Top 5 talent who will miss the 2016 season. He is expected to be back in 2017 healthy.

This is just the type of guy I can see Belichick drafting to bank a stud for 2017.

The question is how far will he fall.
We have 2 picks late in the 2nd round.

I would guess he would be drafted between the mid 2nd round & 4th round.

I would much rather bank this kid for 2017, than reach for another safety in the 2nd round (Wilson, Harmon, & Richards).

A guy like him will probably fall to the bottom 3rd or high 4th.

That would not be the case every year but there are a lot of players in the 60-100 range that while perhaps not stars can be solid contributors this year.

Has this ever worked? Any names of "studs" who were hurt beyond an ACL who returned to their previous injury level ? No thanks for me.

I feel like Belichick won't be able to help himself - high likelihood he's drafted in the third round by the Pats, lol

Put me in the not interested camp. There are so many recent examples of this not working out. See Marcus Lattimore. Ekpre-Olomu etc. We ourselves have stashed players such as Jake Ballard on the roster and they couldn't return. The other point is that if no one has picked him before 61 you know that there must be something seriously wrong.

We can draft a player at 60/61 that can help this team next year.

My problem is with the player, not with the injury. He's so small. Where would he play for us? Weakside linebacker in 43 sets? Safety? Situational pass rusher? He can't stack and shed at all. Yes, he's a gifted pass rusher and cover man, and there's a place for that type of skillset in the NFL, but I'm just struggling to determine who he would replace on the roster. I don't think he would be a full time LB, but instead a highly situational (and potentially valuable) player. To me, that means that the grade should be mid-rounds, anyway. Add in a devastating injury, and I wouldn't take him before the comp picks at the back end of the draft. Too much risk.

I'd take a flyer on him in 6 or 7, but players who miss their rookie seasons tend to never be productive

Duron Harmon went in the 3rd round, and he has subsequently been proven to be not a reach at all.

What do you think of Tavon Wilson?
I guess the jury is still out on Richards.

I guess I am just frustrated at DB's & DL's in every draft.

Speaking of Busts in the 2nd round. Ron Brace is as bad as it gets.

I know we can't get a Gronkowski or Collins every year, but I would love to see a running back or receiver early.

Wasn't a fan of the Tavon Wilson pick, but he didn't spend a lot of time looking for a job this offseason as Detroit signed him early.

Hated the Brace pick. He was the single slowest player in the draft that year.

I suspect if there weren't doubts about Wilfork's contract Brace wouldn't have been the pick.

That is a really good point.

I remember seeing Brace play for the first time. He was at nose tackle in preseason & he got pushed back 5 yards & then fell flat on his back. It should have been on football follies.

I believe that Brace was the slowest player in the whole combine.

He weighed in at the combine at 220lbs, but his playing weight was around 235, which seems to be fine for LBs in today's game.

He could play WLB or even MLB. Personally think (if healthy) him alongside Collins and Hightower would wreak havoc.

I find it really unfortunate that him and Myles Jack might have some serious red flags about their injuries. Prob my fav 2 prospects in this whole draft, and maybe the 2 best if healthy.

Actually, it sounds like we can start asking the same question about Myles Jack!

How far do you think he'll fall if these reports about his knee being a time bomb are true?

Me personally, if he somehow makes it to the second rd, I draft the kid! Hell fit right in nicely with Collins and Hightower, and well have 3 LBs that never would leave the field.

I am working on my LB's big board article as we speak and you will not find Jaylon Smith's name on that list.

I can't remember who it was, but one big media pundit predicted today that the Pats would take Jaylon Smith at 96. A way of getting their first round pick back was what they said.

I'm extremely skeptical.

Me too. I'd be more inclined to believe it if they'd brought him in for a visit so that they could get a medical.

Probably Peter King:
Smith: New England at 96. He’s the first-round pick they didn’t have this year, assuming the Notre Dame linebacker ever comes back from the nerve damage in his knee stemming from his Fiesta Bowl injury. The Pats can justify it because of their multiple selections in this area—60, 61, 91 and 96.

I'm skeptical. There aren't enough snaps to go around for all three of Hightower, Collins, and Smith, but they'll have to make decisions on Hightower and Collins before they know the extent of Smith's 2017 contributions. It'd be a disaster if they let Collins walk because of Smith but then Smith never returns to full health.

Thanks, I knew it was someone fairly influential. I wouldn't touch Smith until the 2nd half of day three, if at all. There are still good prospects potsntially available at the end of day 3 and I wouldn't want to sacrifice them for someone who might never play.
