Steph Stradley: Why Pats Should Get Picks Back

Spygate was like getting the death penalty for the crime of wearing white after labor day and there are morons out there arguing that it wasn't enough? Pretty sad to see how toxic football has become.
The saddest part is owners really do believe it wasn't enough. Do they pay attention at all on what is going on in their organization and on the field?

Hey guys, me and Steph tweeted back and forth a couple times a while back. We are practically best buddies. I could put a good word in.
Hate to see it but, she's not your buddy, guy.

A majority of the NFL owners are beneficiaries of family wealth that have really never worked an honest day in their lives. IMO because of that, they are a collection of entitled brats who think championships miraculously appear and hard work isn't a reason why they happen. They are THANKSDAD

Then you have those that have earned their own money that are so competitive that they think they can buy their way out of suckiness and are have egos so big it can't possibly be their shortcomings that contribute to losing. That group is SPOILEDBRAT

Arizona Cardinals Bill Bidwill 1972- THANKSDAD

Pretty interesting...

You overlook the fact that one of the main advantages of drafting well is that you get players on cap friendly rookie contracts. (Consider what Malcolm Brown's value would be as a free agent, versus what he cost.) Any team that wants to "free up $$" can simply pass on their pick when they are called. Because you have more money but fewer quality players, it is a bit misleading to suggest (not necessarily intentionally) that the loss of draft picks is somehow advantageous.

I agree just trying to make the best out of a bad situation

Most people agree it's crap but the consensus is that it is back punishment for Spygate. See the ridiculous BSPN article from last year.

By most people I mean fans from other teams.
I don't understand that line of thinking. First of all, Spygate was not all that egregious for many reasons that have been discussed in these and other forums. Second, the Patriots were already hit with a hefty penalty for that, loss of a first round draft choice. Why the feeling that the Pats got away with something?

Doesn't make sense knowing what we know but since goody destroyed the tapes the paranoia runs wild.

Because they had the audacity to keep on winning after they were "punished". If they had fallen back to the pack, or even better fallen apart, then the punishment would be have been deemed sufficient.

This is the perfect summary and take down of the NFL's deflategate fiasco. I know its probably all for naught, but I still like that there is a growing opinion that it is all crap.

It would appear that Steph Stradley has a soul mate at UPI. Ira Miller calling for Goodell to wake up is refreshing. Saying that Goodell is lucky that he screwed over Robert Kraft and not the late great Al Davis, Miller points out just how hopeless it is for the NFL in appeals court next week.

The clock is ticking on Goodell making a graceful exit.

Ira Miller: It would be appelaing for Roger Goodell to end Deflategate saga

That is an excellent summary of the 2 groups of NYJFL owners. The THANKSDADs and SPOILEDBRATs do share one common trait. Neither group could give a rat's ass about the fans, the players, or the game itself. The only thing that this group of billionaire bloodleaches cares about is milking every last penny out of their investments

Yep. Its my opinion only based on what I've read about them and what other fans say about them.

The ones left blank because IMO they seem like responsible owners who don't say or do dumb things and let the football people run the operation.

For some of these that I did add a label to I might have been too harsh on Pitt, AZ, ATL DEN and NYG (dislike Mara but thats my bias)

This is the point I always wonder about. Not to go back and revisit all of Spygate, but really....

- The Jets taped the Patriots the year before.
- It was well-known that the Patriots taped - coaches were seen looking at the camera and waving. Clearly this wasn't a clandestine operation going on. As BB said in a presser last year, they were doing it openly in front of 80,000 people, not hiding anything.
- They violated a memo about where they can tape from.
- They immediately turned over everything they had - full cooperation from the team.

And for that, they were hit with a million dollars in fines, and the loss of a 1st round pick. At the time, the heftiest penalty in NFL history. How is that "getting off light"?

Excellent summary.
We know that the reason it was over the top is because Bob Kraft's supposed 31 buddies in their irrational hearts believe that somehow, some way the Pats had done somethings far more devious with video that was and remains unproven and unsubstantiated, but they believe it wholeheartedly and they believe that the imagined chicanery resulted in the Pats winning and their teams losing.

The fact that Kraft remained seemingly oblivious to this for almost a decade since speaks to his utter lack of awareness and perception in a key area affecting his franchise.

...and it was a freaking memo from Emperor ****head that violated Article 9 of the NFL Bylaws and Game Day Ops manual which requires any changes to rules specific to game day MUST be approved by the NFL Competition Committee.

Another case of the arrogance of Goody and his brand of industrial justice.

Because well-known Patriot lover Roger Goodell destroyed the tapes (after showing them to everyone but you know, facts) and those tapes clearly showed that Belichick was the grassy knoll shooter. The grassy knoll was where he kept the Lindburgh baby hidden forcing it to draw up plans for 9/11 on behalf of his gay ISIS overlords.

I actually think the ESPN hit piece last September had some good insight on that. First, there had already been a reputation that the Patriots were "pushing the rules" - which would be very consistent with the actions of an old-school coach like Belichick who grew up under Parcells, was friends with Jimmy Johnson and others.

From there, we know how anal Belichick is. The article mentioned something like 50 tapes that were handed over. Goodell destroyed them because he knew the sheer volume of them would get the owners up in arms -- even though they're the same exact thing. Frankly, I'm stunned there weren't 155 tapes (the sum of all regular, preseason, and post-season games under Belichick to that point). Of course, being Goodell, he made the wrong decision and it completely backfired and set up this reputation that he hid much more nefarious things that the Patriots did.

Agree with your comment on Kraft.

Plus BB and Kraft had to apologize to the owners. And if I recall correctly, the owners that were interviewed after indicated that they felt BB was sincere.

The whole idea that Spygate wasn't penalized enough is just another excuse to bash the Pats.
