Patriots Add Offensive Tackle Joe Thuney With 78th Overall Pick

Ian Logue

The Patriots added some help to their offensive line with the addition of 3rd-round pick Joe Thuney on Friday night.

Some things I noticed:

1. Versatile
2. High IQ
3. Fast

Not sure where he fits, other than them maybe not sure with Tre Jackson's leg or Stork's concussion issues? Slightly surprising, even though I thought OL was a need early.

I trust Scar and BB here.

One note: Apparently, he's mastered the Rubik's Cube. I am not joking. He can solve it quick, repeatedly, which leads me to believe he has an ability to see patterns and react quickly.

Why?????

This guy is not a master of the zone blocking scheme. The pats have to start from scratch teaching him.

Not sure he has the feet to work in the zone blocking scheme.

By draft rankings, we reached by about 100 slots. But at this point, we just have to trust the scouting. If this pick was Scar's recommendation, I'd go with his opinion over a general scouting service.

The slow feet and short arms are concerning. I know it's ultimately up to Scar/Bill where he plays (I would hope they were targeting the tackle position with the pick), but the fact he specifically mentioned he was most comfortable playing on the interior as opposed to the outside shows a little lack of confidence.

I'm not upset with the position drafted, OL was a big need. But obviously, the Pats continue to go against the grain when drafting for 'value' and rankings. They value certain players earlier than the rest of the NFL.

I don't pretend to know about college football so I have no idea who he is and I'll neither praise the pick nor bash it, but how do you know that they value them earlier than the rest of the NFL? Draft rankings by so-called analysts aren't the NFL.

PFF graded him as the 2nd best pass blocking OL and best run blocking OL available. And check out where I ringed. Zero pressures on 2.5 second passes. Seems kind of important in this offense :)Screen Shot 2016-04-30 at 05.55.48.png

He's the same size as Light was when we drafted him. I know, you can't fix short arms, but I assume he'll be playing Tackle. If so I like the pick. If not I don't. An athletic backup Tackle who could replace Vollmer in a year ? That would work for me.

Not thrilled if he moves inside although if he fixed the problem in there that would work, I am just hoping the kids from last year and Cooper can do that.

Bob McGinn's preview, which is based on rankings and interviews with NFL scouts, had him as the 7th best guard and a 3rd or 4th rounder.

7. JOE THUNEY, North Carolina State (6-4 ½, 305, 5.00, 3-4):Performed well at the East-West Game and the combine. "He's becoming a teacher's pet because he worked out awesome and is on the rise," said one scout. "He played left tackle this year, which he is not. He's either an athletic guard or a center. He's been underweight his whole career and has played all over the line out of need. He needs to work on play strength but he's a really good bender, really nifty athlete. He was under the radar at the start of the year." His 33 starts included 23 at LT, eight at LG, one at RT and one at RG. Short arms (32 ¼). "He has a lot of what (Nick) Martin has in terms of know-how and toughness," a third scout said. Highest Wonderlic (39) of the O-linemen. From Centerville, Ohio.

Googs must have hated him.

Its the Constanza Principal....do the opposite.:p

If Thuney is a Guard . . . you have to figure that Thuney, Mason and Cooper will make it. Plus Andrews and Stork. That's 5. Not a lot of room for more inside guys, perhaps one out of Kline and Jackson.

While using a #3 on a Guard would be disappointing given the youth there already, it would be good in the sense that maybe we'd get that problem solved as we have to get it solved.

39 Wonderlic. Graduate student in International Studies.

Can help with foreign policy? :p

On a football note not sure where they will play the lad. Seems like a safety pick.

Zone blocking is easy.

Probably the youngest, deepest position on the team with Jackson, Mason, Cooper. Odd.

He can play tackle in a pinch, and probably better than Marcus Cannon, though he's best suited for guard. It's the kind of versatility Belichick values. My assumption the linemen will be

C: Stork, Andrews
G: Mason, Jackson, Cooper/Kline, Thuney
T: Solder, Vollmer, Waddle/Later Pick

9 seems reasonable. Cooper's also a possible backup at center, which means Andrews' roster spot could be in jeopardy. It's not like any of these guys are superstars.

Scar worked him out. Are you really going to sit there and pretend you know more about choosing OL than Scarnecchia?

Deep? Did you see them play last year? It's a mile wide and an inch deep.

I was surprised as well but this could allow them to, part ways with Cannon, which would save money and hopefully improve the unit.
