Jerod Mayo Retiring as a Patriot.

Mayo had a Derrick-Rose type career. Shame injuries sapped his ability.

Rookie Mayo vs. the Jets on TNF (Cassel's epic comeback coming up short in OT) is still one of the greatest games played at ILB I've ever seen.

Truthfully, it was the high point of his career. I know BB thought highly of him--thats all i need to know--but he never really jumped off the screen like Hightower, Collins, and at times Spikes.

Class man ... had a nice career.
Horrible injuries ... hopefully his body heals to enjoy life away from football.

Read between the lines ... it doesn't say the NFL ... it says as a Patriot.
I must be blind because i don't see the word retirement in the message at all. i thought he was cut? the thread title says retiring but mayos message doesn't say anything about retiring.

Honorable for a player to walk away from the team on his terms ... that's how I read it.

I'm confused as well. Some sites are saying he's just announcing his leaving from the Pats, and other sites, like NFL.com, say he's announcing the end of his playing career.

if its true its very honorable. maybe the author of the thread is assuming he's retiring because nothing in mayos statement suggests retiring to me.

The first "comment" on the post by JM says "RETIRING AS A PATRIOT"

It's a little strange that it's not a more obvious statement

Most news sites are announcing it as a retirement but it's not official.

Extra Mayo at his peak was an outstanding, intelligent, dedicated player and a tackling beast. Jerod was an outstanding rep, leader and example of everything great about the patriots. I wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward. One of the unquestionable top "good guys" in the league.

Didn't we just lose our LB coach? Could Mayo possibly transition into a coaching role instead? He has always been an intelligent player, he could be great as our LB coach.

I know the op didn't mean any disrespect to Mayo but can a mod change the thread title to retires?

Thanks, I read Mike Loyko's tweet (in which he wrote cut or released), and the image doesn't say "RETIRING A PATRIOT" unless you view the entire post on Instagram.

NFL careers are short

On a side note. I'm starting to think concussion awareness, players knowing their bodies and managing finances correctly is starting to get through to some of these guys based on the recent surge of early players walking away.

It makes a lot of sense for those players that were lucky/gifted enough to get around the pro-bowl honeypot.

They usually get a big payday at the latest when they signed their second contract some of the old CBA players already got it in their rookie contract. Unless they were stupid about their finances (like you said) they already have more money than they could rationally spend in their lifetime plus a great physical condition that will make it possible to enjoy those remaining 40-50 years of their life.

The ones that always verge players and have to fight hard for every contract are the ones that don't really have that luxury to walk away knowing they are taken care of. Unfortunately this is the majority of players.
