So how do YOU grade the Patriots draft?

I guess QB and Valentine in the 3rd and no RB or DE are the ? marks (to put it mildly, some of you might remember i needed a hooker after Valentine)

With stolen 1st that could've transfered into Myles Jack or Jaylon Smith - the only two super exciting guys of this class (+ maybe Elliot due to our RB week spot - but he was never a chance) - this draft would have a different look. Then again they might never return to the former selves on the field so maybe not that much is stolen.

After that we get Cyrus Jones, who on highlights looked to me the best of the backfield guys on Day 2 no matter what his measurables say - yes we will keep our breaths on the deep throws like with butler but the end result might be as good. Throw in return value (saving Edelman in the process) and great WR hands that give some serious interception production + great fighting spirit - and he is our guy. (Sean Davis and TJ Green were gone just before but CJ might have been ranked higher by BB anyway)

Thuney is basically the same story. Also gives intriguing answer to impossible question - how to address 5 positions with 1 pick. I really loved seeing this two guys going for it with IQ and heart.

And then the hick up. Or is it? Instead of QB we could get a decent (but not great or even very good) RB (the only other very good RB Henry was gone before 60 - hence maybe the trade down together with a few good DL gone) or a decent DL, LB, but nothing really special from what was on Day 2 highlights.

We all freaked out seeing Valentines face at 96 but again, watching the highlights I was surprised what might be there (mostly half dead but then in one moment he looked like Pot Roast on coke, jumping like snake all over the OL). They say he's lazy, overwieght etc. - can you imagine how freaked out he must have been seeing the pats tag beside his name! If he dares to show up at the camp he faces a challenge of his life that might just turn him into a man and a player.

The trade down? We could get some good DEs at 61 (Nassib, Bullard, Kaufusi, Jenkins, Calhoun) but based on highlights I would agree not that great not to trade down. Thuney + Mitchell seem like much better value at the moment.

(DE position and pass rush look a bit shaky looking forward - looks like back to pedestrian style - but like some of you mentioned it hints toward transition of D, pushing the middle more)

Trade string to 4th next year was just unbelievable. No RB left there comes even close to the value of this.

And late rounds more intriguing than last year - just seeing some of Kamu actions made me sing 'bye bye freeny' - and even if he doesnt make it as LB he can be a great hybrid asset for the future.

Sorry for your time - just wanted to share that after a rough 3day ride I am at peace.

And even the big Q - no RB - doesnt disturb me anymore. Watching the highlights of 10+ RBs wanted here I saw nothing special. Nothing that would make me feel better about our 2016 RB position. I hope this doesnt come to haunt as again. Still hope some upgrade turns up before the season.

No starters or impact players despite having two 2nd round picks.

Chandler Jones netted us a 3rd string QB and a 4th rd WR (our history with WR's isn't good)

Desperately need a RB and many were available but we passed on them.

No... CJ netted us Thuney(78) and Mitchell(112) ....

I'm in no way stoked about this draft, but at the same time I'm nowhere close to panic mode either. There where a lot of picks, that might turn out to be good players. And only two picks I really didn't like.

The bad(which might turn out to be amazing..I mean, what do I know):
1. QB brisset. Don't see it. At all. But as a guy who is probably seen as a possible back-up, it not worth the frustration.
2. DT Valentine. Don't know much about him, but in draft that where supposed to be DT heavy and with billings, ridgeway and Henry still available, I'm at least a bit puzzeled.
3. No RB. I'm only halfway disapointed. Love Lewis, never been a fan of blount, bolden is meh, maybe gaffney shows up. BB might be ok with what he has and instead wants to dip next year in a RB class that is supposed to be really good. I'm ok with that if that is the thinking behind it.
4. OT. Thuney seems like a guard project, so no real OT drafted. But as with RB maybe this just wasn't the draft class for that in BBs mind. Especially without a 1st. (FU godell)

The good:
1. A lot of depth to an already strong roster.
2. A lot of guys with potential to develope in the system. Guys who seem like guys who would buy in to 'the patriot way'. So guys with good potential who seems to be good fits.
3. 2017 4th rounder.
4. Good UDFAs. Though I had some binkies I would have liked beeing picked up, but that is life.

So when everything is said and done it looks at this point in time to be an average draft class.

However I think it makes the most sense to focus on the entire offseason and not just the draft. In that perspective I'm very pleased with the front office. As usual.

I don't know nearly enough about the players in the draft this year to even attempt to grade it. That said, considering the Pats needed to unload day 3 picks this year, turning two 6ths and a 7th into a 4th next year and a better 7ths this year was superb and should have a significant effect on how the draft is graded.

Although it is difficult for any receiver to master the Pat's system, Mitchell fits very well and has a better chance to succeed than any Pat's rookie WR since Branch.

Kamu Grugier-Hill is crazy athletic, and if he proves coachable and catches on, could become very special.

I give it a C..

I think we'll really like the Jones, Thuney, and Mitchell pickups.

Indifferent about the Valentine pick. I don't hate it, but I don't really love it also. I do like his athleticism.

Didn't care for the QB pick. I also really wanted a bell cow RB this draft. Unless the team has hopes for Gaffney, I'm really not crazy about Blount getting all the reps. I want us to establish something of a run game this year.

Also I was amped to see Bullard fall in range with one of our 2 second round picks, and disappointed we didn't snatch him.

2. DT Valentine. Don't know much about him, but in draft that where supposed to be DT heavy and with billings, ridgeway and Henry still available, I'm at least a bit puzzeled.
I guess they were looking for a specific DT. Valentine is heavier than those three DTs at 329lbs and seems to be somewhat athletic for his size:

"Valentine is a physically imposing prospect at 6'3 5/8 and 329 lbs. His 5.19 second 40 yard dash is incredible impressive for his size, becoming just the 16th defensive tackle prospect to weigh greater than 325 lbs and run a sub-5.2 over the past decade.

Even more impressive are his explosion and agility scores. His 9'2 broad jump is the best of any 325+ lbs defensive tackle in the past decade, and his 4.59 second shuttle is the second best of the era (trailing only Chiefs stalwart Dontari Poe)."
2016 NFL Draft: Why Did the Patriots Draft DT Vincent Valentine?

I give it a solid: :confused:o_O

I dont understand all RB criticism... If the OL is doing a garbage job how can they find holes to run? The OL last year was garbage.. I think due to poor coaching...

Look Darren McFadden stats: 2015 9th SEASON: 10 GS with one of the best OL in the NFL = 1.085 yards 4.6 avg, previous two years united : 19 GS = 913 years 3.4 avg, magic?

If they (OL) play the way they played in 2014 and stay healthy they will be ok... 2017 if loaded with better talent (RB)...

Mike Reiss gives us a B. He liked Cyrus Jones and Mitchell. Questioned whether we should have passed on Devontae Booker.

Poor coaching but more due to injuries.

But why not try to upgrade the position and get a playmaker in a cost-effective way? That philosophy is right up their alley.

I swear they are allergic to drafting a RB

I suspect it's because next year's draft is locked and loaded with RB. Absolutely STACKED.
I agree- it's loaded.

Clearly the team was not excited about this year's crop. They saw Booker the same way they saw a 7th rounder or UFA.

Not only that, I just don't see how another RB fits on this roster:

-Donald Brown
-Blount
-Bolden
-Lewis
-White

You would have to cut someone like Bolden or White to make room for another RB.

Im guessing Brown and White will be battling for a roster spot.

They will, I think, and possibly with DJ Foster depending how they choose to use him.

Lewis
Blount
White/Brown
Bolden

(Practice Squad RB just in case).

That's my guess. As long as Lewis or Blount makes it though the season we'll be OK.

My initial assessment of this draft is that this draft class sucked, and Belichick knew it.

That said, I view Jones as an immediate contributor at slot corner and returner, and Thuney is a long-term piece in this offensive line. If a bad draft class produces two starter-level players, it was a success.

I like Vincent Valentine because he has a name from a Quinten Tarentino movie, therefore he must be a badass.

Brisset is a complicated lottery ticket. If he develops into a competent looking backup and Garoppolo leads the team to 3-4 wins, then this pick essentially equates to a trade for a 2017 2nd rounder. Big if. Further proof that this draft sucked.

Mitchell is a nice looking pick on paper. So were Taylor Price and Josh Boyce. I'm not expecting anything of him, and will be pleasantly surprised if he makes the final 53 given the competition.

The rest of the draft, well, I like the LB/SS hybrid type player and Belichick drafted 2, so that's a plus.
