Troy Brown: Brady's Original Go to Guy

You think about the defense and the quarterback, but Troy Brown won that Pitt playoff in 2001-2 on special teams [assist to Brandon Mitchell and Harris on the block]

his punt return against Pittsburg in the afc championship game. the steelers did not want to punt to him that day, but their field position and which hash mark they were on forced them to. His shake and back return for about 55 yards for a TD was a game breaker.

The Troy Brown game that sticks out for me was late in the season in 1999; Pete Carroll's final year as head coach of the Pats.

It was a tough season that started off promising at 6-2 but eventually unraveled to 8-8 down the stretch. The patriots were getting absolutly embarrassed by the Eagles in week 15. There were a few tough losses that season, but this one felt like they were hitting rock bottom. Every Patriot player out there looked completely dejected and lifeless. Every player, that is, not named Troy Brown. He led the team that day in catches and 105 yards. More than his stats though, Troy was THE ONLY patriot out there who was still fighting on every single play, and who would not show any signs of defeat. His patriot hall of fame character, dependability, and legendary competitiveness was on full display that day... in a blowout 24-9 loss.

Up until this point, Troy was seen as a 3rd or even 4th option, (behind Coates, Terry Glenn, and either Jefferson or Brisby) but it was clear after this game that he was the number one. It's no accident that after this season, when Belichick replaced Carroll, Troy came into his own.

I truly and honestly remember seeing Troy Brown's very first pre season game (against Green Bay, I believe) and Troy was on fire in the 4th quarter. I became a huge fan of his from that very moment.
He also made a most important regular season catch in the Meadowlands to get the team into the playoffs in 1996 against the Giants that was really cool.

Oh heck, I think my favorite play of his is EVERY PLAY. Dude gave 300% on and off the field. Just a pros pro.

Was it Troy Brown or David Patten that ran, passed, and caught a TD in one game against the Colts?

My favorite Troy Brown play was mentioned a couple of times here and was at the 3:20 mark of the last video of the OP's 1st post. The 8o yard bomb to win in OT at Miami in 2003.

If my memory serves me, the Dolphins got a gift pass completion earlier in the OT on a completed pass that was clearly out of bounds but Olindo Mare missed a chip shot 35 yard FG that would have won it a few plays later.

After the game the Miami defender whom Troy got behind responded to a question by stating that he had watched hours and hours of Troy Brown tape but never saw him that far down the field. Woops.

I also have a favorite punt return but it isn't the one from the 2001 Steelers AFCC game. It was against the Eagles and I'm not sure if it was the SB in 2004 or not. It might have been called back due to a penalty but it was the sweetest non-TD punt return I've ever seen. That was also in the last video of the OP's post at the 2:30 mark. It was amazing.

Thanks for posting this. Still get chills watching that drive-still the greatest drive in team history.

The best thing about that drive (well, aside from NE winning :) :) ) is that neither team had any timeouts left. So there were no interruptions and it just flowed. It was great football to watch.

Definitely a beautiful drive... I know that this is a Troy Brown appreciation thread and all, but I forgot about the contributions of JR Redmond on that drive. That one where he gets the first down and stops the clock by getting to the sideline was so clutch!

Troy Brown is the epitome of "Do your job". I especially admire him for being a 8th round pick, being on the practice squad, getting cut, etc. and making his way up from the 5th receiver to the go-to guy. Nobody worked harder than Troy and I can appreciate that. Great role model for kids too.

Also, he looks a lot like Chris Tucker.

Check out the TD throw from Patten at 1.36. Looks like the same play as Edelman to Amendola against the Ravens.

Yep it was the same play. Belichick talked about it in his "Do Your Job" documentary.

Thanks for that.

Funny side note: My 9 year old loved that play so it was fun to show him the Patten/Brown version.

Yep; it happened in the 3rd quarter, and was called back because of a holding penalty to that over-drafted (shocker!), useless stiff Dexter Reid. That bonehead move cost us at least 3 points.

As others have mentioned, the greatest Troy Brown catch for me was vs Carolina in the SB. Excellent throw, even more excellent catch. Utterly, totally Clutch. And don't forget that the catch followed another Troy Brown catch which was called back because of a ridiculous, ticky-tack OPI penalty on Troy.

Runner-up is the catch - on his back - at the Joisy Swamp vs the vaGiants on the last day of 1996, which continued a 4th-quarter drive that led to the game-winning points that put the Pats in the POs. I forget,
was that a 3rd-down catch?
