Chandler Jones Traded

I just don't see jones as a great player, good player yes. I thought a 3rd rounder would've been fair. So I'm definitely happy with the trade

This doesn't make any sense to me. A 3rd rounder is automatic. You get that as a compensation pick. So, essentially, the 3rd rounder is the floor. You're going to get a 3rd rounder for Chandler regardless.

But if you wait a year, you also get Chandler.

The only way this makes any sense is if Butler, Collins and Hightower all sign team friendly long-term contracts this year. In that case, it will be about the cap.

And that I can accept. But I doubt this is the scenario we are about to see.

Pats get: 2016 2nd round + Cooper and Cards get Jones

If he dont re-sign with the cardinals they will get a 3rd round comp pick (2017)

So they were really smart

No they get one in 2018, if they don't sign an offsetting free agent.

Disappeared too much and will want a TON of $$. Smart move to cut bait and now we can focus on DH Collins and Butler

Well, obviously the pats talked with all three of their big extension prospects and didn't like what they heard back from Jones. Combine that with his stunt last year in the most important week of the season and I guess this isn't surprising that they were actively shopping him.

Don't know how I feel about it. Jones never was quite the player I hoped, but when he flashed, he really flashed.

I really don't know how much the drug episode played into this trade. It was so out of character. As we learned with AH you never really know these people.

I think it had more to do with the meteoric rise of Malcolm Butler and the play of Sheard.

I wonder if the Cleveland proposal involved Gordon. Probably not, but you never know.

You give no credit to the earlier year of the pick?

I like the trade. While Jones was a very good pass rusher he was injured to often, he seemed to wear down every year. Long, Sheard, someone else on the roster or a draft pick can fill his spot. It save over $8 million and we get pick #61. The pats desperately need inside line help and cooper was very highly rated when he was drafted. I don't know how he played in zona, but if he didn't live up to where he was picked maybe a change of scenery and scar can change that.

I never forget that BB was an economist first, and if you view this transaction through that lens (remembering as well increased cap space, potential good value for money in the player coming back) the deal seems to make a lot of sense.

But you're forgetting the fact that you have to hit on your picks. For every Gronkowski and Vollmer, we've had a lot of Darius Butler and whatever that safety out of Virginia's name was (name somehow escapes me).

I like the trade. Sure, you lose a good player in Jones, but also somebody that tended to disappear at times AND showed poor judgement with the synthetic weed incident. We were going to let him go anyway, but instead picked up a 2nd rounder and a former top 10 pick with huge upside. Yes, Cooper has been a disappointment. However, the man broke his fibula in his rookie year. That is no small feat to overcome. He still worked his way back into a starting role, but ended up dealing with more injuries including a knee, a wrist and turf toe. Perhaps with a change of scenery, top notch coaching, and knock on wood, a return to good health, he can end up being something special. The deal allows the Pats to resign more highly coveted players, to potentially provide better protection to Brady, and gives us another chip in the draft. I will take that.

Who knows a second could still do the trick though but we would have to know if he is reinstated have a serious talk with him and have him speak with Tom.

Its alot of variables high risk but so was Moss and Dillon

Hmmmmmm.

I think I would do 2nd rounder + Gordon over 2nd rounder + Cooper.

Jones is going to rip it up in Arizona being able to pin his ears back. Hopefully Cooper won't continue to suck and embarrass us in this trade.

If Cooper gives us anything, I'm happy. The second is just a cherry on top.

The best move/s the Pats can do this off season is extending the contracts of Collins and Hightower. Locking up those guys long term would be better than any FA signing you can get. If this trade allows us to do that, it was worth it.

Well I'll be happy not having to face Jones twice (perhaps 3 times) a season. Overall I think this lowers the level of talent NE fields in 2016, but it could prove to be a great move.

BB gets rid of a very good player before he becomes a big cap hit. It's his philosophy. And it's hard to argue with his results over the years.

Whereas ya take the Jets... look at the Wilkerson situation. Great player?.. definitely. But we have two extremely good younger/cheaper guys in Sheldon and Williams. Can't help but think using BB's strategy, the Jets would be free of Wilk's cap hit of like 15mil this year and he'd probably be playing for some NFC team. While we had received a solid draft pick in return.

On the other hand keeping Jones/Wilk also has upsides. Certainly no guarantee draft picks will turn out well.

Cooper? I remember wanting to draft him and he could still turn his career around. Ya need oline help. But he has been a bust so far.

It'll probably take a year or two to determine if this was a smart move. Fun to watch different coaching/GMing strategies at work though.

Hmmmmmm.

I think I would do 2nd rounder + Gordon over 2nd rounder + Cooper.

Me too, in a heartbeat. Cooper's been a borderline bust and Gordon's been a superstar, despite his foibles. But it's also possible Gordon wasn't involved, or if he was then a 2nd round pick was not involved.
