The 2016 NFL Mock Draft Thread

I am really hoping cannon and fleming are not in our team next season.

With mason, Cooper and Jackson, I am not sure Kline will stick.

Stork was injured last season, including a history of concussions, so I am not convinced he is a go for next season.

Vollmer breaks down every year it seems.

Bottom line is we are getting new o linemen one way or another.

My first mock draft on Fanspeak, using CBS/NFL DraftScout:

2016 NFL Mock Draft via Fanspeak's On the Clock Mock Draft Simulator

Most of these picks will be gone - and in some cases, long gone - before we could have a chance to grab them, but hey I can dream.

Keanu Neal at 246? Results like that are why I'm not a fan of these online mocks although they can be a fun way to pass the time. It's a decent mock overall though. I'm just not sure where I stand on Derrick Henry. He could either be an excellent NFL RB or a very average one - I just don't know which way he'll end up.

First pick simulator

Round 2 Pick 30: Austin Johnson, DT, Penn State
Round 3 Pick 1 (TENN): Shilique Calhoun, DE/OLB, Michigan State
Round 3 Pick 28: Zack Sanchez, CB, Oklahoma
Round 3 Pick 33 (COMP): Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana
Round 4 Pick 15 (TENN): Jordan Jenkins, OLB, Georgia
Round 5 Pick 1 (TENN): Willie Beavers, OT, Western Michigan
Round 6 Pick 21: Tajae Sharpe, WR, Massachusetts
Round 6 Pick 29: Kevin Peterson, CB, Oklahoma State
Round 6 Pick 33 (COMP): Dan Vitale, FB, Northwestern
Round 6 Pick 39 (COMP): D.J. Pettway, DE, Alabama
Round 6 Pick 46 (COMP): Demarcus Robinson, WR, Florida
Round 7 Pick 22: Luther Maddy, DT, Virginia Tech
Round 7 Pick 29: Deiondre' Hall, CB, Northern Iowa

Love rhe Peterson pick (a binky of mine) and I'd be thrilled by Johnson and Calhoun with the first two picks. Less of a fan of Sanchez however and would prefer a better OT than Beavers personally. Nice mock though.

Kline was solid last year up until his injury. Job seems to be his to lose.

Stork got put on short term IR at the beginning of the season but once he returned he didn't miss any games to injury so not really sure how you think he won't play next season.

Ya Vollmer has an injury history but he only failed to play in at least 14 games twice and has played in 10 out of 13 playoff games since he joined the team.

As for getting new OL well the team gets to have 90 guys in camp and right now they have about 75 so of course there is a probability they bring in a couple of OL.

I wouldn't wait until the 6th round to draft an OLman.

In fact, so great is my disgust with this OL that I wouldn't complain if almost half of our picks
were used on OLmen.
There is virtually no chance that a third day OT will become a starter. Tough year not to have a #1.
The first two picks should be an OT and a DT. Double up on day #3 to increase chances for a decent
RB and WR.

It's a good thing they don't need a rookie to start at ot then. With Solder, Vollmer, and Cannon there. They may need a backup this year and a rt starter next year.

It would be a good idea to get next year's right tackle on the roster now to have a smooth transition from Vollmer. Hopefully, Cannon and Fleming (the twin turnstiles) will end up on other teams this year.

Two quibbles: it has 13 players in it and yet no QB (need a succession plan for Garoppolo, especially if they plan to trade him).

Ya 13 players. Which is only 2 more draft picks than the Pats currently have now.

As for not drafting a QB, well I don't see them trading Garoppolo so no reason to draft another QB this year.

Also it was a simulator mock and I went with what was IMO BPA at no time was a QB BPA.

Here is a mock that I picture people hoping for

Round 2 Pick 26 (G.B.): Le'Raven Clark, OT, Texas Tech
Round 2 Pick 32 (DEN): Austin Johnson, DT, Penn State
Round 3 Pick 28: Landon Turner, OG, North Carolina
Round 3 Pick 33 (COMP): Connor McGovern, OG, Missouri
Round 4 Pick 4 (S.D.): Rashard Higgins, WR, Colorado State
Round 6 Pick 33 (COMP): Kevin Peterson, CB, Oklahoma State
Round 6 Pick 39 (COMP): Daniel Braverman, WR, Western Michigan
Round 6 Pick 46 (COMP): Deiondre' Hall, CB, Northern Iowa
Round 7 Pick 22: D.J. Foster, RB, Arizona State

I was listening to someone on a podcast (might have been Dane Brugler) and he was saying that Deiondre Hall struggled as a CB but when he switched to safety late in the year he was excellent. I have to confess, the couple of films I saw of Hall playing CB weren't very impressive.

Hall and Turner are the only two picks in that mock that I'm not so keen on - unlike some, I don't think we need a surfeit of interior linemen. Put a RB in that Turner spot and that will be an excellent mock.

Yeah I agree that Neal, Russell & Sterling Shepherd will likely finish the process ranked higher on the CBS/NFL DraftScout list before the draft. I used CBS because their's is a bigger database than the others (I think). Regarding Derrick Henry, I agree that he is a bang/whimper type, but at the end of the 2nd round I thought he was too tempting to pass up.

Used fanspeaks cbs ratings, no trades.
2. Sean Davis db
2. Connor McGovern ol

6. Jalin Marshall wr
6. Jeff Driskel qb
6. Hala Vaitai ot
7. Chris Brown wr
7. Elijah Shumate s

Hopefully realistic if nothing else.

I'm using the Play The Draft big board for the first three rounds and then a combination of ESPN and CBS for the later rounds.

I'm starting off with a Trade Up. Patriots trade 60, 91, 196 (448 pts) to Washington for 53, 120, 159 (451 pts). We lose a third, but get a 4th and 5th back. Trade is necessary because the better prospects like Calhoun and Austin Johnson are likely to be off the board by #60.

#53 (Wash). Shilique Calhoun, EDGE, Michigan State

A toss up between Austin Johnson and Shilique Calhoun and I'd be fine with either one. Calhoun gets the edge here because pass rushers carry a premium and because of the depth at DT in this class.

#60 **Traded**

#61 **Traded to TB for 74, 108**

#74 (TB). Jerald Hawkins, OT, LSU

Personally I think Clark and Coleman have the better upside, but Hawkins is the better fit for our zone blocking system, is more experienced and has been worked out by Dante. And, most big boards portray him as the better value of the three with a fairly consistent mid 3rd round grade, thus allowing the trade.

#91 **Traded**

#96. Hassan Ridgeway, DT, Texas

I don't think there's a huge drop off from Austin Johnson to Ridgeway and as @Brady6 has noted, pairing Brown and Ridgeway means pairing two players who know each other's game.

#108(TB) Connor Mcgovern, OL, Missouri

Has played LT, RT, LG, RG and is one of the most athletic linemen in the draft. And was worked out by Dante. Shouldn't need to add anything.

#120 (Wash). Jonathan Williams, RB, Arkansas

Maybe Procise or Howard are the more likely pick for the Pats, but based upon his 2014 tape, I think Williams is the best of the three, by some margin. A lot will depend on his medicals though. But this pick would be fantastic value.

#159 (Wash). Keivarae Russell, CB, Notre Dame

Started off the year graded in the 2nd round but now is being seen as a 4th-6th round prospect because of time lost. Ran a 4.4 forty, 4.09 shuttle, jumped over 11' and 38" and had a 6.89 3-cone. Value with a capital 'V'.

#196 **Traded**

#204. Cody Core, WR, Mississippi State

Outside receiver that can get vertical and is 6'3" with big hands. Has a good reputation for character, plays special teams, ran sub 4.5 and had a 6.75 3-cone. It was between him and Chris Moore for this pick. I'd take whichever of the two was available.

#208. Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford

Hogan is one of the smartest QBs in the draft, comes from Stanford and, I believe, is the only QB we've been told the Pats have had contact with. It's well worth bringing in a developmental QB.

#214. David Morgan II, TE, Texas-San Antonio

He's slow (faster at his pro-day) but he's the best blocking TE in the draft, has good hands and a sub 7.00 3-cone. Camp competition for Michael Williams.

#221 Stephen Anderson, WR/TE, California

A move TE or big nickel. Will provide camp competition for AJ Derby and should see time on special teams. Has legitimate upside as a quick pass catcher in the nickel that is too quick for linebackers and that should give safeties consternation.

#243. Chris Swain, FB, Navy

A better runner/receiver than Develin and is no mean blocker too. I was impressed with what little I saw of him.

#250. Steven Daniels, LB, Boston College

You won't want him on the field on passing downs but you will if the opposition are playing smash mouth as he's a terrific run defender, hits like a truck.

Priority UDFA - Keenan Reynolds.

I'm not as keen on him as the Patriots seem to be so he probably needs to be included.

Priority UDFA - Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Miss

Not sure where his true value lies yet so I'm including his as a UDFA for now. I'd take him as high as the 5th personally. FWIW, PFF love him, just as they did Darryl Roberts last year. Disrupted a pass (interception/deflection) on 20% of his targets last year and is one of the better CBs against the run.

Note: I regret not being able to find a place for Daniel Braverman. It was touch and go between him David Morgan II. Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably switch them.

If the best players are off the board at 60, I wouldn't object to trading back both 60 and 61 and even 91 because I really like the 4th and 5th round values this year.

You could still pick up two of Ridgeway, Hawkins, Jordan Jenkins potentially and grab a RB at 96. And then you have the potential for a bunch of good CBs in the 4th/5th; Cyrus, Keivarae, Eric Murray, Ryan Smith, James Bradberry, Kalan Reed. Find a falling WR or take a guy like Braverman early if you don't think he'll be there in the 6th and maybe get a second athletic RB like Lasco, Ervin or Marshall. And then that still leaves you with six picks in the last two rounds to draft camp competition or fill any remaining holes.

If Austin Johnson, Shilique Calhoun and Braxton Miller are off the board at 60 and if Coleman, Clark, Hawkins are still on the board, I'd have no problem with trading back with both picks.

Agreed, I'd be very tempted by him at 60. He could be a steal there, I just get worried by his upright running style.

Really nice mock Manx. I like Ridgeway as you know and I am a fan of Williams as well, I think he can be a real good pro. He doesn't have great top end speed but his 1.57 10 yard split is impressive, same split Peterson ran at the combine back on 2007.

Very nice mock! Love the two navy kids.

Will Russell be ready for camp by August? I thought he got hurt bad last year?

Prediction: if the Pats take another Midshipman, they will draft him before round 6 ends.

Prediction: if the Pats do not draft a QB this year, they plan to hold Garoppolo until near Week 1 of 2017, if not later.
