Is Danny Amendola the next domino to fall?

Perhaps so, but not necessarily so.
Given Edelperson's recovery unknowns it's wise to keep Dola until Julian shows on field that he's himself again.
Amendola can be cut any time before the start of the season without being on the hook for his '16 salary.

My wishful thinking is that he again restructures, better sooner than later.
Agreed, though it's a tough situation/call (made moot or at least way easier if DA restructures), because it's not only about how Edelman looks in July and August but moreso what'd you'd expect him to look like in Dec/Jan, and also how well Hogan works his way in. Martin and Washington (or surprise rookie) may be relevant as well, but DA is better than those guys until proven otherwise. Washington different skill set of course, but I digress.

Not a totally fair comparison for at least a couple reasons (FA vs under contract, WW attitude, Murderer situation), but while the team absolutely did the right thing long-term in the Welker situation, the 2013 squad would have been well served keeping him (or even Lloyd) around for that season.

I'm not a big believer in the idea that you can plan for all injuries, sometimes you just gotta admit you're going to have big problems if A,B, or C goes down, but while Amendola no longer looks like a sure fire starter on this squad, he is the answer to a lot of "what-ifs" for a team with several new parts coming in on offense and Edelman having really only semi-successfully played 2 games on his foot.

Face it, if Jules comes into camp and isn't himself after his injury, he could be cut and Dola becomes the #1. BB is nothing if not coldly objective about what it is today, not what a player was in the past.

I don't get the anti-Amendola tone in this thread. The guy is a trusted receiver by Brady and McDaniels. Danny Amendola is a huge reason why the Patriots won Super Bowl 49. He was great in the playoffs. He's a terrific sure-handed return man, one of the best in the league. He's one of those tough players who plays through injuries and lays it all on the line.

You hang onto those guys and pay them. He's been willing to re-work his deal in the past. He'll do it again. Everything I've read about Danny Amendola indicates he loves being here, living in New England, and filling an important, multi-faceted role.

No
If Jules is still recovering he goes on one of the PUP designations if he never takes the field or one of the IR lists depending on outlook and other wounded.

I wonder why it's taking so long to get this all figured out.... If Danny wants to be here, then just take the cut so we can move on

I wonder if they've even approached him yet or they're waiting for later in the offseason when every team has used up their capspace so they can have more leverage.

There have been tweets by media members saying that the Pats have been trying to rework Amendola's deal.

Many posters simply underestimate the roles and importance of Amendola. We sign Washington, who might make the team, and all of a sudden Amendola is gone. Nonsense!

That being said, the team apparently needs Amendola to take yet another play cut. There is no pressure on either him or the team to do this any time soon.

Should the team choose to move on and hope that Hogan immediately steps in and be a key receiver catching 70% of his targets, then fine. Perhaps, we'll find another top returner without having to use an extra roster spot on game day.

I think that it would be a serious loss for Amendola to move to another team. I expect a new restructure.

Edelman isn't going anywhere.

Which really means nothing.

Great to catch up on this thread today. I think the summary is:
  • Amendola might or might not take a pay cut, and might or might not be with the team this year. Nobody here has any facts to indicate one direction or the other. There is some rumbling on Twitter from the media, without any substantiation.
  • Patsfans forum has about average US capability when it comes to addressing the issue of race, and a random glancing political comment has as much power as Goodell to send the Board into a spiral.

They won't make a move on Amendola until after the draft. If somebody at WR falls into their lap he will be cut with a June 1 desig. If not then they will press for a restructure and look at the waiver wire.

This is another long running thread I've avoided like the Plague for over 400 posts, but today is that slow for me and I've decided to add my 2 cents.

Like many I don't understand why so many posters are completely fine with Amendola leaving. This is a guy who came in. Played badly injured during his first game with the team and literally was the main offensive reason they won the game (Buffalo). Since that time he's done nothing but do everything the team has asked him to do, and done it well.....very well. He's even remained relatively healthy the last 2 seasons.

Granted you'd rather not have your 3rd WR have a $6MM cap number, but you are also paying him to be a prime contributor to special teams as well. So while his cap number is highish, it is not, or ever has been, outrageously high.

I really wish people would start to understand just how difficult this offensive system is for WR's to learn and be reliable in. Danny Amendola is someone who has earned Brady's trust. That is not easy. I think we'd be more loathe to toss someone like that aside so casually, when finding a suitable replacement is both difficult and uncertain.

I like what I've heard about Hogan. I think having both Edelman and Amendola BOTH on the team give us the necessary depth that is required by a WR playing their role in in this offense. And I still have hopes that Dobson might just come around - So when you are given the expanded role the TE's will play in this year's offense, I think we are in great shape at WR at this point this year. I can't imagine a scenario that would have the Pats getting rid of Amendola merely to save a few million dollars on the cap, ESPECIALLY when both sides would agree to contract renegotiation that save some immediate money.

And how this topic lasted over 400 posts is beyond me.....I just read the last 2 pages, and don't doubt the previous 20 were pretty much the same. ;)

Agreed. I'm really intrigued to see if the Pats take Braxton Miller. If they do, Amendola can't feel good about his prospects here.

This Amendola thread....The grave can't hold it...nothing human can stop it....its THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE.:eek::eek:

Edelman isn't going anywhere.
Correct. For crissakes, he came back against KC and was gangbusters. This **** about doubting his future is puzzling, gloom and doom crap. There is no reason he won't be 100%. None.

Let's be clear. No draftee available to use could cause belichick to immediately cut Amendola. The very idea that Belichick would have so much confidence in his choice of a draftee being an immediate contributor is simply silly.

Let me be blunt.

Cutting Amendola would make the team considerably worse, at WR and at returner.

We need to remember that new WR's have no guarantees of success in their first year (Hogan. Washington and/or a draftee). Heck, Washington may not even make the squad.

We also need to remember that we need depth at wide receiver; they do get injured. BTW, is Edelman at 100%? is Martin?

And, yeah, it is a good idea to have a returner that can be trusted. We really don't want Edelman returning punts.

I don't get this notion being repeated over and over.
I can see a whole lotta love for Danny here. Not many players get as much.
That's one reason why the thread is still alive

If you look closely everybody wants him to stay.
Some question his role after new signings and his salary.
Should the possible #4-6 target (excluding Lewis and putting JE, RG, MB in front)
and #1 returner get more than Julian?
Then again - should he get less than the possible #4-6 target not proven on Pats yet? (Hogan)
One problem is that JE&RG are underpaid.
But if everyone in this overloaded offence gets what he deserves then NE can dismiss other units.
Bradys clever restructures keep this boat afloat for the moment.
But if NE loses High or Collins on account of overloading the offence I dont think many people here will be happy.

EDIT:
what this team desperately needs is drafting quality offensive players
it will not likely happen this year
so I guess theres gonna be some serious restructure of offence in 2017
(but its not easy if your top pick for more than a decade is at #30 something . ..
and what this management is doing in these 15 years is close to a miracle)
