NFL Owners in disarray as Goodell is losing control of the league

I'm sure this is good news for Goodell.

Super Bowl Hits Lows in Adults 18-49 — Sports Media Watch (<<Link)

Super Bowl ratings were the lowest in years among adults 18-49.

CBS coverage of Super Bowl 50 earned a 37.7 rating and 47.9 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic, down 4% in ratings and viewership from last year on NBC (39.1, 49.7M) and down 5% and 4%, respectively, from 2014 on FOX (39.7, 49.9M).

The game ranks as the lowest rated Super Bowl in the demo since 2009 (36.7) and the least-watched since at least 2007. Since hitting 40.5 and 52.5 million in 2012, ratings and viewership in the demo have dropped in each of the past four years.

The 4% decline in adults 18-49 slightly outpaced the overall dip of 2%. Ratings fell even further among adults 18-34, with the game earning a 33.3 rating — off 7% from last year’s 35.8.

Because he continues to make the owners record amounts of money.

Yes, and this might be more accurately stated as, "Because the NFL product has made the owners record amounts of money since Goodell has been in the job."

I don't think Goodell is seen as the primary cause of the success, but as one factor, and they don't want to upset the apple cart. And I think I read somewhere that he has a ridiculous golden parachute clause in his contract.

I've noticed that neither of my kids (30 and 33) care much at all about it anymore, after having grown up in New England and as Pats fans, nor do any of their friends, regardless of where they live.

Did they play football in school?

I wonder if the new soccer playing kids will affect ratings over the next 10 years.

Well, one is female, so no in her case. And the boy did not; he played basketball primarily, then had his most significant sports experiences playing on a NH high school volleyball team that won a state championship (!).

He was recruited at his college by the football coach to walk on as a defensive end/LB, and turned the offer down, because he was having too much fun doing other things and didn't want to risk it through injury. We had an interesting conversation about that at the time, and I completely supported his decision.

So with Goodell on the ropes and half the league fighting with the other half, Kraft still doesn't fight? Makes even less sense hearing that. There's no scenerio IMO win which laying down like a dog was the right thing to do. I don't give a damn if Mara told him he didn't have the backing, cut a deal, use leverage, rally against Goodell, go to the press with the jealousy angle, do what you have to do.

It'll keep happening unless the Pats are in it. I'm happy to see interest in the sport fall more precipitously and more quickly than I previously thought. I thought it would take years for the crap Goodell has pulled to start hurting the league but the Super Bowl may be an ominous sign going forward. If that keeps happening and interest keeps declining, I can only see Goodell's termination clause protecting him. After his contract is up, if things continue to go bad enough, I could easily see the owners ousting him. I once said that a gorilla wearing lipstick could run the NFL and make a profit. Apparently, Goodell and the NYJFL front office are THAT incompetent.

I know it's pretty obvious, but I'll say it anyways...their greed and egos will be their undoing if they don't fire the dipstick they currently have and hire one that will put the real integrity of the game 1st and not have to answer to the owners when upholding and enforcing the rules established by the league constitution and by-laws.

The owners are just as bad as Goodell. They handed him his contract and they keep pushing for aggressive expansion which will completely oversaturate the product. Americans don't like things being shoved down their throats at every turn. The NFL is not infallible and is no exception to that truth.

Great insights and questions that I also have.

There are a number of reasons which IMO NFL ratings will continue to decline.

-Soccer: Interesting take here Future of Soccer vs Football - GoalNation
-Concussions: I don't think this requires more explanation
-TV: More people are online/in their phones than watch TV
-Time: I believe we will continue to see less and less people allot 4+ hrs to watching a game. Too many other entertainment options and it will only increase.

The early part of this season featured some truly bad football. The SB was not all that great of a game to watch. Does the league recognize any of that? I always assumed that most owners are fans of the game, but maybe others in this thread are right: they're just fans of money.

I know the NFL set a viewership record on Week One but my god. In the 30+ years of watching football I cant remember so many abominations of games. I think the reasons were all over the place. Too many penalties. Bad QB play. Bad team play. Bad coaching. Bad announcing. The overall quality just was incredibly erratic.

Goody in his presser said something to the effect of this year having the most # of competitive games ever. So what? For those of us who love football, there is a grace to it. There is a "wow" factor that we appreciate. Just because a game is competitive doesn't mean its watchable.

There was no clearer summary of the NFL's abject grab-assery this year than the Pro Bowl. I literally saw 20 seconds of it (they didn't TACKLE on defense!) and that embarrassing clown show confirmed how far Goodell will stoop in making a mockery of things.

You're so right -- EVERYTHING was bad in the 2015-2016 season, both off the field and on. It's like the league is being run by delinquent chimpanzees with ADHD.

im going to suggest that goodell has NOTHING to do with it.

unless roger goodell invented fantasy football that is.
Honestly, if it wasn't for the growth of fantasy, the NFL numbers would be far worse. Goodell has probably hurt the business of the game as much as he's hurt everything else he touches. When the owners smarten up to that, watch out.
