If we would of kept Ty Law around for 06/07

Asante was paid the tag $ for a CB in 07 so the likelihood of paying both of those guys big money was unlikely.

He would have been an upgrade over Hobbs but he also was an excellent return guy.

Do you think the outcome for those seasons would been different?

I think so because in the '06 ACC title game we only lost by a few points maybe if ty law was on our D he could of prevented at least one of the colts touchdowns or maybe even get a pick, same with SB42 we only lost by a few points maybe if Ty Law was on that D maybe the giants score one less TD or gets a valuable pick. Didn't mention '05 because I don't think it would of made much of a difference on the outcome of the season
The problem with this question is you erroneously presume we could have kept Law, and left everything else exactly the way it was.

Law's 2005 cap hit was going to be $12.5 million - and this is back when $12.5 million was considered a lot of money. So whom do you suggest we get rid of in order to keep Law? Light? Vrabel? Seymour? Wilfork? Bruschi? Colvin? Brady?

Unless you cut Brady himself, you would have had to have gotten rid of 3 stellar players in order to keep Law.

How would his family have eaten?

I think 06 had more to do with Branch. 07 Law would have certainly helped

Yup: either learn to write accurately or don't start threads -- thread titles with elementary mistakes in them are an embarrassment.

Too harsh. Correct the guy and move on. Otherwise you come across as an uppity ass which I'm sure you're not.

What players are you subtracting due to the massive paycheck law would have gotten?

If we honestly tried to figure it out we probably could come up with something.

For starters as an example Maybe just let Corey Dillon walk. At the time it was a no brainer to re-up him his 04 season was masterful. But with hindsight if we let him walk and drafted someone that year we could free up cap space while simultaneously draft a RB to fill the whole a year before we did and double bonus no Maroney.

I'm sure we could find one or two other moves given hindsight that wouldn't have hurt much. But alas there was no way to know.

For the record CDs 04 season was possibly the most fun thing I've seen on a football field just fun violent running so no way did I not want him back for more at the time.

I'm all ears.

Well, let's see what our good friend, Miguel, has to say about this from a numbers perspective....

Dillon's 2005 cap number was $2.2 million, with $3.5 million dead money remaining, $1.1 of which would have hit in 2005 and $2.4 of which would have hit in 2006 (assuming they cut him after 6/1/05). hmmmmmm...... not sure letting Dillon walk would have freed up the cap space to keep Law.

The moves that "wouldn't have hurt much" also would not generate the necessary cap savings.

Keeping Law would have required letting multiple big name players go.

What if the Pats kept Revis last year?

The thing i hate about what ifs is that it can always be countered by another what if.

What if the Pats kept Revis last year?

Ehhh who knows. Looked like the smart move to let him go. Clearly lost a step though. Even though he was still very good. His 2014 was clearly better than his 2015

Law did win 3 SBs, can't blame him for wanting to cash in while the iron was still hot.

It would have been great if Law had remained with the Patriots and we might have won another
Superbowl. The trouble is that both Law and Milloy had been signed to outrageously high contracts
by the previous administration. BB had no choice but to let them both go.

Keeping Deion Branch and maybe David Givens in '06 would have been a better question. Because in 2004 Law played 7 games and then got put on IR and the Pats went onto win the SB with Samuel and Gay. So the team already proved they could win without Law and Law was going to be a $12.5m cap hit in a year the cap was going to be $85m and he wasn't taking a paycut and had just turned 31 years old.

In '06 if Branch and Givens were still with the team they probably win 2 more games in the regular season and go 14-2 and have homefield

Would of, could of, should of ...
I was just going to mention this. I know I sound like a petty old lady, but this grammar mistake is made all over the place today. It's "would have" not would of. If we would have kept Ty Law around, maybe we would have won. English major rant over.

Keeping Givens would have proven to be a mistake. He did nothing after leaving for big $. Branch also was severely overpaid.

Well, in all fairness David Givens suffered a fierce ACL tear in 06 at TENN that required multiple surgeries which put him on IR for that year as well as 2007. Then he was waived, iirc. Plus, even if healthy, Givens would've been catching passes from Kerry Collins, as opposed to Brady. It's not that he wasn't capable of producing as wideout; just a bad situation in Tenn and bad luck on top of that with the injury...

Granted I'm not arguing that NE should've tossed all that money at Givens. I have no clue how that would've impacted NE's cap in 06 and 07; I'd certainly rather have the room to acquire Moss and Welker. I just don't want to totally dismiss Givens, he was a solid player.

EDIT: Oh dear God, I just looked at the Titans roster just to make sure that it was indeed Kerry Collins at QB. Collins was there but I totally forgot that 06 was Vince Young's rookie year. Ugggghhh.

That's a fine point, although Givens was probably never going to stay once he hit FA. I believe his deal was 5/25, which was fairly significant at the time for a WR of his caliber.

Another example of teams overpaying for Patriot players. As a matter of fact, both CLE and TEN were prying him away from the get go, and there were conflicting reports as to who he signed with.
