Josh Norman is now a free agent - Panthers removed franchise tag

Carolina really screwed him, at the beginning of FA he could have made a killing, but now, this was basically a FU move by Carolina to Nirman and his agent.

So Carolina thought that he wasn't worth 14 mil on a SB team, no way BB signs him.

A major reason why I can't see it happening

New guy walks into the locker room making a ton more than the following major pieces to a SuperBowl (who've been patiently waiting for their own contract)

I can't believe that the Panthers couldn't get at least a fourth rounder to trade his rights. But I don't think Norman is worth the money .

norman's a dink

no thanks. anytime this idiot is on television, i change the channel instantly. his whole act is ****ty.

**** him

He never signed his franchise tender so they couldn't trade him because technically he doesn't have a contract. I guess they could have tried a sign and then trade

Yup, the idea of signing this guy is kind of absurd IMO...

We have HOME GROWN talent on this roster that are awaiting their much deserved payday and can be the cornerstones of this team for the next 5+ years... why would they jump all over a zone CB that has really only had 1-2 solid years and is 29 years old at a position that starts to see a falloff in their 30s typically?

The guys on this team with rookie deals still are the ones that deserve a big payday.. we already have a younger CB that hasn't even reached his ceiling yet and helped us win a SB by making one of the most memorable defensive plays in the history of the game.

He's not coming here for a discount, or some "prove it" deal, or to "increase his market value"... hes at the highest market value that hes ever been at or ever will be in this league..

I respect Norman's game and everything, and heck if this was major league baseball we could have signed Revis last year, Norman this year and extended Butler too.. but its not major league baseball, we have a strict salary cap and so you only have so many mega-deals to go around to the team captain types that are the foundation of your team... to give a guy like Norman one of those types of deals when we have 3 other guys that have put blood, sweat and tears in for this team and helped them win a Championship would be a giant slap in the face to all 3 of them and would create resentment and animosity.

Pretty cool that a player like that becomes available in April, but its a pipe dream for the Patriots and would make ZERO sense when you have a younger CB in Butler that is almost as good, or arguably as good, who's younger and still has a higher ceiling still playing on a rookie deal.

If we didn't have butler, then sure. But I would rather pay butler next year because

1. Butler won't be looking for 17 mill a year.
2. I think Butler is just as good as Norman AND younger.

On the contrary we could still pay both butler and Norman probably but then we would lose Hightower and Collins, which I would not be willing to do.... Although we could snag jaylon smith in the 2nd round and redshirt him haha.
How do we know that?

I'm fine with Butler, Ryan, and seeing who sticks out of the remaining group.

How do we know that?

I'd be comfortable paying Butler a top market deal because you know what you have with him, he plays hard every single play and gives it his all, is a great guy in the locker room, a great guy in the community and hes humble...

That is a guy you can feel comfortable giving a big contract, to be a leader on this team

I like this move by Carolina, basically this will blow up any future Franchise tagged player that does not sign his deal. He can only get the money he wants now if he signs for a ****e team, and will make him stand out now as a dud because those around him aren't what he has been playing with, which culminates in him getting cut in 2 years as seems the case with the majority of Free agent big money CB deals.

Will the Panthers get back a 2nd in a compensation.

Win Win for the Panthers and all the Owners.

As with Von Miller.. 20m on a non QB is insane.

Excellent point. The Patriots would never sign Revis, for example.

Oh, wait....
The timing does not bode well for the Patriots. If we had Collins, High and Butler already wrapped for a couple more years, then I will say time to start trimming the fat from the roster and making a play for him. But going for him will be too expensive and can have unintended consequences on our own players who need to be paid!!! Revis fell to us at just the right moment.

never happen......... now watch it happen.........

Yep, bleep him.

Interesting how a good but not excellent talent and general bad actor got a kick to the crotch.

If you are talking about a compensation pick, 3rd round is the highest that gets awarded.

Imagine Norman sign with the Giants.. the awkwardness with Odell Beckham Jr. At least practice will never get dull again.
I'd like him to wind up in the NFC East but not in NY. Twice a year he and ODB tangling. Could be very entertaining

The timing sucks and I don't expect to see the guy playing for the Patriots this season, but we should all have learned better than to call anything of this sort impossible. Just for example, Amendola and Canon = $7.5m, and Kline + Freeny = $3m (Both sets of numbers are approximate), getting to about $10.5m right there.
