Patriots sign WR Chris Hogan

Wes Welker's 1 TD with the LOLphins says hi.

Agree completely, that's exactly what this signing reminds me of. I also like his size and the fact that he can play outside the hashes. I think he's an upgrade over LaFell and a good signing.

Heard the first year cap hit is at 5.5 million. Buffalo has 4.5 million cap space, so unless Buffalo decides to cut some people he'll end up here.
Either way Rex loses. He must be steamed.

Bear in mind, I'm not advocating cutting him immediately. I could only see that being the case if they don't come to terms on a restructure. Especially if there is another FA at a position of need out there that they have their eye on but can't afford right now. I would prefer that he restructures and the team keeps him. That would be a nice redundancy in place (between he and Hogan) that we didn't have in 2015 when Edelman went down.

understood, but if you're buying and selling, putting off a restructure for a couple of months helps the pats since it reduces options (or at least appears so) for the player for several reasons

BRUTAL contract especially when you consider this is pretty much the contract EMMANUEL SANDERS signed. Don't know how Belichick values these guys but I'm expecting Emmanuel Sanders-like production or bust.

IDK about this contract. An average of 4M for year seems like a lot and is just a hair under what Edelman makes, Looking at some vids at him trying to get a feel for him

His positive points are his quickness which while not lightning quick is pretty good and he seems to have good hands and body control for his size. He can play outside a bit but his straight line speed is meh.

Overall a poor man's Edelman. A player I would like to have but I think that we sign him for less than 4M a year. He looks like a 2M a year player to me.

Actually I had to take down a vid i used cause it was just a fan channel i think. However search "wired for sound Chris Hogan" on youtube and you will find it.
Im guessing they see him as a guy that fits the system and will excel at the quick passing game we all know and love.

If he can play at say Dola's level it gives them a good deal of week to week flexibility with the game plan without having to change the route tree just for this guys skill set.

Then there's the whole thing about weakening a division opponent. It's like killing two birds with one stone. Great move imo.

Emmanuel Sanders signed his contract two years ago.

He's sh***ing his pants as we speak...

(re-posted after screwing up the numbers last time...)

Let's take a guess at the contract structure.

What we know is:
3 years, $12m total
$5.5m cap hit in Year 1

Nicely front-loaded with the Year 1 roster bonus, plus an easy cut in Year 3 due to the minimal dead money from the signing bonus.

(Salary cap-wise, roster bonuses are fully assigned to the year in which they're paid, rather than being pro-rated)

Looks good to me.

Question for you and the cap guys. Normally the roster bonuses are paid early on in the league year. But does that need to be the case?

For example, could that roster bonus be paid for making the initial 53 man roster in early September?

Curious because that could offer some protection. Still counts for salary cap purposes now so the Bills can't match, but if he looks terrible in camp the Pats could cut him and only be out the $750k signing bonus. Is something like that possible if the player was willing to agree to it?

To be fair, that is exactly what a bunch of people were saying about Edelman when we had Wes Welker. The difference is that Jules played QB in college and Hogan played lacrosse. He's improved that last couple of years and may finally be "getting it". I don't think the Bills will match.
I am still hoping Boldin has something left and would get a shot. Maybe it's personal (in some cases) or too much money for a "past their prime time players". It goes both ways, before someone misunderstands me.

So BB is actually going to sign a player with an inflated cap hit in year one.

That player is a WR.

I look forward to the honks continuing to assure us all that WR is not a need position.

Lafell sucked last year and I didn't want him back. He had a very good year in 2014, but that was then. This kid has played 1 year of what div3 football and played more Corner that one year than he did WR.

The kid has room to grow and improve. His 4.47 pro day was better than Endleman, Amendoloa, and his workouts were the same as Martin although he is 30lbs heavier.

This $$$ deal is similar to what we paid for Welker 10 years ago when the cap was 1/2 what it is now.

The problem with this signing is who is the #2 WR? Amendola or Hogan or Martin? I feel like he added a body but IDK if he fits the bill for a #2. Hope so.

We are likely done in the WR market for FA with this move so i hope he can be a #2 cause I don't trust Amendola or Martin to be.

Amendola when healthy is a bonifide #3 Martin is a marginal #4 WR.

Also my guess for the offer sheet

year 1- 5,5
year 2 - 2
year 3 - 4.5

This would give the Patriots a cheaper year 2 with an option to cut in year 3 or leverage for a better deal.

Also It would allow the Patriots to lower their risk over the first 2 years slightly and with the instant money in year 1 i think he would take a lower number in year 2.
