Chandler Jones Traded

Cooper isn't a star but he gives them a veteran guard they can start right away.

Yeah, I think that's the best way to look at Cooper. Forget his draft position and just concentrate on the fact that he can start for the Pats this year and help prevent Brady from being killed. With Brady being 39 this year, anything that keeps him protected for a year works for me.

Quick question: Cooper is a UFA next season, but can the Pats pick up his 5th year since he was a First Round pick? Or has that ship sailed?

Pretty sure they still can pick up the option as he is still signed to his rookie contract

Either way, franchising a guard is a lot cheaper than franchising a DE, but they might need that tag for Collins or Hightower.

Miguel says they have until May 3, and the price would be $11.9M. I'd say it's very unlikely.

IIRC, the fifth year option has to be exercised before the player's fourth season, so that ship has sailed. Could be wrong though.

Ah, that probably explains the discrepancies in cap hits, too, since Jones was hitting for the entirety of his 5th year option and Cooper seems to be pro-rated, so to speak.

now if the pats package picks and move up to 33 or 34 , that would be a nice middle finger to troy vincent.

I was just going to say this. The two late seconds give them around 600 points on the draft value chart, which coincidentally brings them right to #32. Please do this Bill, picking 32 would be the best FU to Goodell.

I wonder if he wants a shot at Derrick Henry? I would rather have Eliott but he will be gone.

Hmmm wonder if his little escapade this last season had any factor in this......But I think the trade is fine, as many have said he had become a streaky player. To bad, thought he was a good dude.

I may be naive but I don't think it was a huge deal.

Isn't it only guaranteed for injury? Why wouldn't you exercise it?

I didn't think it would be possible for the Pats to pull a 2nd out of this... let alone a 2nd and a player at a position of need that has a lot of potential if he can stay healthy. I like this trade. Now I hope they either sign Long or draft another pass rusher. But additional 2nd gives them the ammo to move around and this is a very deep draft for DL.

how good is Cooper? I know he went 7th in the draft but it sounds like he hasn't even been an average starter since coming into the league.

I honestly felt like Jones destiny was written when we took 2 DE-like players somewhat highly on the last draft.

G. Grisson (3rd round)
D. Flowers (4th round)

If any of then can emerge, we save A LOT of money without Jones. Like people have said:

Collins, Butler and Hightower are more important IMO

I think Rufus will get some time too next year- providing that he makes the team and is healthy.

From what I just read up-thread, there are about 12 million reasons why you wouldn't. Yikes. but then again, the kid was a 7th overall pick.

The 2nd rick pick is higher than the compensation pick they would have got if they kept him and he left in the off-season. Sure if makes the team weaker this season but Its not something that should stop them competing.

Cooper was just a throw in in this trade. Imo it was a fair trade and Im ok with it. What can change it though is if Pats can get the best out of Cooper. If he becomes the player that he has the potential to be (and thats a big if) then its a huge win on the trade for the Pats.

Yes, the Patriots have until May 3rd to pick up Cooper's option. Or they can negotiate a long term deal with him..

Good trade imo. I don't think we'll see much of a drop.

According to Miguel

Pats must decide by May 3 if they wish to pick up the option for Jonathan Cooper's 2017 season. Cooper was drafted w 7th pick in 2013 draft.

Being that it's only guaranteed for injury, the Pats can pick it up and cut him if he doesn't work out and it costs them nothing.
