While I think it's total BS that Brady got suspended. If Jimmy G didn't play a significant
game in his first four years, his trade value would be minimal. Now, he'll get 4 games
with; Gronk, Edelman, Bennett, Lewis, etc. I feel he showed significant improvement
last pre-season. He is going to play well and increase his trade value.

If Cassel wasn't worth a first rounder after going 11-5 in 2008, Jimmy isn't going to fetch one for 4 games, even if he goes 4-0.

sure he would......whoever gets him gets him with a bargain salary for one more year

Cassel made a 16-0 go 11-5.......the drop off was huge

That's if you assume two things: One, that that 2008 team would have gone 16-0 with Brady (which is beyond unlikely), and that losing Brady so early had no impact on the team morale. The fact that they were able to stay focused (and keep Moss happy) was a testament to Bill Belichick as a coach of course, but also to Cassel for earning enough respect to be the leader.

The only way Garrapolo would be worth a first rounder is if he absolutely lit up the first 4 games, something like 12 TDs and 1 pick with a 4-0 record, in which case I'm not sure I'd want to deal him anyway.

starting QB's are a hotter commodity these days......

Cassel didn't fetch a 1st rounder because:

1) Pats franchised him and were literally right up against the cap; needed to move him ASAP or risk losing players in free agency, and only had a limited pool of trading partners that could afford a franchise QB hit even for a short period of time.

2) he was a 7th round pick who was considered a reach because he didn't start in college; he also had never even showed particularly well in the preseason before Brady's injury. Many people were skeptical that he was just a Belichick creation.

Contrast that with Garappolo:

- still on rookie contract, Patriots have no need to move him, and that in itself is a huge selling point for a potential team.

- he was a legitimate 2nd round pick who has shown potential when he played in he preseason.

Obviously it's all in Garappolo's hands now. If he looks no worse than Brock Ossweiler did, he would fetch us a first rounder easily. If he doesn't look good, then his value decreases dramatically.

OTOH, Cassel played well enough to go 13-3. The only games the Pats had little hope were PIT and SD, plus it was the D that got flummoxed by the Wildcat.

using this logic, going 16-0 with Brady would not be such a stretch

Notice how Bill didn't call the Dolphins cheaters and whined the rules needed to be changed...

I'm not sure what he'd be worth. Assuming he plays well, the negatives are that he'd have just one year left and although he'd have a 4 game resume it would still only be 4 games. I couldn't even begin to guess, other than we almost certainly could get a higher second round pick back than we used on him. Maybe more, I have no idea.

Maybe. The Pats would probably then have use a high level pick (like they did for Jimmy) to replace the QB#2/QB-future position. And on a pick that may or may not be as good as Jimmy. So it could be a wash.

In this situation, no team is giving a 1st rounder for a guy with 1 year left on his rookie deal.

Only game we lose with Brady that year is the wildcat game.

One year left on rookie deal, plus a chance to franchise him for 2 years, and all the time in the world to work out a long term deal. Potentially the franchise route is pricier than other QBs of his ability, but the team would view a trade as the opportunity to have him for 3 years minimum.

Nobody is going to give up a first rounder for a QB that they have to franchise within 1 year.

Why don't we just send Garoppolo to Canton while we are at it?

Yeah, he just figured out how to skin it.

Seattle traded a 1st rounder for Percy Harvin who was in the last year of his rookie contract. He immediately signed an extension as part of the trade. It's certainly possible that any team trading for Jimmy G would acquire him conditioned on agreeing to an extension. The Patriots have the luxury of time for such negotiations that they didn't have in the Cassel case.

Again, this is all moot if Garappolo shows nothing in those 4 games. But QBs who show *anything* are always a hot commodity.

What Did Brady sigin a extension until he's 50? No way we Trade Grop for a First Rounder if he's the real deal. How long did it take us to get a QB like Brady again??? Nuff Said!

Garoppolo is a stud. Patriots go 4-0.

Belichick calls Danny Ainge.

Ainge fleeces Chip Kelly. Sends Brady to the 49ers for their 2017, 2018, and 2019 #1 picks. Brady gets to live in the Bay Area. The Pats load up.
