Chandler Jones Traded

from PFT

The Patriots have a decision to make even more quickly. By May 3, they must exercise (or not) guard Jonathan Cooper’s 2017 option. Because Cooper was picked in the top 10 of the 2013 draft, his option salary for 2017 matches the transition tender for offensive linemen in 2016. The magic number is a whopping $11.902 million.

Per multiple sources, Cooper did not adjust his contract in connection with the trade. It means that the Patriots will have to decide based on limited information whether to pick up an option that, if exercised, will give Cooper an injury-only guaranteed of $11.902 million for 2017.

Either way, Cooper has a base salary of $675,000 for 2016. If the option isn’t exercised, it will be Cooper’s contract year

With another 2nd round pick i can see them drafting braxton miller

I think people should stop thinking that BB is pressured to move up because of the pissgate pick. That's not a good line of thinking. Just continue operations as normal.
i agree i have a feeling the pats stay put and just Draft back to back

Get working on those extensions Bill n' friends! Butler could get a crazy contract as a RFA.

Loved Chandler Jones but this was an obvious move, and a good one!
You are right. The move was obvious.

Well I had it right with Jones and what Team would want him in AZ, I thought WR like Michael Floyd would be the hot ticket. I was giggled at for a trade. Oh well right church, wrong pew.

I think that the Long visit might have been the catalyst to pull the trigger.

Cousins-Think we sign Long? Think we up Sheard?
DW Toys

I can get behind it. Jones can take his synthetic weed habit to Arizona, Pats get a second rounder, and let Scar work with a guy with day one draft talent...

Sheard was great, but make no mistake, the Pats front 7 goes with Collins and Hightower. Those guys are the keys.

Another thing. A healthy, 100% Easley is the most disruptive pass rusher.
I agree, Collins is my favourite defensive player by a mile. Athletic freak with ball skills.

This is THE reason why he was traded.

If you look at what High, Collins and Malcolm's peers (depending on how good you think they are ) are getting it's $12-$15AAV, a signing bonus of $15-$25m and guarantees of $30-$45m for EACH player.

Even Sheard might get a $15m in guarantees deal.

Wait, there are people who are mad?

So you wanted to lose him for nothing after next year?

He's not a game changer

Yes, because football careers are short. Use them or lose them. This is typically Belichick's position as well. For instance, you can rent Akkem Ayers or Akiem Hicks for 1 year if you part with draft picks.

The important thing with draft picks is to hit on them, find good players, because 50% of the time, the picks turn into nothing. This is how Arizona fans feel about Cooper. This is not how Patriots fans feel about Chandler Jones.

Jones had four strip sacks last year, each one of them turned the game. He made big time play after big time play. He will not be replaced and the defense will be less without him.

Plus you also just traded away Gronk's BFF, if he wasn't already *****ing about being underpaid, he might start now.

They traded Jones for a guy who was benched for Ted Larsen, a guy who could not even make the Pats roster! and a late second round pick.

Bad move

Ted Larsen has been a starter in the league since he was cut by the Pats. Pretending that rookie Larsen is the same player as the one that beat out Cooper last year is laughable.

Jones did a lot well. He could set the edge as well as rush the passer. And the Pats used him in a good rotation. However, while there were times he disappeared because of double teams, there were times that he disappeared because he was asked to drop back..

Will Jones be missed? Yes. But his actions in the week leading up to the AFCCG sealed his fate.

Do the Patriots have talent that can step up? Yes. In Sheard. In Flowers. In Grissom. And possibly Rufus Johnson. Might the Patriots also look at signing Chris Long? Yep. A rotation of 4 players that ensures that Sheard or Ninkovich is on the field all the time would be very good for this team and would help off-set the loss.

10+ sacks in mostly meaningless situations

Overrated

How long have you been a Patriot fan?

What was the pass rush like prior to Chanlder? No one here is having flashbacks to the post-McGinest Patriots?

Wow, I never thought a reasonable trade would be available for Jones. But a starting G, the biggest team need, and a 2rd pick. Great move by BB.
I've been waiting for the Guard move
I've been waiting for a major cap clearing move
I've been hoping for better draft position (a Goodell finds Jesus moment of sanity ….returning NE draft picks…or this)
Thee boxes checked……..one box emptied out ( bye Jones)
Next……Butler, Collins, Hightower extensions….in that order……my ranking

PS….Now if Roger relents………..Pats to the Bowl

I like it. One of those cases where I defer a bit to Bill and the coaches regarding their assessment of Cooper, Grissom & Flowers, not to mention the fact Jones was 100% gone after this year. More $ to focus on signing the big 3 on defense, and another 2nd rounder. What's not to like.

10 sacks does not make you an elite or great pass rusher

10 sacks is better than 5. I know that. The hurries are good too. Now maybe the opposing LT isn't going to have to tackle ur guy by the neck as he hurries the QB.

But the guard has been a bust.
I never said he wasn't. I just don't think the rehetoric should focus solely on Jones being a first rounder and Cooper being a bust. If draft position gets brought up (which it did) then Cooper should be though of as a reclamation project.

I like Jones but he was third on the list behind Collins and Hightower in terms of importance. Also he never really took over games. He will be missed but he trade could turn out pretty fair.
