One can assume that Lewis may take 50-60 percent of the reps, thus making a big spending a bit of an unnecessary exercise.

That's a pretty aggressive Assumption, my friend. ;)

It's certainly within the Realm of Possibility that he'll do so...

01 ~ If he returns to his previous Form 9 months after Injury.
02 ~ If he doesn't lose another chunk of Time to Injury.
03 ~ If Coach Belichick sees fit to deploy'm thus.

Even so: I heartily agree with your Conclusion.

Big Spending is virtually never necessary.

Joique Bell was and remains one of my first SuperBinkies.

He took about 10 Minutes to run the 40 before the 2010 Draft, and his Stock plummeted.

He's a bit beat up, and his Production plummeted, last Year.

But if he's fully healthy going forward, and deployed as part of a Rotation, which I personally consider the smartest way to do things and which happens to be the way the Patriots do things, I would not be even remotely surprised to see him give us 2 outstanding Years as Runner, Receiver, and Blocker.

He'll be 30 this Year, same as Forte, which makes for an interesting comparison. :D

And Age is not the only Factor in how quickly HalfBacks fade: Mileage Matters.

My Man Bell is of course not as talented as Forte, but I'll say it again as I said it in 2010, when he went UFA before bouncing around something like 8 Teams's Practice Squads before somebody finally wised up and gave'm the FootBall: He brings a tremendous combination of Power, Agility, and Field Vision to the BattleField. He'll consistently Move The Chains and he'll pick up Chunk Yardage.

He was underrated then, and he's underrated now.

And he'll probably come Dirt Cheap.

Sign The Beast. :D

nice....sounds like he'll be underrated in retirement, too

the only good news is that he wouldn't figure into UFA compensation

My FA RB rankings of who I'd want the Pats to get

1. Doug Martin (not gonna happen)
2. Matt Forte
3. Lamar Miller
4. Chris Ivory
5. Re-Sign Blount
6. CJ Anderson
7. Ronnie Hillman
8. Alfred Morris
9. Re-Sign Ridley
10. James Starks

Bell doesn't even crack the top 10

Don't misunderstand me. I want Forte as well. I'm not saying I'd rather have Bell (or Morris) over anyone on the top 2/3 or your list. What I'm saying is that if Forte gets expensive, it's more likely the Pats will do what they always do and look for value over talent.

It was only a year ago that the running game with Blount was good enough to win a championship behind a line that could actually run block and pass protect. I don't believe the Pats will dish out big dollars (I believe Forte will cost more to lock up than people think) to upgrade at this position until the line issues are managed.

That leaves them looking for a guy who can pass protect and run between the tackles for 60-70 yards a game without putting it on the ground. I think Blount will be back in this role whether we like it or not.

Now that would be a dream come true... Get a couple good years out of Forte and develop Williams... Williams is awesome too, for a relatively "big" back he has some seriously nasty moves.

Edit: You liked Alex Collins too I think right? Talk about the nasty moves there, though I think Williams might be a better fit.

I like both of those Razorback RB's. Williams might be the safer of the two (I used to disagree with @manxman2601 on this but, the more I watch of him, the more I like) due to the fact that Collins has fumbling issues. But Collins is more explosive than people give him credit for. If the Pats are confident they can coach him to carry the football high and tight, I would welcome him with open arms as well.

Good discussion guys. Collins was the first guy I latched on to when I started my 'scouting'. Still like him as a mid-round power back to replace Blount, fumbles excepted. But Williams is the guy for me. His balance is top notch whilst at the same time running with power just like Collins. Collins is good but is who he is now whereas I do think Williams is a 3 down back with the upside of a top 5 NFL back. I wouldn't be disappointed by Collins though, he's still someone I like.

One thing I've noticed as the combine has been brought up. Ridley, Bolden, Vereen and Blount all have sub 7.00 3-cones. Might be something worth keeping an eye on at the combine re RBs.

BTW, I wouldn't rule out Kenneth Dixon. His tape doesn't wow me at all but aside from Elliott, Dixon might be the most complete back in the draft. Does everything well and is a very good receiver out of the backfield. Has used up a lot of his mileage though and probably fits the White/Lewis mouldy rather than that of an inside runner.

But will Miller come at a higher price than Forte?

Either way 1 of those two will be overpaid IMO

Add Rainey and Powell to that list....there's probably a few more

3.9
3.9
3.5

And people are talking about him replacing LGB, who managed 4.3 despite running behind the same OL that led to

3.4 (Iosefa)
3.3 (Bolden)
2.5 (White)
2.4 (Jackson)

Our definition of "big money" is apparently different as well as Imo Big Money is 8-10 plus a season and a 40 million plus deal, not 3 years for 13-15 million. For a top producing player it's as affordable as it gets.

You made this argument last offseason in terms of keeping Vereen, but it doesn't seem like Belichick views 4-5m dollars a year as "big money." He sees it as ridiculous money. The situation with Danny Woodhead is another example, and that was for far less.

I fully agree with you that they should consider paying someone 4-5m dollars at the position of RB, but there's nothing from the past patterns that give much hope that will happen.

He likes his RBBC system, and tends to spread the depth and cost around, but that didn't work out too well last year due to injuries and an ineffective OL. It will be interesting to see if he switches things up after hopefully learning a lesson.

Pointing & Laughing at you isn't "material".

It's just Pointing & Laughing.

It's not pointing and laughing ..... It's typing drivel into a text box ......you need to get out there....save yourself

Thats quite an assumption. I love Dion but you are banking on a little guy coming off an acl with a grand total of 85 carries over 5 years to carry the load?

Well, I didn't consider 1/2 of the reps to quite be considered a bell cow style of RB, actually the opposite of that. We certainly saw him doing that on a consistent basis until he became injured. He was an obvious difference maker in both the run + pass game.

The point is that Belichick may/may not view the position of RB as a "must need" in terms of signing one of the types of backs that some here are suggesting, particularly since he believes in a RBBC system. If your argument is that we need a different RB to take over Lewis' 50 percent reps, then that's something that I can appreciate. Either way, our top RB isn't likely to be seeing more than 1/2 of the snaps on a team that utilizes the passing game as their bread and butter.
