Peter King: Why NFL Should Give Back Picks to Pats (But Won’t)

0.02 psi, not 2 psi

11.32 vs. 11.30

with an error bar in the measurement of plus/minus 0.4!

Oops! typo ... But yes. That's the point. It's one thing to stick a needle in and let a bit of air out, but to let out a little bit with absolute uniformity? Give me a break!

To this day, I cannot understand why Brady calling Jastremski so much after he found out that the League were investigating him means anything. Sure a guilty man would have phone activity like that, but so would an innocent man. It proves nothing. It suggests not much more. I don't get why people harp on it.

If I was Brady and I found out during a radio interview that I was accused of cheating, the first thing I would do when I got off the air would to be to call everyone to find out what the hell is going on and whether anyone did anything that I didn't know about.

Yes. That's why the McNally/Jastremski/Brady testimony should be made public. I'm sure they said exactly that -- "Do you know what's behind this?" "No, do you?"

Wasn't it also the first time Jastremski had prepared balls for the Super Bowl? He had to prepare 100 of them. That might have been cause for some discussion.

If you start with the assumption that the Patriots probably did something, then these facts all look suspicious and only confirm your assumptions:

- The "deflator" text - what ELSE could it possibly refer to? Weight loss? Uh, yeah, sure.
- The rapid increase in communication between Brady and Jastremski immediately following Brady's D&C interview.
- McNally entering the bathroom with the footballs.
- The fact that the Patriots' footballs were deflated by more than the Colts' footballs were.
- Brady "destroying" his cell phone.
- Brady's shaky press conference.
- The Patriots refusing to allow ANOTHER interview with Jastremski and McNally.

Of course, if you start with the assumption that nothing happened, each of these things can be seen totally innocently as well. And, of course, the science tells us that nothing happened, and we KNOW that the NFL was on a witch hunt here.

There's one confirmed violation of rules -- McNally taking the footballs without making sure the league knew where he was going with them.

I'm OK with a fine for that.
The Colts equipment guy sticking a needle in the game ball was a violation and should have made everything that took place after it irrelevant.

King as his faults, but hes still a big national writer, maybe the biggest in football.

It's refreshing to see a national guy come out and write that.

Until he comes out and writes a hackjob with a ton of incorrect info. King changes like the wind.

As for the article? The Pats aren't getting their picks back. That's a pipe dream. Kraft isn't going to go public and try to force the issue nor is the NFL going to admit that it was wrong. It's a moot point.

The only way the pats get the picks back is if the owners force goodell to, which they won't, because they are the ones who orchestrated the whole scandal

I think it would be more suspicious if there was no increase in communication between Brady and Jastremski after this story broke. Let's say Brady had been directing a ball deflation scheme. When an investigation started, why would he call his accomplices more, knowing that they were "being watched?" If they were guilty, they'd try to avoid doing things that would attract attention.

To frame this in a way that Peter King understand, remember Cris Carter's "fall guy" speech at the rookie symposium? Robert Klemko, one of King's reporters, was there and was told not to mention it by a league representative. When the "fall guy" comments became a story, did King and Klemko talk more than normal about that topic and their coverage of it? Would King think those extended conversations were suspicious? Or were they a normal reaction to the situation?

To be honest, I'm pretty sick of the radio silence from McNally. If the dude never did anything, then why isn't he on TV saying it.

He has bosses too.

Kraft should be all over Goodell and the league for not conducting a thorough game ball inspection test this season. A few random tests isn't enough when you take away draft picks and fine the team a million dollars. I am sure they figured out after a few tests the ideal gas law is real and continuing to collect data would hurt their case.

Also, I thought King was all over the place in this article. It doesn't make sense to fine the team and then give back the draft picks. You are either guilty or innocent.

And the first time King gets any type of airtime, TV or Radio for a non Patriots audience he will say the exact opposite. He is simply changing his tune cuz of the overwhelming evidence (or non evidence) that says the Pats never deflated the balls. And he is trying not to look to dumb due to his anti, jump on the bandwagon Pats cheated mantra many in the media took cuz they were in the back pocket of the NFL front office or just to stupid to look at the facts and come up with their own opinion. Don't by this hack article for a second.

When can we expect the appeals court to rule?
In their own good time. It could take months. Not out of the question that the 2016 season will already have started.

Yeah, that's pretty much a textbook case of "circumstantial evidence," isn't it?

I haven't read Peter King in a long time because I think he's an idiot. I was psyched to see him argue for the pics to be returned, but after reading his article, I wanted to punch him in the face. Is he trying to be disingenuously fair or is he really that flipping stupid?

The science is shaky? The NFL needs to learn what happens to balls when the temp changes? There's an MIT professor who he has even met that has explained it. This would be like an MIT professor explaining an algebra problem and King responding, "Interesting points, but we need to to do more research on this." How can he be so obtuse?

Brady calling Jastremski is suspicious? Really? Hmmm... Is it really hard to understand why he would want to talk to the ball manager after being accused of manipulating the balls? Goodell even lied and said it was suspicious that Brady didn't talk to him about the balls. So which is it? It's suspicious that he did talk to him about the balls or suspicious that he didn't talk to him about the balls? The NFL made both arguments which is all you really need to know about how unfair this was.

McNally disappeared with the balls? Disappeared, really? The game was delayed, the Seahawks/Packers game suddenly ended, a couple of refs said something like, "let's go", McNally, a huge guy, picked up two huge duffle bags, and walked through a room crowded with refs and league officials. Sneaky, sneaky.

Ahhhhhh image.gif

That would be in three months...pretty much lightening speed. It could be a lot longer, depending on the other cases under review. I mean some of them might actually be serious matters regarding whether people go to, stay in or get out of prison.
