Umm take a look at the first 10 pages of this thread. People were jumping for joy for cooper

Its called shiny new toy syndrome.

Yet you keep responding right?

Are Collins and Hightower not amazing at attacking the A gaps? Whos responsible for containing that?

No, but according to you Chandler the one that got all the protection is way right? A double digit sack guy, that set the protection, and was doubled would be traded away for a late second and a project guard?

I know exactly who is responsible for the A Gaps. The Guards and Center. But they do not PULL to cover the position. Which is what you claimed Zolak and Bedard said.

I didn't say that Chandler got all the protection his way. And neither did Upstarter. But keep making things up.

OH. you forgot a major part of the trade. A freeing up of 5.4M on the salary cap and the fact that the highest compensation we could have gotten for Jones is a late 3rd round pick 2 years from now. That would be the equivalent of a late 5th round this year. So the Pats actually gained 3 rounds on the draft pick.

Bottom line: if the Pats didn't need $ to extend high, Collins and butler(and to a lesser degree, sheard), I don't think this trade happens. But this is the real world. Jones is a very good, occasionally great, but also wildly inconsistent player. High, Collins and butler are obviously better players than jones. If the Pats could afford him, they keep him. As for the trade, right now its a wash., but has the potential to favor Pats if cooper actually plays well and the 2nd rounder contributes. Cooper is in a situation a lot like JE was a few years ago. Limited by injuries. We just don't know how he's gonna turn out. But I live in his hometown. He was a beast in hs and at unc.

I'm confused, this trade seems like kinda a wash....

Cooper is garbage, Jones wasn't going to resign here, the pick is a low 2nd,

Jones probably won't resign with cards either.

Just seems like a wash for both teams.

Also, Chandler jones is awesome, some of u have said he's average, or good... No he's awesoke.

He played 11 games in the NFL, how is he terrible? Not even one season. He is injury prone but terrible? Cannon is terrible...

I agree with you,HT, Collins and Butler are better, but besides that they will be cheaper. DE are too expensive you can have Collins and Butler maybe for the price of CJ. You need depth to win you dont sacrifice that for CJ...

Exactly. I'm also hopeful grissom and flowers will step up this year

I'm just happy NE nailed their drafts, UDFA, and development and molded 4 players into top end talent….talent this Pats D hasn't seen the likes of since last decade. Better to have these types of decisions then lack of talent decisions.
Now lets visit the jeweler and size up the next ring :p

Rufus ain't no doofus. I want him to have an impact just do we can hear the "Roof-fus! Roof-fus!" chants at Gillette.
Totally.

I really think he can be a pretty decent sub on this team. Too bad he got hurt.

This defense has a chance to be something special. Look at all the young dudes who have showed promise but haven't had much of a chance yet: Roberts, Richards, grissom, flowers, rufus.. You know both Malcolm's will be even better. Now if easley can stay on the field....

I agree on pretty much everything, but what has Grissom shown? He seems a lot more like a Bequette to me...

He has a lot more speed than Bequette. Very flexible from a positional standpoint.

Grissom is not a fringe roster player. Hes a keeper.

I hope you're right. I just don't remember him doing or showing anything, at least when compared to guys like Rufus, Flowers, and even Eric Martin last preseason/TC.

I thought he showed quite a bit more..........after all, it is impossible to show less

Can't argue with that.

They were "jumping for joy" because we got a 2nd rounder PLUS a player.. I think people know to temper expectations, but this kid was considered one of the best OL prospects coming out in a long, long time.. he broke his leg, had a rough 2nd year and then only started half the season in his final year with the Cardinals..

Knowing that the Patriots just got Dante Scarnechia out of retirement not only increases people's optimism for the unit improving, but it makes a reclamation project with a player like Cooper that much more exciting as well.

Scar coming back is a very big deal

I know. I got from this post they have to announce whether they'll pick up the option by this May but it's not guaranteed until next March. And if that's not the issue, I'll shut up and return to lurking. :)

Yep. I think you're spot on that they'd have to decide by May, but that they have until March 2017 before it is permanent and definitely will count against the cap for 2017.

ive been saying this before the trade, so I dont want to see all the "oh typical pats fan hating someone as they go out the door" but CHandler Jones is a GOOD SOLID player who can get you 12sacks a year....BUT I cant remember a big game where he took it over. when we drafted him I was hoping he would be a justin tuck or JPP or cameron wake or jj watt where they can just take over games. but all too often he could get shut down one on one. he had 1 sack vs a playoff team last year, and his production dipped late in the season.

Did you hear his name much in the broncos game against their OL? Couple that with his late season swoon and the fact that a crappy team IS going to offer him a rediculous contract next season that the pats wont pay and you see why he is gone. We really should have seen it coming with the Pats drafting two DE's last year in Flowers and Grissom. Pats have to look to pay Hightower, collins and Butler. and those three guys are alot more integral to this defense than jones.

thats not to say that our DL isnt worse off today without him than it would be with him. Trey flowers, grissom and Long are more projections at this point than sure things. but in Bill I trust.
