D'Brickashaw Ferguson retiring

Completely healthy is a relative term.

The day docs can pick up CTE via a PET/CT scan will be a great day.

Yep. 10 years for any player...let alone a LT who protects the blind side is an eternity. Not to mention he never missed a snap between all that time. Can't imagine how his brain looks after that.

Have to think they'll make a phone call to Denver about Ryan Clady

Just don't give them Mo Wilkerson ya dumb f**ks.

Dontcha just love it when they call the Jets' Front Office, the "brain trust?"

Furgeson was a better than average L:T whose durability made him even more valuable. He was an excellent pass blocker while only an average run blocker. He was a great locker room guy who will be missed more than what Jet fans will say.

His retirement must come as a big surprise to the Jets he'has been such a big constant to their team the last decade. The fact he missed only ONE play over that time is a tribute to his career. In the end he optimized the adage "do your job" because that is what he did for a very long time (in football years) It is a shame he had to toil all those years with the Jets.

If he files the retirement paperwork, he can't come back for at least a year, I think.
he can come back at any time, but the jets would still own his rights, unless they release him.

brett favre filed his papers in february 2009 to retire from the jets, the jets released him in april 2009, and then he un-retired and signed with the vikings in august 2009.

Well we know what position they will draft in Round 1 this year! LOL.

Some are saying he started talking about quitting after seeing the concussion movie

I wonder if they will cut him to eliminate the possibility of unretiring and wreaking havoc on their salary cap one they go off and spend the $$ that just got created by his retirement

same thing as calvin johnsons.........if he wants to play for someone else, all he has to do is come back and the cap hit comes right back too

snazzy way for the player to put the team on the spot
Wouldn't not retiring and not restructuring do the same thing?

Have to think they'll make a phone call to Denver about Ryan Clady
Unless they dump a ton of salary, they could never afford him and sign Fitz.

The evidence is mounting that it did happen that way :) ...this was the article in this morning's print edition of the NY Daily News, first posted online last night...

"In fact, the brain trust has made it clear to Ferguson that a pay reduction would help the team bring back Fitzpatrick, who has been at an impasse with the clubfor more than a month after receiving a low-ball offer."

Dontcha just love it when they call the Jets' Front Office, the "brain trust?"

Jets ask D’Brickashaw to take pay cut for Ryan Fitzpatrick

You know how you never really appreciate your health until someone you know has a major health problem? And you think: "there, but for the Grace of God, go I".

Hearing a story like this makes me appreciate the Patriot organization even more than I did before. :D

What if we had a "brain trust" like that running the Pats.:confused::mad::(

Ferguson certainly wasn't a bust, but he was always overrate. He was a solid and durable LT, but I never thought he was ever near the top of LTs in the league.

But this leaves the Jets in a pretty deep hole. I think they thought that Ferguson would cave to their demands for a pay cut because no one was going to give him big money. I don't think they thought he would choose retirement over a pay cut. This leaves a huge hole on in their offense.

Now their options are limited. I guess they could trade for Clady or hope he gets cut, but after several major injuries how much does he have left? There is always the draft, but getting a rookie to be a day one starter at LT is a risky proposition especially since the Jets don't draft until later in the first and all the blue chip LTs will be gone.

I think the Jets are due for a step back this year. They lost several pieces and guys like Marshall and Revis are at ages that there could be a significant decline. Also, I think they were lucky to get mostly the good Ryan Fitzpatrick and not the bad one last season.

5mil dead I think. Should free up 9mil.
Sucks losing him. One play missed in 10 years and that was because it was a trick formation. Crazy.
I've lived in NYC since Ferguson was drafted and I've always admired him (with a first name like that, who couldn't like him!).

This is, of course, part of the fallout from the Revis contract...a contract to which the Patriots would not agree and about which they have now been proven right....

Wouldn't not retiring and not restructuring do the same thing?

yes and no.......his retirement clears cap space......if they go use that cap space on someone else and then he decides to come back, they are in a cap quandary.

however, sound like a guy who was souring on playing anyway and the pay cut request just made him say 'screw it'

He actually had a pretty solid career after looking not so promising in his first couple of seasons. Best of luck in retirement.

I visited JetsInsider just now to read the JEST fans' "woe is me" reaction……….and nothing ….crickets. In fact, that message board looks practically abandoned. Has their fan base just thrown in the towel?

Long, respectful thread on TheGangGreen.com. 200+ posts

The Jets gain $9M in cap room, but will have to spend that on a replacement. A couple of guys are calling for the Jets to trade Revis to free up cap space to re-build the offensive line and pay Fitzpatrick. They are also worried that Nick Mangold may be at the end as well.

RB Matt Forte must be wondering why he signed up with the Green Beans!

The Jets have sucked at QB forever, but their offensive line has consistently been top shelf.

Ferguson will be missed
