Is Danny Amendola the next domino to fall?

Yet a clown like dobson's still on this roster. Dobson was another draft failure at wr and should be cut

I think it's safe to think that he eventually will be, but in the meantime his salary isn't really hurting things. It's possible they are waiting until TC to see how he looks, or they may just cut him once their WR corps is clearer. The draft may be a part of this process.

So you'd be okay with Danny making more this year than Gronk and Edelman?
My preference is to reward the better players on the team so no, I'm not but this isn't a Danny vs. Minitron vs. Gronk thing. This is a how many times do you keep reworking contracts thing.

Like most others, I would prefer that Amendola stays, but let's be realistic, there are some obvious limitations to his game, and the addition of Hogan may make his role somewhat redundant.

For example, yes--he's coming off of his best year here statistically speaking, but a good portion of that production was after Edelman went down. During that time, the team went 4-4. To take it one step further, Amendola's last 4 games produced yardage totals of 3, 17, 18, and 39.

Like I said, I'd much rather have him stay because he provides some insurance to #11, as well as punt return duties, but he's going to have to take a pay cut and accept a reduced role if he's going to stay in Foxborough. We'll see if both sides are good with that. I'm guessing that at least one is not.

Pats can save $4M by cutting him = definitely worth consideration. Gotta replace him though, so it's unlikely that the net savings would be significant unless the Pats cheap out pretty hard on WR3 (which I wouldn't advocate).

I'll be the first to concede that Amendola frankly hasn't been very good for us, and has in no way lived up to his contract. I also think the injuries are taking a toll on his body, and he isn't as good as he was two years ago when he got here. He's small and rarely gets open, to the point that if he is open downfield I assume the flag for a pick is coming... and it always does. He's still somewhat effective, but IMO it's almost entirely because Brady is so good at throwing into the tiny windows that are really all he can manage. He doesn't make Brady's job easier in the way that good receivers do, though.

But if you figure it'll take $2M to get someone that you'd be comfortable putting at WR3, then you're adding an element of uncertainty to the offense in order to save $2M. Seems like a risky proposition, only worth it if someone that the Pats feel really good about becomes available. Although I would consider Nate Washington an adequate replacement, and relatively low-risk since he's produced in all sorts of systems, including Bill O'Brien's.

Also, cutting him now would also let the team avoid taking a $1.4M dead cap hit cutting him next year, which is also a consideration when you consider that Collins and Butler are both due for huge raises.

If they cut Dola their is going to be a block party on his street in RI & the
Patsfans Dola Koolaid drinkers will need to be talked off the ledge.

His cap number is too high & the savings are to good not to move on.

One thing I love about Belichick, he is not sentimental.

Id rip the bandaid off and just cut him. He and Bolden piss me off on how they perfect all the little things like blocking and st but cant do the main thing you want from them. Receiving and getting open for Amendola and just rushing for Bolden. It makes the cuts hard but Amendola's durability has to factor in as well and I think it pushes the scale to cut him.

its not only about the money anymore its about space
unless they plan half of the receivers will end up on IR
theres just not enough room on the field
apart from gronk, jules, hogan, bennet most people forget also martin
maybe he can take pay cut the question is can he take the marginalized role
(as mostly just punt returner?)

PS
i really like him and ill be happy if he can stay
just preparing for goodbye

I'm still going as said in the Bennett thread.

Amendola shipped to the Browns and Flash comes to the Patriots.

As with Bennett deal, picks are swapped to sweeten the deal. 4th to Patriots 6th to Browns.

I also would not be surprised to see Bill O'Brien be interested also in Amendola.

I'd HATE to cut him. He's such a valuable piece. He was the guy we needed all those years when nobody would step up and make a big play in the playoffs. I don't think his cap hit is that unreasonable. You only save 4.1 mil cutting him. That's essestislly his real cap hit because you don't get that 2.7 back.

Off topic but if the Pats could somehow get J.Gordon that would be amazing. Rare athlete who can take a 5 yard quick slant 80-90 yards for a TD. I love Edelman but Gordon adds another dimension and game breaking ability no Pats WR's have. I know its a long shot but hey with the way things have gone here last few days you could never say never.

I like Amendola for the right price. However with Hogan and Edelman you don't really need him if he wants to be paid more than 2.5M. IDK what we would do for WR if he goes but with Bennett I worry about it a little less.

Vet wide receiver on the cheap + rookie draft pick in the top few rounds. That's what I'm guessing. Much like you, I'd prefer to see DA stay on a cheaper deal, but the signing of Hogan may help to make him expendable. He also may not wish to take another pay cut again.

Are people already dismissing Martin, Harper and Dobson? You've got to figure one or two of those three will be around, although I think people here are too quick to underestimate Amendola's value and I'd like to see him stay (don't forget his kick/punt return skills). Adding a rookie speedster to the group would seem plausible going into camp but I don't see the need to do much more.

I'd be happy with this bunch:

Edelman
Amendola
Hogan
Martin
Dobson or Harper or rookie

If Gordon gets reinstated and its not us that trades for him id be devestated id give up one of our seconds in a instant if he is reinstated

Not more than a fourth that can turn into a third. He is one strike away from another full season (or even longer) ban and hasn't had a proper season of football in over two years.

Amendola has great hands and is a reliable punt returner. I don't know of y'all can remember but the Pat's had a little difficulty with catching punts last year which cost them a game, which meant that the AFC championship game was played in Denver and not Foxboro.

Unless you want to risk Edelman returning punts ( he is great at it and would definitely put him back there in the playoffs) but I think we all saw what a dip this offense does without him.

Hopefully Dola can lower his number and stay, but still it's not like he has a 10 million dollar cap number.

amendola was perfect last year when he was the 3rd or 4th option on offense. I remember the Jets game where he smoked their 3rd best corner all day when Edelman was held largely in check. Alas with edelman out he struggled abit with injuries etc.

I have to believe that Amendola would be very open to restructuring for one year. He seems like a very "patriots" type player. He knows he is NOT going to get 5million on the open market...a 30yeard old injury prone receiver.

hes only going to get more open with gronk, bennet, edelman, lewis on the field.

Amendola zero returns for TD.. Martin has two, both punt returns.

Martin has the better KR avg, but Amendola has the better P/R avg.

Amendola 30 yrs old, Martin 26 yrs old

Martin was 26 two days ago, Amendola turns 31 in November. #context

Currently Amendola 6.8m or Martin 1.2m cap hit.

Danny A has to get his deal to around $2.5m. If he does not he will be cut. That is fact (according to me :p )

If the Patriots manage to wrangle Josh Gordon from the Browns, I will cancel all my business appointments early next year and see you all at the Super Bowl.

I'm as big of a Gordon fan as there is and I think it's a travesty that he's been put into the position he has, but I don't think he's worth the gamble. He's one strike away from being banned from the league. Which btw, is another reason why I'm getting fed up with the NYJFL.

I think the biggest reason Amendola restructures is what is his market out in the open? he surely wont get 5million...its probably close to the 2.5 the pats would ask him to take. and for him to stay in a winning situation where he can thrive I think he would do it.
