So how do YOU grade the Patriots draft?

Cyrus Jones is very versatile with 4 punt return TDs along with his stand out season with Alabama. Kamu Grugier-Hill is a LB/DB prototype machine who ran a 4.4 but will need to gain some weight to be put in the MLB spot. Elandon Roberts led all of the FBS with 88 solo tackles and seems like a solid, consistent player. Devin Lucien is a late steal because he is a player who might not have burst speed and strength to over power a lot of CBs but he is a reliable receiver who only dropped 3 passes out of 98. Overall I am blown away with how strategic the Patriots were leading up to and during the draft. But, only time will tell.

All told, I give it an S. As in giving a grade is Stupid. But, c'est la vie.

Good review but let's just say I am slightly jaded when they tell me a guy rarely or never dropped a pass in college. It doesn't always translate to the NFL.. Remember Aaron Dobson supposedly never dropped a pass his last year in college and how did that work out for the Pats??? A look back at the 9 passes Aaron Dobson dropped this season (shows how they game the stats on drops)

i dont know enough about any of these guys to "grade" anything

but Bill Belichick has a track record that is unmatched, so I trust him

If this was a test, incomplete! The first page was left out by the teacher.

That is very fair, but in semi-defense of Dobson, he wasn't the only one with a case of the dropsies on this team last season. And his first season he seemed to pick things up pretty well. That Steelers game with the long TD will always stick in my mind for some reason as his "potential" never being fulfilled.

I say all this to say **** happens. Can't blame BB for at least attempting to get a ground rule double after striking out with this position in the recent past...

I'd give it a c-

Would be lower but they didon't waste a pick on keenan reynolds, which was my fear.

Brissett, nice guy, overdraft ed by about 3 rounds. Total project. Could have drafted the more ready hogan from stanford.

Valentine. Interesting. Out of shape but a good 5th 6th rounder.

Jones,great pick for 4th rounder.

Thuney, decent guard maybe, about the 7th on the team. Could use an ot. Shon coleman would have even perfect. Thuney has t Rex arms 32.5 inches, can't be an effective tackle.

Could have drafted Howard from Indiana greatt rb who fell. Or signed Peyton barber as an udfa. Barber had the lowest stuff rate in the sec. Both bigger bacKS 230 pounds or so. Maybe they think if they fix the line, the rb situation will take care of itself.

For some reason no rb at all. Lewis will probably be on IR the whole year or at least pup so I wouldn't count on him needing a roster spot.

I've not been overly impressed with the Pats drafts since Lombardi came aboard. This is a C on the eye test alone. Hoping it proves to be much better.

Reactions: TBR
Read an article saying next year is loaded with RB's.
Yep but they needed an upgrade this year.

With that said as long as the line does its job and players stay healthy they'll be serviceable. Wish it was more than that.

I've seen lots written about Valentine;s conditioning, or lack thereof yet,..
FOOTBALL: Patriots select Valentine in third round
>>>>
While other more well-regarded prospects were still on the board, the Patriots apparently were intrigued by Valentine’s athleticism. His 40-yard dash time of 5.19 seconds is impressive for his size, and he is just the 16th defensive tackle prospect to weigh more than 325 pounds and run a sub-5.2 over the past decade.

Valentine’s explosion and agility scores also ranked high. His 9-2 broad jump is the best of any defensive tackle weighing more than 325 in the past decade, and his shuttle time of 4.59 is the second-best time in the same span, behind only Dontari Poe of the Kansas City Chiefs.<<<<<<<

That sounds like a guy who was in shape.....

draft rating M ......... mystified, but intriguing players. I really wanted a move up in the second for Spriggs, GB got him at 48.......

It takes two to tango and it appears there is a bias against the Patriots that extends to the GM offices too! I bet they tried to move up for Spriggs and couldn't get anyone to deal with them. They make another trade to move up to #147 and have the player they wanted (Matt Judon) selected just before them. Luckily they were able to deal that pick for a 4th next year and save some face.

Drafting players is pretty much a crap shoot, but I did notice a few things that illustrate how great the Pats are at the draft.

The NYJFL stole our first round pick and that ended up leaving the Pats in the position of having no picks until after all the AFCE teams and most of the NYJFL teams had picked at least two players.

BUT THEN... the Pats picked 5 players while the Bills and Jests only picked 1 more and Miami only picked 2. That left the Pats with 5 drafted players, the Bills and Jets 3 and Miami 4.

AND THEN... the Pats took a little breather for a hundred picks or so and then took 4 more picks before the Jests took their last two and before the Dolphins took their last, for a total of 9 players drafted, compared to 8 for the Dolphins and 7 for the Bills and Jests.

AND the Pats replaced the 4th rounder from next year that was stolen by the NYJFL.

Poor coaching but more due to injuries.

But why not try to upgrade the position and get a playmaker in a cost-effective way? That philosophy is right up their alley.

I swear they are allergic to drafting a RB

A rookie running back doesn't make a lot of sense with Garoppolo about to make his NFL debut. Surrounded by veterans like Blount, Bolden, Develin, Lewis and Brown, his work in the backfield will be much easier. If he can get on the same page with Edelman, Amendola, Gronkowski and Bennett, Jimmy G can just do his job and depend on his veterans to keep the chains moving.

The Patriots also know that there will be several high quality backs that get cut as the summer proceeds, so I think we should watch for a free agent or a trade to net one more marquee back with pass catching skills. Donald Brown is a pretty good receiver out of the backfield to complement what Lewis and White bring to the table. My guess is that we see one more prominent veteran running back in camp.

I remember everyone loving the draft that produced such stand out players like Chad Jackson and Laurence Maroney the day after that draft. I remember people hating the draft that got the Pats Ty Warren, Eugene Wilson, Asante Samuel. and Dan Koppen.

In other words, who really cares?

My position is Blount stays and grooms the kid.

Brady is playing week 1.

High quality RBs? Who?

We have invested a lot into the OL in the past 3 drafts.

Bryan Stork
Cameron Fleming
Jon Halapio
Tre Jackson
Shaq Mason
Joe Thuney
Ted Karras
That is a lot of picks dedicated to one unit that still has a lot of unknowns.

C-

Typical Belichick draft.

My grade ......Meh. Un-inspiring even for a BB draft.

+1 And you can add Logan Mankins and Nate Solder to that list, as well. (I saw the messages when those drafts were going on.) The bottom line: the draft gets sorted. And after it does, it no longer resembles the reactions it drew.

All I know is that the NEP acquired the rights to put a few new players on the field who were pretty good at the college level. Again, the rest gets sorted. :D
