Now trade Cannon for a high 4th and they can address 2 positions early today.

Good luck with that. would you give up a 4th for him?

He can play tackle in a pinch, and probably better than Marcus Cannon, though he's best suited for guard. It's the kind of versatility Belichick values. My assumption the linemen will be

C: Stork, Andrews
G: Mason, Jackson, Cooper/Kline, Thuney
T: Solder, Vollmer, Waddle/Later Pick

9 seems reasonable. Cooper's also a possible backup at center, which means Andrews' roster spot could be in jeopardy. It's not like any of these guys are superstars.

Good post. Thats exactly how I'm rationalizing the pick. The kid has major positional flexibility and can help mitigate risk.

Cannon is on thin ice. Kline might be as well. We don't know if Cooper can even make the roster. Andrews and Stork are iffy. Waddle played about 15 minutes last year. Shaq and Jackson seem like they have a chance to be good but no one is 100% sure. Solder and Vollmer are fine but FAs in 2017 and 2018 and if Solder sucks next year, he has a 11m cap hit in 2018 that they won't be happy to have.

Lets be honest. The o-line is a major question mark but with Scar back I do feel a helluva lot better about it than I did 90 days ago.

I don't think we'll end up putting Thuney at Center but if we had an OL of Solder, Cooper, Thuney, Mason, Vollmer, that would probably be the most athletic OL in the history of ever.

OT is interesting, though. If we don't draft another OT is Thuney staying there or do they like Cannon and Waddle more than most here.

Can this guy catch? Possible TE conversion?

Deep? Did you see them play last year? It's a mile wide and an inch deep.

You mean when they were rookies and injured? Not to mention that they had coaching issues... but yeah. Let's hold that against them..

One thing we all should've learned by now is that you can't have too many lineman. If BB likes him then what the hell do I know. So don't I.

shaq, tre jackson, kline, thuney, and cooper

5 guards. seems like one will get the axe!!

everybody has cannon cut but the team!

I think he's clearly a guard at the NFL level - athletic enough to get away with playing LT at the college level, but only a guard in the pros (though can play LT in a crisis).

For me, the two Guard spots are between Thuney, Shaq Mason and Jonathan Cooper.
I didn't like Tre Jackson at all coming out of college, which makes me very happy with this pick. Jackson survived on his well-coached technique (Rick Trickett!!!) at the college level, but that's just not good enough in the pros. Way too slow, and he has zero punch. I'm sure he can make a career on teams in the bottom third of the league, but he's nowhere near Patriots standard.

I'd like the team to develop Thuney at both LG and RG. He's clearly athletic enough for LG, but that might end up being Cooper's spot long-term.

We should hold it against them. The offensive line was terrible last year.

  • QB - 3 Brady, Garoppolo, Brisset
  • RB - 4 Bolden, Lewis, Blount/White/Brown, Jonathan Williams
  • FB - 1 Devlin/Dan Vitale
  • C - 1 Stork
  • G - 4 Cooper, Kline, Mason, Jackson
  • OT - 4 Vollmer, Solder, Thuney (Cannon), Kyle Murphy (Waddle)
  • WR - 5 Amendola, Edelman, Hogan (Dobson), Martin/North/Reynolds(Lafell)
  • TE - 3 Rob Gronkowski, Bennett, Williams/Harbor
  • DE - 5 Ninkovich, Sheard, Flowers/Grissom/ Alex McCallister, Long (Jones)
  • DT - 4 Valentine(Siliga), Branch, Malcom Brown, Terrance(Hicks)
  • LB - 5 Collins, Hightower, Shea McClellin(Mayo), Rufus Johnson/Bostic/Feeny/Freeny
  • CB - 5 Ryan, Butler, Cyrus Jones(Bradley Fletcher), Roberts (Tarell Brown), Coleman
  • S - 5 McCourty, Harmon, Chung, Richards, Jalen Mils(Tavon Wilson)
  • ST - 2 Slater, Ebner/King
  • P - 1 Allen
  • K - 1 Gostkowski
  • LS - 1 Cardona

Some things I noticed:

1. Versatile
2. High IQ
3. Fast

Not sure where he fits, other than them maybe not sure with Tre Jackson's leg or Stork's concussion issues? Slightly surprising, even thought I thought OL was a need early.

I trust Scar and BB here.

One note: Apparently, he's mastered the Rubik's Cube. I am not joking. He can solve it quick, repeatedly, which leads me to believe he has an ability to see patterns and react quickly.
Good talk Russ.

I know PFF is taboo around here, but they liked the pick a lot

15 (78) New England Patriots: Joe Thuney | Grade: A
(Pick acquired in trade with New Orleans Saints)

One of our favorite players, Thuney was a top-20 guard in 2014 and our No. 5 graded offensive tackle in 2015. He’s more likely a guard at the next level, but he’s shown that he’s more than capable of playing all over the line, using his strong hands to lock onto blocks in the run game (+24.1 run grade ranked fourth in the class). Thuney adds even more versatility to the Patriots offensive line.

His $3.4m salary next year is not justified. With that said I'm in the minority that believes Scar can get him to play at the same level he did when Vollmer went down in 2013. At present, his play in 2014 and 2015 do not justify the salary.

.

I hear you loud and clear and I agree wholeheartedly but wouldn't they have cut him by now? or is there a reason to keep him tagging along?

Guessing but I think they wanted to see what they hauled in via the draft before potentially cutting him.

On the other hand maybe they want him to re-do his deal and stay as he did well under Scar?

On a football note not sure where they will play the lad. Seems like a safety pick.
Maybe he can get Kraft's ring back from Putin
