Semi-OT: Heath Evans today out-benches every FB at the Combine

Someone alert me when they start doing bench presses on the field during a game.

I beg to differ. Watch the play before the Butler pick. On Do Your Job they talked about how Hightower, "bench pressed Okung" to get to Lynch. Fair or not but it is definitely part of the game. That's a lot of weight Hightower fought off with the game and season on the line.

His ability to make that play had more to do with a lot of other things than the ability to bench press. I'm sure Hightower is no slouch when it comes to benching 225. But when you're drafting talent, you don't necessarily want the guy with the best numbers in the weight room. There are gym rats and there are jungle cats. You want the jungle cat every time.

I've lifted since high school... So that's about 42 years of strength training.

But the thread isn't about you and I. What baffles me is someone that watches a former successful NFL player lift and then criticizes them as if they know more. All NFL players get the best of the best training and I am certain Evans had forgotten more than you know about proper form. So his form wasn't perfect for that demo, but who cares?

Are you one of those people that give random advice to people at your gym if their form is wrong? I hope not.

Now if you want to criticize people that take steroids due to deep insecurities or people that have pictures of themselves flexing as their avatar, I'm with ya!
My point was that if an out of shape fat guy like myself can do a comparable #reps as an NFL player than maybe it's not such a big deal that Evans can do 30x225...and people fawning over it is pretty lame considering lifting the way he's lifting is a sure ticket to injury... So instead of ur sanctimony perhaps if a young kid read my comment he'd think twice about using poor form on bench...or would at least look into it...especially cuz I and others lifted w that form and have suffered serious injuries... Now u keep go talking about ur 42 years of "strength training "

i'm not really surprised. bench is all about consistency and heath put years and years of hitting the gym religiously. and he is still young. many top heavy lifters are actually in late 30's and early 40's. even in arm wrestling late 30's to mid 40's seem to be the peak.

I think bench press at the combine is about as relevant to football as the straight-line 40-yard-dash in shorts and standing broad jump. Not very.

Small differences in scores are not significant from a football standpoint.

Large differences often are.

It seems half the discussion of the bench press in this thread (leaving Windsor knots aside) is overlooking something basic.

The test isn't about how many times you can bench press before tiring. It's about how many times you can bench press in 60 seconds. Yes, Evans happened to tire before the 60 seconds were up. But both the reps count and his form needed to be considered in the context of this need for speed.

Nah, I'm done. It's just a function of age, not something to brag about

Terron Beckham's combine workout with his 44 reps at 225 at the end...freak

It was a fun story to watch Heath Evans first game as a Patriot. He was like a rhino rumbling against the team that had cut him.

Then for years it was the Evans' third and short play that failed every time.

2015 ended up to be a tough year for RBs for the Pats, but they've had it worse.

Nice that Evans can lift a lot of weights, though. Maybe if his TV gig doesn't work out he can be a mover or carry boxes in a warehouse.

Combine shaming? Shame on Heath's bigotry.

For some positions bench press is pretty useless. For lineman, linebackers and fullbacks it does have some value. Hightower being able to press and shed Okung in the SB as an example.

I do agree they should stop the bouncing and lifting of their asses to make it a truer bench mark.

I'm shocked...a man of your caliber hanging around strip clubs...
