a toe injury when he first replaced Solder. I don't know if that ever healed but he got moved from LT to RT and then Vollmer was moved to LT. If he returns fully healthy and Scar works his magic, Cannon just might be a serviceable swing tackle. Plus, we save the same amount of money regardless of when we cut him, might as well have him battle it out during training camp.
