Sanu has worse stats and got five years with twice the AAV, im sorry not every guy can get the veterans minimum.

Paying this kind of money to Sanu would have drawn the same reaction out of me. OVERPAYING.

Generally speaking, every free agent is going to be overpaid. The only ones that don't get overpaid are the ones that no one cares enough to get in a bidding war over. Now that doesn't mean that every free agent doesn't live up to or exceed their contracts sometimes, just that at the time of a signing it's likely they got more than their production deserves. It's the nature of the beast, and why drafting is so important, because it lessens the need to rely on FA solely for your team build.

bill obviously sees something in this guy that makes him think he will perform well in our system to give him that money and go after him. So I will give Bill benifit of the doubt.

now, if we sign Boldin, colston or another vet to round out the receivers I will be happy

I like the signing especially given the market but really wish they had addressed RB, I'm not interested in a jag RB and really hope they draft a really good back otherwise they could end up in the exact same situation they were in down the stretch this season, and that would suck.

you would have gotten mad at Sanu getting 3 years $12 million? he got almost three times that, not everyone is going to sign for the vet minimum

I don't concern myself with what other teams pay, only what we pay.

Address RB by addressing OL

Still need to get a RB that can carry it 200-250 times. Blount before he got injured was on pace to have 230 carries

Would like to see Blount back. He should come cheap. Does anyone have stats from 2014, of how often blount ran behind develin and what his #'s were vs. not running behind develin. I can't remember how often the Pats did that. Reason I ask is blount sometimes has trouble getting started, but once he had a head of steam, he's a beast. Maybe develin could help.

I dont have the numbers but in a PatsPulpit article, it said that the team ran WORSE when Develin was in there. Interestingly enough, the passing game was BETTER with him out there.

With that said I don't think Develin is a crappy lead blocker.

Patriots are Missing James Develin...in the Passing Game?

That's probably because most of the plays wtih Develin in there are runs, so you're telegraphing it's going to be a run, and the defense acts accordingly (which helps when we actually pass it and hurts when we run it)

Yep. Good chunk of short yardage plays in there too which would bring the YPC down.

I love the difference in cap philosophy highlighted by this signing.

The reason the Bills couldn't keep their up and coming RFA was because they're tight against the cap, after seriously overspending in Free Agency in the last few years, for an underperforming DL, a TE that amounted to Meh, and assorted big-name bits that played way below their salaries.

So, their homegrown kid, who was new to football when he first came into the league, but was flashing the potential to outplay a number of Buffalo's early round draft picks at WR, comes to the Patriots for his prime years. It's another case where by Week 10, fans from opposing teams will say, "how do they keep finding these guys?"

The Pats, on the other hand, spend their cap space on team depth and underappreciated players coming into their prime. And they get criticized during Free Agency for "being so passive". Doesn't seem passive to me... just seems like they have a different idea of what value looks like.

I agreed for two reasons. First because I agree with your post and second, I didn't want you to be known as the evil one. :D

Thanks for the info. That kinda makes sense. Obviously the more multiple and disguised the Pats are, the better. Passing with a fb and power rb is always good. Like the other poster said, develin/ blount was likely used in a lot of short yardage situations, lowering that ypc. Both those guys help the offense. Still would like to see a rb drafted at some point.(between the tackles type). Really hope lewis will be close to what he was. Having him healthy for playoffs is huge.

Yep. Having the threat of the running game is key.
