DE Chris Long signs one-year contract with Patriots

We replace Jones with C. Long. Looks like Arizona is trying to replace Cooper with E. Mathis. Interesting stuff to see how this all shakes down.
From what AZ fans are saying, Cooper was already replaced at both guard spots and he was just fighting for a backup spot on the roster.

Saints fans were pretty down on Hicks too, so hopefully a change of scenery will jumpstart Cooper as well.

Browner was pretty decent in Seattle and NE... Goes to NO and becomes the worst CB in the league. Coaching and scheme matters a lot in this league

Not sure if this has been posted here yet, but I just wanted to remind everyone of a great piece Chris Long wrote last year about "DeflateGate" A Player's Take on Deflategate | By Chris Long
That article is very well written. Thoughtful, honest, entertaining.
And not just because he was on our side. A majority of the media could take a lesson or two from Long. You can have an opinion without making it a hit piece, you can question things without playing judge, jury and executioner, and still engage and entertain people.

Happy he's now a Patriot and will be able to experience up close what he seemingly has admired from afar.

I said something similar in a different thread, and I'm biased obviously, but DAMN it must feel good when you get signed by the Patriots.. Like, I just picture Long hanging up the phone and immediately blasting "damn it feels good to be a gangsta."

Certainly possible. I'm very curious as to what his contract will pay. Any guesses? I am gonna say $2.5 million with up to $5 million if he hits all incentives.
It's going to be way more than that.

well, this is what peter king had to say

Long’s deal is for approximately $3 million (also his cap number)

I'm good with this move, just what I wanted after the Jones trade. While it's questionable how much Long has left at this point it gives our DE group more margin for error, reducing out dependency on Ninkovich holding off father time and Flowers/Grissom making a second-year leap somewhat.

Absolute steal. Awesome. He must be betting on himself to make a lot more next offseason after the Pats have rehabbed his value like they did Ayers, Hicks, etc.

Agreed 100 percent.

It may even be a situation which sets up a very nice return to success from Long. He's the kind of experienced vet who will work hard and act as a leader in the locker room, so it's really all about whether or not he can have a good offseason/training period, and whether or not he can stay healthy. You know that he can still bring it on the field.

If the reports of a 3m dollar deal are true, this was a complete no brainer in my opinion. Good signing.

If that's true (and I hope so), absolute no-brainer. Don't we still have cap-space from the Jones trade left if it's indeed a three-million deal?

Long's gonna be the third player to be on the Patriots from the top 20 overall picks in the 2008 Draft: Long (#2), Mayo (#10), Talib (#20).

I'm pretty sure it'd be something north of 2m dollars.

So to recap...the Pats trade CJ and save 5 million, use that (or part of it) to sign Chris Long.

Lose a late 3rd comp pick, likely, and get a second 2 years earlier in exchange.

AND get a reclamation project with huge upside who thus far has been not good, but in a position of great need.

Unless you feel like long will be a huge drop-off from CJ, this is a pretty good day.

(Oh, and I still think Trey Flowers is going ot be pretty damned good, and Rufus Johnson will be a capable backup.)

This sums it up quite nicely AND I also think Flowers is gonna "blossom" this year also

Long seems to play the edge a lot like Easley does. Strangely effective in both the pass and especially the run with mostly a controlled bull rush. Not really a sack artist but has great closing speed to get those effort tackles. I actually think us and probably the ravens are the perfect fits for his controlled yet relentless style of play.

Gotta admit I was nervous with the team trading Jones and Long having plans visiting other teams. Seems all along they had an agreement in place before the trade was made. Personally I'm excited, Long has gotta be hungry and looking to redeem himself and show the world he can still play at a high level. With the coaching and supporting cast around him, no better team to join. Now he just needs a new number, no way Collins is giving up #91.

He left Jason Garrett hanging out at Red Lobster in Dallas. That is cold. You don't leave a guy hanging at Red lobster alone.

Agreed. I got stood up at Red Lobster once. All that extra time waiting caused me to order a second Admiral's Feast. I ended up needing two full weeks to get over being stood up at Red Lobster....:)

Sheard, nink, long, flowers and grissom is not too shabby.

Ninkovich and Long are older guys on contracts ending after this season. It feels like it's overhaul time.

Long’s deal is for approximately $3 million (also his cap number)

On a one year deal, pay and cap hit tend to be similar. :)

(It would be instructive to try to think of the exceptions. For starters I have:
  • NLTBE incentives that are actually earned.
  • LTBE incentives that are not.
  • That deal where experienced vets on minimum deals have artificially low cap hits.)
