When Mayo's option bonus is not picked up, we will be about $12M under the cap.

The patriots are NOT a team that goes after major free agents very often at all.

The team could certainly make lots of minor re-signings and signings within that $12M.

And yes, there are lots and lots of restructures and extensions, most of which add to the money available.

BOTTOM LINE
Yes, we want to upgrade lots of players. Cannon, Fleming, LaFell and Chandler are mentioned most often.
We can certainly afford to wait to cut until the replacement is in place and, perhaps even shown something in camp.

What would the cap implications be if we had that first round pick? Is it possible we make a bit of a splash in free agency, more than BB usually would, with the money we would have spent on that pick?

That's going to bum a lot of posters out. They love cutting people.

While I think this will be BB's approach, as usual, I think the Pats could benefit of doing this kind of business just like they did in the coaching department. A little bit faster than the norm. I mean why wait to cut a player that is not part of their plan?

The Pats in recent off seasons played like an outsider, waited for the first days of euphoria to then make their moves. I think Danny Amendola and Revis deals were the most recent big signings the Patriots did in the FA.

While there is no need to do anything different this year, I expect (hope) the Pats to act a little bit more aggressive in the free agency since we dont have a first round pick and there is some glaring needs like RB and Left Guard. The Pats usually do well shopping in the 3rd tier of talent in the FA basket, this year I hope they get rid of Mayo's contract, do some other moves and go to the FA in a good cap situation to get Matt Forte and a guard. That would be enough to go comfortable to the draft and draft BPA because the major needs were already filled.

1) Mayo's situation will be resolved before March 9th; there is no choice.

2) No additional cuts are needed in order to sign a RB and a LG. However, if money is needed for a LG, then Cannon can certainly be cut.

Based upon last years rookie salary slotting, our stolen 1st round pick would have been paid about $7.5 million for 4 years. That's not a lot of money to spend for free agents, which is of course why you like to keep draft picks and not have them stolen by the NFL.

last years estimates:

2015 NFL Draft 1st Round Rookie Salary Projections

12 million plus no first round pick and only a hand full of ST players are there own FA's and none of the Elite FA's will even hit the market so 12 million is more then a nuff to go after Matt Forte or Alford Morris and a few vets who get cut later on
