Akiem Hicks market just got set

Wow, they way overpaid that guy..

Hmm. In 2015 he played about 30% of the snaps, 20 tackles, no FFs or sacks

Hicks played a little more, couple more tackles, had 3 sacks, a TD and is two years younger.

He also generated pressure on 10% of the pass plays...2nd only to Easley.

I think they need to pay him.

Hicks is an important re-signing IMO. Keeping him means your defense is essentially intact for next season, and allows you to focus your most valuable offseason assets (the early round picks and bulk of FA money) on solidifying the offense.

Without Hicks, DT becomes a much higher need.

I'm less optimistic about keeping Hicks after seeing somebody make the connection that Bob Quinn was responsible for bringing Hicks to NE but is now GM of the Lions, who desperately need to add multiple quality defensive tackles. We saw how beneficial great depth can be, but things get tricky if your 45% snap player is getting an offer from a team that wants him to play 70% of the snaps and pays him accordingly.

...and the Lions need to improve greatly vs the run.

In games that DET allowed more than 100 yrds they were 2-6. In games in which they allowed less than 100 yds, 5-3

My server at work is blocking the original post (I am guessing it is an embedded image) -- can anyone post what this thread is in reference to...

I do realize the easy solution to this problem would be to get back to work.:p

Well it's still the Lions so... Hicks may want no part of playing there if doesn't get severely overpaid I'd give the Pats a huge advantage if money is in the same ballpark..

#Packers and DT Letroy Guion have agreed in principle to a 3-year, $11.25m deal, per league source.

How old is Hicks? He came here in mid season, maybe with this half a season experience and full offseason program plus training camp, he may have a terrific season in 2016 and set himself to a different market than this "a little above average" level. If that's the case he would need to sign a 1 year contract like that Talib signed with us and bet in himself. In this case he needs to play for a contender who is in primetime more than the average. I like our chances. Detroit can only stand a chance overpaying and if Bob Quinn learned something with BB is to not overpaid.

I would probably do that same deal for Hicks. Hopefully he would take it.

Hicks is an important part of the current DT rotation and is entering the prime of his career at 26. Given how he played last season I'd be willing to pay up to $4.5 million AAV. It's a bit expensive for a rotational DT but Hicks was excellent last season relative to his contract. The rest of the money freed up from Jerod Mayo's contract could be then invested into another rotational LB/CB.

Nah. Hicks was good but that money is better spent elsewhere. Brown will be in his 2nd year and Easley will be back.

It's an Akeem Ayers situation all over again.

Not really, Pats had a player in mind that was an upgrade over Ayers, his name is Jabaal Sheard.

If the Pats let Hicks go then they are going to have to go sign another DT. So unless the Pats are going to be in for Wilkerson, Malik Jackson or Damon Harison (which the Pats won't be) then I don't really see anyone else that is worth bringing in. Maybe Nick Fairley..

Need 3 -man DT rotation that can play against the pass and rush (Brown, Branch, ?). While Easley can play against the rush I think for his longevity and effectiveness he is better utilized in a pass rush specialist role.

Cedric Thornton? Corbin Bryant?

I just think Akeem Hicks is going to get overpaid, and that BB won't want any part of that. We'll offer Hicks $2m-2.5m/year or so, and a team with lots of cap space will pay way more in the hope that he can be a full-time starter.
