Chandler Jones Traded

This certainly gives Belichick more flexibility for this draft. He can use both twos to go up to 32, he can use a 2 and a 3 to get up inside 50, or he can trade down or use all 4 in the top 100. I won't watch Day 1 of the draft but day two will be interesting.

Ah, that probably explains the discrepancies in cap hits, too, since Jones was hitting for the entirety of his 5th year option and Cooper seems to be pro-rated, so to speak.

No. Cooper isn't pro-rated. He's only in his 4th year. The 5th year would be 2017.

Miguel says they have until May 3, and the price would be $11.9M. I'd say it's very unlikely.

Agree. If he "proves it" (as the cliche goes), he'll probably still command less than that on the open market, and for more than one year.

The 2nd rick pick is higher than the compensation pick they would have got if they kept him and he left in the off-season. Sure if makes the team weaker this season but Its not something that should stop them competing.

Cooper was just a throw in in this trade. Imo it was a fair trade and Im ok with it. What can change it though is if Pats can get the best out of Cooper. If he becomes the player that he has the potential to be (and thats a big if) then its a huge win on the trade for the Pats.

Yea I bet they would have cut him anyway.

Cooper is getting well north of 4 million this year, but is only counting 2+ against the pats' cap.

I don't like this trade. I hate trading good players just because they are in their contract years. And I don't understand Bill's thinking on this either since he is quite willing to spend a 4th rounder on a rental.

IMO, your best pass rush guy for just one year is worth more than a 2nd rounder.

For this to work, Cooper has to become the best offensive lineman on the team. Otherwise, I don't like this at all.

I think people should stop thinking that BB is pressured to move up because of the pissgate pick. That's not a good line of thinking. Just continue operations as normal.

That 5.4 mill in cap is key. They might need that for extensions.

They wouldn't cut him. He started 9 games last season was the 7th overall pick and was basically in his 2nd year since he broke his leg and spent his rookie year on IR.

What about the cap space and extra 2nd round pick?

No, Cooper was counting 4.6m on the Cardinals cap because of his original signing bonus. That stays with Arizona. Only base salary and roster bonus counts for the Pats; that's 2.4m.

If Cooper fits in, $ is used to lock up LBs, second rounder gets us something good...

But there are many variables there. I think defenders getting mad money this offseason is the true reason this happened.

I think we had to improve our interior line, Cooper should be an upgrade and another 2nd round pick is nice. Think this means we have a chance of Long coming aboard as well.
If it turns into something like Long (with the saved money)/Cooper/2nd rounder for Jones, it seems like a pretty good deal.

I like it.

cooper was the 7th over all pick for the cards back in 2013 so he has not lived up to the hype but should still be a upgrade for the pats, not happy about lossing the top pass rusher but its not like a seymore type trade the pats still have a few good pass rushers on the team hope they get one of the top RB's with that draft pick

But... Ted Larsen replaced Cooper. Larsen is a guy the Patriots cut.

Great trade. I'll miss jones. He's a nice player but dissapear a too much. I'm not even sure he's worth a 2nd

You're probably right. Maybe I'm underrating Olivier Vernon, but I just can't see Chandler Jones taking less than a guy like that.
