Welker: Super Bowl 50 probably made him sick.

how people forget...
I don't forget how great Welker was and when Edelman started playing, I only hoped he could fill Welkers shoes.

He's done that and much more. We are just plain spoiled.

....anybody who blames TB12 for that drop needs to stare at the pic on the left and seriously reconsider their position.
I'm one of those people and will be until I die. One of the most accurate QBs ever and a wide open receiver... and WW has to twist and contort his body in the opposite direction he was going just to get his hands on the ball, but drops it.. yet Brady deserves no blame? Sorry I disagree.

I don't know if it was an inaccurate throw or simply a miscommunication. Welker fully expected a pass to his right shoulder while Brady threw it to his left. I'm pretty convinced that if Welker had expected a pass to his left shoulder the pass would've been an easy completion. Welker had to twist his body and jump up because he was looking over his right shoulder, had he looked over his left instead he could caught it without breaking a sweat.

I can totally agree with that.

Brady threw the pass exactly were he was supposed, over the corner and to the back shoulder (i.e. away from the safety). Welker got BOTH hands on the ball. The first rule they teach you as a wide out in Pop Warner on up is that if you can get a HAND on the ball, you should make the catch. The only people who skirt the blame on Welker for this are people who DON'T understand football and Welker honks.

That is a WRs job. To get into position to make a catch. Was it an easy catch? No. Did he get in position to make the catch? Absolutely.

Oh teh pain of watching that video. For some reason in my memory the ball was 'less catchable' but rewatching that increases the hurt.

Logan Mankins has his own pity story too. He was drafted in 2005 so he just missed the Pats 2004 title run and then he got traded away in training camp of 2014. Talk about bad luck.
I call that the Curse of Logan Mankins.

Search it on this forum and you will see it was predicted right after he got traded that the Pats would will the SB.

I believe you but aren't the Patriots ALWAYS predicted to win the Super Bowl by this forum (particularly in the pre season)?

The people who do not understand football blame a loss on one play ...
There are many plays away from the ball that cost a team a game ...
If one play costs your team a game you don't deserve to win anyways ...

Of course Belichick alludes to this after every loss ...
but some just love to point the blame finger ... so point away.

Peyton can't see safeties.

Peyton can see Safeties. :D

Honestly, the catch appears tougher than it really is. Should've caught it. :(

Yeah, and it makes you realizes just how loaded the team was in 2012.

It's crazy to think that Brady had all these weapons...........

Gronk
Welker
Hernandez
Edelman
Lloyd
Branch
Woodhead
Vereen

...of course I know that Gronk, Edelman, and Hernadez battled injuries at different times throughout the year.

At the time I (and I'm sure others) thought 2012 was going to be a rebuilding year.
  • Leading rusher (BJGE) was gone, to be replaced by an unproven Stevan Ridley.
  • The GOAT's blind side protection (LT Matt Light) was replaced by unproven Nate Solder.
  • Brian Waters was a godsend at RG in '11, but after he left the Pats had a new C and new RG.
  • Andre Carter was gone, replaced by an unproven rookie.
  • No NFL team seemed interested in retaining a 31-year old Brandon Lloyd, who was the #1 WR.
  • A championship run with Chung and Steve Gregory at safety?

I said it at the time and I will say it again: in my opinion that 2012 New England Patriots team vastly overachieved to make it as far as they did. I will vehemently disagree with those that claim that the team somehow 'underachieved' by not winning the Super Bowl that season.

.

Wow, I'd be VERY surprised if most people felt that way.

After all, the Pats were coming off a Super Bowl appearance.

So immediately that draws high expectations.

Then take in the fact that the Pats had arguably the BEST quarterback in the league (Brady, obviously) to go with a supporting cast that established itself as possibly the best in the league. Welker was the best slot receiver, and Gronk/Hernandez established themselves as bonafide studs in 2011 and absolute matchup nightmares for defenses, but we were supposed to be concerned about hte loss of Benjarvis? Oh, and they added Lloyd who was to be a signfiicant upgrade over Branch (who was merely our fourth receiving option at best anyway).

As for the defense, the 2011 defense wasn't bad enough to keep them out of the Super Bowl, and it was only supposed to get better in 2012. Edelman wouldn't be playing corner. Two first rounders and a second rounder were spent on defense. RAS I Dowling was coming back from injury (essentially the addition of another first round, trust me, we all know how this one worked out). Gregory was an upgrade over Chung. So no, I don't think the loss of Andre Carter scared too many people. Losses happen every year. It's about who's left.

I don't know why anyone would have thought the 2012 would be a rebuidling year. After all, not many thought 2015 was a rebuilding year and we lost way more in that offseason (Revis, Browner, Ridley, Vereen, Arrington, Connolly).

The play that had an even bigger impact (IMO) was the B.S. "intentional grounding" penalty leading to a safety on the first Patriot play on offense.

Sorry, consider that Exhibit A for why one should not post comments after working 16 hours. Yes, I agree with your retrospective on the 2012 club.

I do consider the 2011 team to be over achievers to make it as far as they did, to the Super Bowl. Apparently in my sleep-deprived, one stiff drink-induced mind I was conflating the 2012 SB team and the 2012 regular season team all into one and the same.

Good catch.

It's all good. I was just shocked is all, but your response explains it all.
