2016 Patriots' Pre-Draft Contacts.

Here's a Hedelin highlight. Pretty impressive. Really like how he finishes blocks and finds the defender in space. Impressive.

He will be our surprise safety selection rated as a 5th round pick, but selected in the 2nd round. And trust me, he better ONLY play safety. Despite excellent size, speed, athletic ability, etc, he has documented troubles as a cover CB.

Excellent tackler, perfect cover SAFETY. Also has shown excellent ability on special teams as a tackler (don't think as a return man).

Sounds a bit like Patrick Chung according to NFL.com's write up. A hard hitting SS who struggles in coverage.
2016 NFL Draft Profile: Sean Davis
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Big, broad frame with absolutely shredded physique. Showed mental toughness. Bounced back from awful Bowling Green game to make numerous plays against South Florida the next week. Has size to battle against move tight ends. Leaps and challenges aggressively on 50/50 throws. Grabbed three interceptions in 2015. Around the ball and in the mix. Posted 298 tackles over three years as a starter. Comes firing downhill with purpose when it is time to get help against the run. Looks to lay the wood to receivers and make them feel it. Second in the nation with five forced fumbles. Has played safety and cornerback.
WEAKNESSES
At times, was disastrous in man coverage. Dinged for 614 yards receiving against him. Slow, upright backpedal and clunky when turning to run. Seemed to be too big and lacking in foot quickness needed to play cornerback. Flagged for four pass interferences, a late hit and a personal foul this year. Charged with ten touchdowns allowed over last two seasons. Missed tackle numbers are troubling with 40 over last three years. Allows too much separation and can’t click and close on throws.

He was bad because they had him playing Outside CB and not Safety.

NFL.com's scout report

BOTTOM LINE
Miscast this season as an outside cornerback, Davis battled through adversity and bounced back with ball production, tackles and forced fumbles. Davis has the ability to cover, but his strengths would best be utilized at safety where he has fewer man responsibilities and can be deployed near the line of scrimmage a little more often. Davis is an eventual starter at safety and a big backup at cornerback.

I think you draft Davis as a CB that can play safety. If he develops as a CB then great, if he doesn't, then we still have Ryan and Roberts and then he's there as a Harmon replacement if he leaves after next year.

I'd love to get Davis and see what he can be made into. I've never seen him play so I can't comment on that. But athletically he's the good of Logan Ryan (short area quickness) without the bad (bigger, better straight line speed, more explosive).

He's kind of a less explosive Byron Jones :

Jones: (mishmash of combine and pro day)
Height:6005
Weight:199
40 Yrd Dash:4.43
20 Yrd Dash:2.52
10 Yrd Dash:1.50
225 Lb. Bench Reps:18
Vertical Jump:44 1/2
Broad Jump:12'03"
20 Yrd Shuttle:3.94
3-Cone Drill:6.78

Davis : combine
Height:6010
Weight:201
40 Yrd Dash:4.46
20 Yrd Dash:2.60
10 Yrd Dash:1.56
225 Lb. Bench Reps:21
Vertical Jump:37 1/2
Broad Jump:10'06"
20 Yrd Shuttle:3.97
3-Cone Drill:6.64

David can't jump through the roof like Jones (although the jumps are still good) but he's very impressive. Best thing, we wouldn't need him too much until 2017 (barring injury) so we'd have a while to figure out his best use. Whether a CB or an extremely athletic 3rd safety I'd love to get him.

FWIW, Logan Ryan
Ryan : combine
Height:5111
Weight:191
40 Yrd Dash:4.56
20 Yrd Dash:2.65
10 Yrd Dash:1.58
225 Lb. Bench Reps:14
Vertical Jump:32 1/2
Broad Jump:09'08"
20 Yrd Shuttle:4.06
3-Cone Drill:6.69

I rate Davis' cover ability better than most, I guess. I think he's a better corner than Burns or Howard, for example, and I'd be absolutely fine going into the season with Butler, Ryan, Davis, and Roberts as our top four guys.

We met with him at the combine too.

41" vert and a 7.04 3-cone. Only 235lb though.

A guy I'd really like to see us pick up late. A tweener who played all over the Dline, he may not have a defined position, but I think he could be a good special teamer while they worked him into the rush rotation at DE/OLB on 3rd and long.

I don't see him playing on the edge. I think it more likely they'll convert him to a linebacker à la Jamie Collins.

This give you an idea of Sean Davis' upside as a CB. He certainly doesn't look a natural there but playing different positions will do that. I do think he can do well as a press cover-1 corner. And our corners tackle really well, it seems to be a Belichick requisite for the position. Davis certainly ticks that box.

From Tony Pauline re Boehringer:

"Coaches and scouts from the Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriotsand Denver Broncos were on hand at Florida Atlantic for the workout of German receiver Moritz Boehringer and once again he impressed future employers.

Boehringer ran an unscripted positional workout where teams requested certain routes during the workout and Boehringer obliged. He not only caught the ball well but absorbed the requests and easily ran the route tree asked of him. Just like his initial pro-day on March 31st, Boehringer looked very natural. He had one-on-one interviews with all the teams in attendance beforehand."

NFL Draft News & Notes: April 8th

Gotta think his preferred team would be the Pats given that they have two German nationals now.

RB, WR, TE?
