Draft Day 2: Official Rounds 2-3 Thread

What I have read is that if he stayed in school another year then very likely he would have moved to at least a 2nd round talent.

Just thought of an advantage to picking Valentine in the 3rd. Only way we could have got a 3rd round pick to the practice squad without him being claimed by another team :)
Unfortunately, this may be the reason he was picked

We see the ancillary impact of the commissioners penalty. The Pats lost more than a first rounder this year and a fourth rounder next: the Pats lost a first rounder, a third (do they take a qb if Brady's not suspended?) as well as a spot on the 53 that would otherwise go to a different depth player. That's a huge hit to take and it's manifesting itself in a bunch of different ways. Makes me hate Goodall even more every time I see him hugging some former player.

I understand your perspective. Here is another. Brady has been extended. Ergo, JimmyG is probably not going to stay the backup. This implies that he may be dealt, after increasing his value via gaining some (more) pro-game experience (e.g. 4 games, if TB's new lawyer does not turn things around). If that is the case, the NEP also have quite the bargaining chip in moving JimmyG...which could happen during the season, or afterwards. Regardless, if Brissett shows promise and grows as an adult/player, the NEP have gained what they can get back by moving JimmyG.

Odd picks. The Patriots tend to leave us scratching our heads on draft day, and quite often the same heads are scratched a couple years later on those picks.

On Valentine - projected as a free agent. Reports say he was a nose tackle - have not ready anything on versatility. After losing Hicks, Easley, and Jones and adding Knighton to Branch and Brown, the Pats seem thin at disruptive pass-rushing tackle and deep at big one-techniques. They added another big one-technique, and a one-technique whose reports say he has "soft weight" and is pushed around.

Valentine is a more refined player than a project. Providing he has a good camp he'll be part of the d-line rotation Week 1 playing 20 or so snaps a game.

You know more about him than I do, for sure. I only saw a few minutes of film. He holds his position off the snap. He gets good arm extension. That's all the good I see.

He's fat, doesn't pursue, doesn't need to be double teamed, doesn't keep the legs moving, fires out high, doesn't get to the ball off the point of attack, can't shed his blocker well and has limited technique once engaged. That's the bad I see.

Much of that could be that I saw garbage internet film, or he was hurt, or he just played to his assignment. Obviously, the Pats see a lot I don't see and know a lot I don't know. I don't really get the pick and I don't see this guy getting snaps at his current level. I'd love to be wrong.

All I do is watch a little film and read what scouts say. Don't assume I know more than you. Just trying to be informed and come to my own conclusions. :D

Watch the USC game from 2014. He doesn't look good there either.

My Take: Pats rolled the dice on this kid. You can't teach size and he does have talent and the physical tools to be a pretty good player in the middle of the line. Every year hes had some kind of injury and had a high ankle sprain last year.

I think he needs to lose about 10lbs but with better conditioning and technique he has a chance to be a decent rotational player here. It was a questionable pick but not awful.....yet.

I now realize why so many UDFAs succeed with the pats

I am so excited.....we still have 8 more picks to go......we're going to be the ones in the dumpster fishing around for gold at the end of the show

They'll probably pick some shrimp QB from some MAC-type conference school with the 232nd pick in the 7th round and try to make him play another position. Losers. ;)

What problems has BB not addressed?
Seriously, you're whining as if you're clairvoyant and can see the future and know that all the moves aren't going to pan out.

BTW, since you joined late, the Pats won 3 SBs without a " big play fast WR".
I don't get the need for you to attack my length of rooting for the pats.

I have been a fan for a long time and just because I haven't posted on a message board as long as you shouldn't mean anything.

Didn't meant to sound like whining but I thought some draft picks last night esp the QB will not help the pats this year.

I am not clairvoyant but I am pretty sure the QB drafted will not help the Pats win the 2016 super bowl.

Also, the pats won four Super Bowls without a big, fast WR. As you were referring to the first three titles, those teams were just well put together with great defensive playmakers and solid offensive playmakers.

how did they move them further away? Might not have moved them closer, but they hardly detract from the team.
That was why I mentioned opportunity cost. They pretty much could have picked any other position at that point in the draft instead of QB and that player could have helped the team.
I could be wrong. I mean it could be possible for this new QB to be so good he beats out Jimmy and Tom for the starting job, then I would be wrong on my first assessment.

That's not fair. There are only two seasons where I feel that Belichick the GM really let the team down. That would be in 06 and 13, and at least in 13 he was expecting Hernandez to still be on the team. In 07, 11 we should have won the Super Bowls we were in with the talent we had on the field but the plays were not made. 08, 12, 15 we got screwed by awful injuries. 10 we were in a rebuild mode. And in 09 we just sucked and a savvy draft pick or two wouldn't have saved anything.
Your post sums up my actual thoughts much more specifically.

Still don't like drafting a QB in the third round.

I hope this works. Video of ESPN's coverage of the Valentine pick.

Patriots have returned to form. Drafting players 2 or 3 or 4 rounds higher than where they should go. I though belichick was into game theory? If there's a high chance someone like valentine will be there in the 6th, you wait. Then you get a third round value player plus valentine.

Very frustrating. Shon coleman or leraven clark would have been great developmental tackles. Instead they get yet another guard with short arm who can't move anyone.

Cyrus jones is a good pick. For a fourth or fifth rounder, which is where he was projected.

Not for nothing but I guess I don't see why you would expect every single draft pick to be directed towards that goal. They're building a program to sustain the roster multiple years out. The team is mostly set - if any team were depending on late 3rd rounders to immediately help them win the Super Bowl this year then I would just think they probably weren't SB caliber in the first place. Just out of curiousity I see the Broncos drafted TE Jeff Heureman in the 3rd last year, a position of need for them after losing Julius Thomas. He tore his ACL and never played. They still won the Super Bowl.

Personally I would've liked to see a RB taken because I don't think what they have is good nearly good enough, but as it stands there's still several good ones left and the draft isn't over. I think it's kind of impossible to grade/judge drafts immediately anyway, but even moreso when doing it on the fly when there's not a full draft class yet.
