NFL Offseason Cuts Thread

Nick Fairley seems to be on his way out of the Rams.

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner does not expect the team to re-sign impending free agent DT Nick Fairley.

Fairley recorded just half a sack in his first year with the Rams, but he was consistently disruptive and earned a solid grade against the run from Pro Football Focus. The Rams have several important pieces on defense including both starting corners headed to free agency, and DT Michael Brockers is entering the final year of his deal. With Los Angeles focused on other players, Wagoner believes Fairley will get a better offer somewhere else.

RB is the biggest need imo, but OL is a close second, still im not hearing anyone's sugestion on it.

Cannon sucks and Solder has a major longevity issue. So the first thing is drafting a Tackle.

the second is to upgrade the guard position. Mathis going to Denver was a major coup, he helped their running game so much this season.
Anyway, Jackson and Mason could improve for sure, but i cant stand to see Brady being eaten every other play. We need a better, proven player.

My suggestion is Alex Boone. He used to be a pro bowler, until the 49ers become a disarray of a franchise. He's 29, i bet he would be willing to come here and his price shouldnt be too high.
Sign the beast BB
I agree regarding Cannonfodder's suckiness, Solder's longevity, and drafting a LOT.

I also agree regarding Evan Mathis. Bill's inability or unwillingness to sign him after Philly released him
might very well have been the difference between the Pats and the Donkeys playing in the SB.

My suggestion for signing a UFA OLman: Kelechi Osemele. He's a 4-position stud who will be expensive to sign, but the health of TFB is at stake here, and I'm sick of watching him trying to make do with UDFA and over-drafted crap in front of him.

I think you are overrating Mathis' impact. Perhaps it was due to injury, but he was far less effective than in the previous years with the Eagles (for example in the regular season matchup against us he got destroyed on a good number of plays). Our major issues in the AFCCG were the tackles getting blown up by Ware and Miller and Kline failing to hold his ground.

BBF79, can I suggest that you send a healthy donation to Ian? Ink is expensive these days and you are using up about a year's quota in the past couple of days, just on this one topic.

I have to disagree with some of the Harvin sentiment. Percy Harvin would absolutely flourish in this offense. I believed that in the 09 Draft and still believe it today. He is a perfect target for the Patriots to pursue at WR, IMO....
  • Separates extremely well from man coverage...
That's a good point to bring up.

Personally, I believe...

Not "comparing" him to those guys, I'm comparing ....

Personally, I don't think Harvin ...

We'll just have to disagree on that. I don't think ...

All in all, I'm willing to take a chance on the guy. He's still a game breaker when he's on the field, and playing with Brady in this offense, I believe ...

…who would not have had the opportunity to fail to hold his ground if Mathis had signed here.

I just cut my finger. Owwwie.

First of all, Kline played quite well the first half of the season before he vanished towards the end. Second, Mathis plays LG exclusively, while Kline suited up at RG for us in the AFCCG. And third, it's no given that the result with Mathis would've improved the situation that much where you could say he would've been the difference-maker. In the regular season matchup against us he struggled quite a bit with Malcom Brown stuffing two running plays by blowing him up and drawing a holding penalty on a third. Chandler Jones also caused a fumble after he threw away a Mathis-block and Dominique Easley on a play pushed him four yards into the backfield right after the snap.

When has he ever been a problem?

I'm not saying that Bennett would definitely be excluded from consideration, only that it's natural for us to question whether or not coach Belichick would be actively looking for a guy who has a laundry list of behaviors that include:

--being kicked off of the team "indefinitely" as recently as 2014

--has fought his own teammates....more than once

--has held out for more money after signing a new deal only 1-2 years prior

--was caught on the cameras of "Hard Knocks" rolling his eyes at the head coach, while also mocking other coaches and players with hand gestures---and that was his ROOKIE season

--openly complained while at Texas A&M about their run first offense

--has had "songs" that he's made up about his teammates and coaches taken down off of youtube because they're so derogatory

--can never keep his big mouth shut + always has something negative to say about opposing players and coaches (see Russell Wilson, Jimmy Graham, HC Jason Garrett as examples)

--openly brags about the fact that he's gotten kicked out of IHOPs all over the globe

--is one of the most arrogant players in the entire NFL, and has mentioned his "pride" in the fact that he doesn't have any friends

--has been fined by both the NFL and Cowboys for his remarks about gay people

--had to be talked out of quitting....multiple times, during his career

--has littered the web with nude pics of himself

--claimed that he just wasn't "feeling the love" from Dallas...or the NY Giants...or the Chicago Bears. Perhaps that is coincidental? (eyeroll)

I wonder how much Kline's injury factored into the equation, because I definitely agree that he looked alright in the first half and bad in the second.

His versatility and experience in our assignments would justify keeping him, even if that's for a rotational player in a lesser role.

I'm not sold on Kline as a starter but as a backup he is fine. There were a couple of games in which it seemed someone was taking a saw to his shoulder as he looked to be in severe pain.

Great idea, get rid of Amendola, who is a hard worker who plays through injuries, knows the offense, and has made all sorts of clutch catches for them and bring in Percy Harvin, who is a one trick pony who never plays through injury and gets run out of every town he plays I'm. They should replace Brady with Johnny Manziel while they are at it.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. Harvin hasn't done **** for years, he's an absolute jerk, he sits out practices, punches teammates, accuses them of "not being black enough", oh and be doesn't block or run routes well! All these fantasy football players in here don't realize that he's not at all worth it.

Wow, talk about overblown?

Bennett was suspended for a few days of practice for next to nothing, a practice fight that lasted about 3 seconds, if anything all that proved is that Trestman never should have been a head coach.

Rolling his eyes and making up songs about teammates? He made a song about Capn Crunch too, he should be suspended.

Saying Jimmy Graham doesn't block? Its true, he doesn't block.

Seriously Sup I can go down that entire list and there isn't a serious charge in it. He doesn't beat women and he has never been in trouble with the law, and if practice fights and rolling his eyes is as good as you can do then you have no argument. Steve Smith was far worsen and everyone here would have taken him in a heartbeat. Bennett wants the ball and wants to win, if he can't handle being the 2 TE then don't bring him in but acting like he's a bad guy for being fiery and having a sense of humor is ridiculous. However you are as entitled to your standards as anyone else but its going to be pretty hard maintaining them when looking at other players, hopefully none have ever rolled their eyes.

Here's what confuses me here--Bennett is the top tight end on the market and he's gonna want to get paid. Why are we even entertaining the thought of signing him? He's not going to sign to be a backup tight end.

He's an irritating personality that Belichick would probably not want to put up with, but that's neither here nor there because he's not signing to play second fiddle.

Bennett did himself no favors for a new contract with his lackluster play/effort here in Chicago in 2015.

Some of that was lack of viable weapons around him, due to the team getting decimated by injuries to the receiver position, but one can not discount the games where journeyman Zach Miller looked like the best tight end on the roster... not Bennett.

I don't think you are confused at all; actually, spot on with your assessment.

If you don't think that these are traits that would not only turn Belichick off, but basically point to the "anti-Patriot way," then I don't know what else to say.

You can attempt to minimize the fact that he does everything opposite of what we look for in terms of keeping your mouth shut, being a good locker room leader, staying humble, developing good chemistry with coaches and players, not complaining, not holding out, etc, but most people know what Martellus Bennett brings to their team. If you think someone like him would make sense, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Not sure why you would single out "rolling his eyes," as you obviously get the general idea of what he's about. When a rookie comes in and openly mocks his coaches and teammates with hand gestures, schoolgirl giggling, and multiple obvious eye rolls in front of the HBO cameras, it's generally not seen as a positive. Considering the fact that he's going on his 4th team now and that no one has wanted to put up with his ********, I think it's safe to say that I may be onto something....

Captain, I have to agree with you. Let's whittle it down in the playoff game to sacks and pressures. One or two less sacks and/or pressures and we win. It is that simple. Third stringers and UDFA back-ups against Ware, Miller, Wolfe and Jackson? Just one less pressure or sack wins it. There are too many DE/Rushers in the League with speed and quickness to not upgrade. This will not cure itself in 2016. I expect that you can give a pass to Jackson and Mason as Rookies.

I also don't understand why Stork was starting the last few games of the season. Andrews was playing at a high level and we were undefeated. I did not see a great upgrade in Stork. If anything a downgrade.

Volmer is adequate at RT but that is all. Cannon (who I had great hopes for) is not an NFL player, nor is Kline or Flemming who we resigned after cutting him. So Solder comes back. He is O.K. but no where near as good as Matt Light who we all criticized.

We need talent. There is more OL talent in the FA than WR which is another need. That is why I say as I did before Kelvin Beachum is an outstanding young talent with quickness who because of injury last year should be reasonable.

I think you need a Vet in the middle of the O=Line (think Waters) to direct traffic inside. Osemele would be great but a bidding war participant in FA. I would rather roll the dice with Jahri Evans for two years as a rotation Guard and tutor. He is a class act if I read it right. Had a down year but so did the Saints team.

My surprise pick would be Stefen Wisniewski, FA via Jaguars. He made a big difference in the Jags O-line. He is reasonable money and still young. Big factor is he can play Guard and Center. Worse case scenario is an upgrade on Stork.

Just one or two plays and the Patriots are beating Cam in the SB. Does Evan Mathis make just one block in that game to allow Brady a big play? Incognito?

The Draft is great but look at the nine (9) first round picks of OT the last two years. Only one has been decent and he switched to Guard. Scar or not, do you want to count on a Draft pick to be your O-Line upgrade year one in their career? ....I didn't think so. Back up Draft pick only please.

Two TE sets might be the Broncos Achilles as well. The DEs have to play wider and with a guy say...Coby Fleener or even a Bennett! with Gronk, you open up the consideration that your DEs have to spend a split second more to chip or try.

DW Toys

I had no idea of any of Bennets antics but any one of them would be a disqualifier for BB.

Was reading Management Secrets of the NEP (great book, incredible author) and in 03 I believe he kicked someone off the team for throwing hot water on a roommate as a prank, no way he would put up any of this blatant ****.
