Akiem Hicks market just got set

I know Easley finished off on IR (again) but from all reports, his injury wasnt considered that serious. We were just in a dire situation and were running out of bodies to play. We needed the roster spot.

Easley was a force on passing downs this year. There is reason to be highly optimistic with him. Getting that type of pass rush up the middle is like gold in todays NFL.

Totally agree. That burst up the middle of the DL is gold. It can mask deficiencies in other areas of the D/opens up the outside guys to hurry the QB (a consistent hurrying of the QB is the platinum standard). It appeared to me our pass rush in the first half of the season was fierce while the second half it was good. Was the loss of Easley the biggest factor (above some LB injuries?) in the lesser production? It is post hoc ergo propter hoc to assume so, however, I suspect it is the case.

I think Seal played less than 100% last year. He had foot/leg surgery in the offseason and seemed like he just didn't have that burst like he did in 2013 and a little bit of 2014.

With that said I think Hicks is a superior talent and player

True but let me ask you this: is he 4m a year vs Siliga's 1m a year better (assumption SS makes about that)?

keeping in mind that 3m savings may be used to sign player(s) who provide important snaps and important depth for the certainty of games missed to injury.

Branch clearly outplayed Hicks this season, judging by the fact that he was the starter in 18/19 games, and was paired with Brown where he saw much more time than Hicks did.

It's cool to think that Hicks is a nice piece to have moving forward as a rotational player and even someone who can step in and start in a pinch, but I think we're throwing the word "priority" out a little too loosely here.

I think even "loosely" doesn't quite accurately sum up the usage of "priority".

Don't get me wrong as I thought Hicks was a nice part of the rotation and if the value is right I'm for keeping him. But if a defensive "priority" is signing Hicks at 4m a year then we are either in absurdly fantastic shape on D or our 'top 5' defense is equivalent to the fluttering glimpse of a patch of palm trees to an extremely parched desert wanderer.

Exactly. For me, this is the million dollar question. It's all about the value--as usual.

Siliga at 1m dollars (approx. guess) vs. Hicks at a much higher rate. Thankfully, we have a pretty decent coach and GM who is well versed at making these types of decisions.

It's a great question. Not sure I know. I think provided health, a full off season and year in this system Hicks will be a very good player and provide an excellent pass rush from the middle.

Is he $4m/yr? Maybe. That's the going rate for a decent DT who can stop the run and rush the passer

Pats have 10 picks this year so there is a great opportunity to pick up cheap depth.

Don't get me wrong, I think Hicks played great for us and would love to get him back at the right price. But it's important to remember that we got him on the cheap in a trade for Hooman because he was considered a bust in New Orleans. Teams looking to sign him have to ask themselves the age old question: which is the real Akiem Hicks: the one who was a major disappointment in NO or the one in a contract year in New England. It may lower his asking price because teams looking at his New Orleans tape are not going to be impressed.

Give me Hicks at 3.5/year with incentives to reach 4m. 2 year deal.

I think Hicks has the potential to out-perform that contract which would in-turn make it great value.

Ok Grid (and BT), I have read very extensively on the logical fallacies in latin. Either that or I had just watched the Big Bang Theory. Sheldon just arrived home from six months at the North Pole and called his religious mom. She says to him 'I prayed for you to come home safe. So you came home safe'. Sheldon says "Your prayer had nothing to do with my safe return. That kind of thinking is post hoc ergo propter hoc". To which she replied "are you sassing me in Eskimo talk?"

Now Grid would you prefer "Ego numquam pronunciare mendacium, sed ego sum homo indomitus"? :)

Yeah, sure, Pal. Sounds good to me. ;)

Eiger Sanction.

Sounds good to me, it would also play in his favor to hit the market still in a good age and probably looking for DT starter money.

I think the Pats should do an extra effort trying to keep him, while you don't break the bank for Hicks, losing him turns DT another position the Pats should address in the off season and that changes the picture a little bit.

Yeah, sure, Pal. Sounds good to me. ;)

Eiger Sanction.

Eiger Sanction is a good movie. Love the thick skulled agency lackey character who is tasked with following Clint but Clint keeps giving 'em a wallop.

Ah.

That
line.

Phenomenal Choice, Brother Straggler!!

Yeah. Eiger Sanction was great in so many ways.

I'm an huge Fan of Meyer.

All this sounds fine.

However, it still seems to me that Hicks will get a better offer from another team or two or three.
