OT-ish: Single concussion may triple risk of suicide

Sigh....You do have a point. From memory I can tell you when my concussions took place by age

5th Grade Pop Warner: I was on defense and I got kicked in the head
6th Grade Hockey: slipped and head hit the goal post
8th Grade Basketball: dove for a ball and my head hit the other kids head
11th Grade Baseaball & sand lot football; 90mph fastball to the head. (kid got drafted by the White Sox) and got leveled on a tackle and hit my head on a rock.
College: Fight/baseball bat (he got his later)
Car accident a few years ago.

With that said I'm 44 and feel great. No violence issues or moody behavior and believe me- with all the discussion about CTE I have asked.

Thats me personally. Would my folks/me do things differently knowing what we know now?

Would I sue? No. I don't think I have a case really.

Sports was a huge part of my social life and my identity as a person back then. Not sure what else I would do?
And that's why I haven't been AS sympathetic as I perhaps should be with the former players, because I can see a lot of people taking the paycheck anyway. But what got me most fired up thinking about it was the susceptibility to even more serious injury after the initial concussion.

I would still have played sports without a doubt knowing what I know now, but with that added information we would all have been prevented from exposure to the potential (or I'm sure in a lot of cases actual) more serious injuries that came from the collisions/hits subsequent to the concussion.

Yep. According to the BU study consistent sub-concussive events are just as much of a contributor to CTE as regular concussions .

The information is now out there for players make better decisions about their well being. In terms of sympathy for those players that still choose to play? Not sure I have a lot as they are making a choice. Tough issue

On a tackle in high school, "the lights went out" for a couple of seconds. Might not be called a concussion, but would would that be called?

...ummmm...a concussion.

...ummmm...a concussion.

Yea I think that might fall under a Grade 1 or Grade 2 concussion but who knows how he felt the 15 or 30 minutes after the hit.

I think the question is the concern around subconcussive trauma and how it contributes to CTE. For example, if your helmet hits another helmet at full force at you see stars for a few seconds, but do not have any symptoms of a concussion is that subconcussive trauma?

Seems to me that it is.

I agree.
I watched a couple episodes of Friday Night Tykes on netflix. It amazes me what our kids are going through even AFTER all this CTE awareness.

Concussion experts say that children under the age of 18 should not play sports in which consistent subconcussive trauma is part of the game. Football falls in this catagory. Hockey as well but not as much.
