How about Ricky Stanzi? Was already on the team for some time last year, probably knows the system and won't cost much for the 4 games! If I remember correctly they already worked him out during the offseason.
Maybe an UDFA, but I don't see any real benefit in drafting a rookie this year.

Potential benefit of drafting (the right) rookie this year:
- Garappolo plays extremely well during Brady suspension
- Rookie does well in camp and fully learns offense during the season
- Pats are able to trade Garoppolo for 2017 first round pick after the season and feel reasonbly good that Brady's new backup will be competent.

I wouldn't take a QB just for the sake of it, though. They need to feel pretty decent about the guy.

Playing devil's advocate here but do you really wanna trade Garappolo if he shows that he is a competent Brady replacement ? Brady is not getting younger and would most probably be done if he suffers any mid-level, serious injury.

Good question and good argument. The counter to that is Garappolo is signed through 2017, while Brady is signed through 2019. Per Miguel's page, the dead cap hit for trading Brady after 2016 is 27m. Trading after 2017 would be 14m. After 2018 is 7m.

To me, it seems like trading after 2016 is prohibitive. Trading after 2017 is certainly possible.

I guess the question is exactly how good Garappolo looks and how much Brady declines next year....

I would ask myself why a bunch of teams that have interviewed him and worked him out have passed on him more than once and then say no.

I'm personally hoping for Jake Rudock from Michigan. Kevin Hogan and the Stanford pipeline seems most likely to me, with which I'd be ok.

I'm in the keep Jimmie camp if he plays well. Good QBs don't grow on trees. You just need to look within our own division to see how hard it can be to find even a decent QB. So if he plays well and shows potential to be a good or very good starter, then I don't see how you can trade him when your starting QB will be 39 when the season starts. 40 for QBs seems to be what 30 is for running backs. Decline can happen quickly, just from one bad hit.
