Pats Dante Scarnecchia returns as OL Coach

The whole sign Dante story has to do with the underlying believe that he can make chicken salad out of chicken crap.. and for some reason that has worked in the past..

If he does come back envision that he will take on someone as an assistant to learn his methods which can be replicated..

My personal hope is that he can make chicken salad out of some newly acquired premium meat, and make it good enough to compliment the artisan bread that is our QB.

Maybe that is part of the discussion/negotiations. "Bill....You've got to let me draft a guy in the 2nd round".

:D

but, how do we know it is chicken crap? judging by the firing of googs, the coach was making chicken salad into chicken crap.

a talented superbowl winning center like stork REGRESSED in his second year and gave away the snap count every play. that is coaching, not talent. and some coaches are just better with getting the most out of their talent.

The good news is that he wants to come back instead of being convinced to come back, that generally doesn't work well.

About Googs it's hard to know what really happened but the rumors about not having total control on his unit and not being able to work the OL towards the direction he wanted plus the awful performances against Jets, Miami and Denver makes it pretty clear that there was a problem coaching wise. I'm just not convinced there is not a problem talent wise. There are some decent O-Lines doing a good job around the league without spending tons of money or picks, it's not rocket science, we have a QB that can read a defense like no one and process a lot of information really fast, he is also the reason why the O-line looked good for half the season when he was getting rid of the ball fast. They should be able to provide the minimal protection and they couldn't even do that.

#1 Need is to bring a top left guard and go from there, that will solve 2 problems, the position per see and Solder's play also improve having to worry only about his assignment, I also think he plays better with a established LG at his side, when Mankins was traded Solder's play was affected by that and took some time to adjust. The center should also benefit from that.

#2 Draft a tackle who can play both sides, if that's not available draft one dedicated to one side and try to grab a cheap swing tackle in FA like Will Svitek a couple years ago. It's not the best solution but it's difficult to have 2 quality backups one for each side. Counting on Solder or Vollmer to make it 100% healthy through the season is very risky. OK, Solder just had his first serious injury but he's a veteran with a good amount of years playing in the league, cancer survivor, his kid unfortunately was dealing with cancer too, I haven't read anything about it but I hope he is OK, anyway Solder can have a down year at any moment considering all these facts. Vollmer is getting up there in age and has an injury history.

#3 I think between Jackson and Mason, with Scar coaching, we will have a decent situation at right guard still under development. I don't know if Wendell will return, maybe on a cheap contract and I don't know what to think about Kline.

#4 I'm ok giving another chance to Stork and Andrews at center who should benefit from a better coaching and a more stable line (fixing the left side). That's a work in progress for me. I just don't know if there is room for both with maybe the addition of some new linemen. At the same time some will leave so in the end I think we can keep both.

#5 Cannon should not return and if they can put Fleming on the practice squad OK, if not, time to move on.

#6 I expect a major move in the Offensive Line either by trading someone or bringing a high paid player, I would be very disappointed with some standard moves and just changing the coaching staff. Let's see how this will play out. If we had a first round pick I would not be surprised on BB using this pick to draft a tackle.

I'm clearly in the minority but I don't think Cannon is the second-coming Eugene Chung and can be a pretty decent RT. When Vollmer went down in 2013 he played pretty damn well. In 2014 they tried to move him inside and was all messed up. Last year he was very spotty (he was OK v DAL until he got hurt) and very bad (see AFCCG).

He may be an example of where bad coaching might have really confused him.

I also wonder the same thing about Stork.

Under Scar, I expect improvement from Stork, Cannon, Fleming, and Kline. The extend of which remains to be seen, of course.

Moreover, second-year leaps from Mason, Jackson, and Andrews would not surprise me either.

Add a solid veteran guard and/or swing tackle (not sure how they feel about Waddle), perhaps draft picks, and I think the offensive line can really improve in 2016.

Be that as it may, the team really needs to address the running back position, via free agency, the draft, or both.

Maybe you're right, hopefully you are. He has shown flashes in the past and Bill obviously has liked him enough to keep him around on a not-that-cheap basis.

Having said that, he's been pretty awful most of the time for awhile now. It could be that he's gotten so messed up he won't ever get back to where he was. We will see.

I know....No question he has had stretches of disastrous play. He could easily be a lost cause. I think Scar will figure that out real quick.

Cannon is a veteran in this league, he should not be totally lost like he is sometimes doesn't matter who the coach is.

I think he is a case of a player who had a good year and then, well, he had good year. Hundreds of players have 1 good year out of 4 in the NFL.

Exactly: Scar would have to suit up to help Marcus Cannons play and we know that ain't happening. Time to move on Cannon does nothing well out there.

Often, the best way to do reporting is to ask questions that elicit revealing answers, and be a stenographer for same. Even if your sources' opinions aren't 100% correct, you've clearly moved the discussion forward.

Guregian's piece based on interviews with Matt Light and Damien Woody is a good example.

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...rnecchia_s_return_should_be_boon_for_patriots

The most revealing part may be where Light suggests that Googs just didn't work as hard as Patriots coaches generally do. The article also relies on Matt Light's previous comments about the silent snap count.

Quibble about the duration if you want but this is a patch and someone better be getting trained up to replace Scar while he's here. If he's here; no confirmation yet that I've seen.

Guregian cites unspecified "sources" that flat-out say Scar is coming back.

That said -- unless there's a signed contract or binding handshake, all that the sources could possibly be accurately saying is that the parties to the negotiation are confident it will be successfully concluded.

Sorry, that's the old one. Patriots' negotiators' transcript, 2016, now available:

I don't think cannon is adequate as a swing tackle. I'm no expert, but he's fat and slow. Why not have him lose some weight and see if he can back up guard and tackle?

It comes to a point that you can't keep working around a players weaknesses, especially a backup.

He's not athletic either so losing weight isn't going to help

Pats in talks with Dante?
He must be a very chatty fellow because BB's not a big talker.
Oh wait, Dante probably casually mentioned some game from the 70s and BB got sidetracked for 4 days reminiscing over play by play.

Now it can be told... the phone call that counts as talks...

"Well he was part of some offensive lines, some special lines, where every one of them did what, well, anytime you block a play in a way where there's no hole, no flaws, it's very difficult to defend, especially when Tom, when he's on. There are always things you can do better, sometimes maybe an end gets by with a swim move, sometimes you don't get under his pads, get that first punch, your stance is a little wide, every big game turns on a handful of big plays, and big plays can turn on who laced his cleats right, so Scar knew that, and any time Scar is on that field, on that practice field, you know, you see him with five guys and turning them into a unit, it's a team inside a team, and any tme you have that happen, it's like they're a unit, not five individuals. When that happens more often than not you win, and Scar, anytime Scar is on that sideline, on that field, on that practice field that's what you'll get. That's what we always got, and that's what Scar is capable of, so that is the value of having a Dante Scarnecchia in the mix. Have I talked to Scar? We talked about fishing and Bon Jovi."
