Chandler Jones Traded

Cooper is getting well north of 4 million this year, but is only counting 2+ against the pats' cap.

Wrong. That is not how the salary cap works.
Cooper's salary cap number was $4,629,227 with Arizona. That included a salary of $675K, a roster bonus of $1,716,954 and a signing bonus pro-ration of $2,240,273.

The signing bonus pro-ration is money that Cooper received in his rookie year. It is not money that he is being paid currently. Also, the signing bonus pro-ration stays with the team that gave him the signing bonus. That team is Arizona.

So, the Patriots will only be paying Cooper his $675K salary and the roster bonus of $1.719M.

I don't like this trade. I hate trading good players just because they are in their contract years. And I don't understand Bill's thinking on this either since he is quite willing to spend a 4th rounder on a rental.

IMO, your best pass rush guy for just one year is worth more than a 2nd rounder.

For this to work, Cooper has to become the best offensive lineman on the team. Otherwise, I don't like this at all.

All the stats show that Jones wasn't the Patriots best pass rush guy. It was, in fact, Sheard.

No, Cooper was counting 4.6m on the Cardinals cap because of his original signing bonus. That stays with Arizona. Only base salary and roster bonus counts for the Pats; that's 2.4m.

Which is what I said and was responding to - his year was pro-rated (signing bonus counted against AZ) whereas Jones wasn't because it was an option pick-up.

They got more than a second rounder they got a guy who is now the best player at what was the weakest position on the team.
Sheard is 10 times better than anyone we had at G.
I liked jones but the drop off to shears is not drastic at all and I'm not to worried about who fills in as #3 DE esp if long is signed

No you traded a 1st round player that will be too expensive for a good LG + 2nd round pick

It's irrelevant what round Jones was picked in. What is relevant is the number of sacks he brought to the team.

The question I have is this: which do you prefer, 10+ sacks for next season or a 2nd rounder + a guard who was benched for a guard the Patriots cut?

I'd take the 10+ sacks for one season.

If Cooper fits in, $ is used to lock up LBs, second rounder gets us something good...

But there are many variables there. I think defenders getting mad money this offseason is the true reason this happened.

Yeah, I didn't think a trade would happen, not because it wasn't worth exploring a trade, but because I doubted that a team would trade for Jones, knowing that they would not only be giving up assets greater than a 3rd round pick (or else why would the Patriots do it) in order to get him, but would also then would have the same issue as the Patriots: they get him for one year then have to sign him to a long-term deal or be willing to use the franchise tag. But the Cardinals figured it was worth it, I guess, and must have spoken to him about an extension or they're taking a pretty big risk.

Sheard is an upgrade at RDE. Ninkovich remains at LDE. Long will replace Sheard as the 3rd DE. Flowers will be a factor.

butler will get 10 plus million as a pro bowl #1 CB and jamie collins could have a 10 sack 100 tackle season and look to get von miller money so jones was not coming back so its a good trade in the long run but im not sure we will see the fruits of this trade this year Jones will have a 15 plus sack season with AZ so unless coopers plays great this trade will not look great untill a few years

Safe to say, this will likely be a one year deal.

Jonathan Cooper, per multiple sources, did not re-do his contract when traded to New England. He's subject to 2017 option at $11M.

Makes sense. If he's been underachieving, it's in his best interest to either force the Patriots to pick up that option, or gamble on himself to have a better year and earn more. An extension in his current state would probably be for a bargain.

10+ sacks in mostly meaningless situations

Overrated

Really hope this means that deals for Sheard, Collins, Hightower and Butler will all be more affordable.

If Cooper performs this year (as I hope he will), he'll take some of that $ to resign too, but that's a decent problem to have.

The pass rushing quartet of Sheard, Ninkovich, Long, and Flowers is going to be great.
Shepard n Ninkovich r proven:
Long first needs to make the team
Flowers needs to avoid a few DNP's before being considered 'great'

Doubt this deal happened except for a couple of things: Jones wasn't going to extend seeing the kind of money he could make next year (don't blame him) and the incident before the AFCCG.

BB doesn't like that crap at all.
