It's easy, and only takes a few moments.I think the versatility plays a big part in it, and a guy like Chandler Jones would likely be an ideal fit in Belichick's mind, minus the inconsistency and probability that he's lower on the list of current priorities. The ability to play both standing up and with his hand in the dirt is appealing, as is moving him around inside/out. Keep in mind that we still have at least 2 of those types of players with Ninkovich and Sheard, and that's if you don't count someone like Hightower who can line up on the line at times, as well. I don't know if we can really include someone like Easley due to the difference in size, but I don't believe that these are the types of players that you're asking about anyways.
As far as drafting/FA pickups go for pure pass rushers with little else to offer, I don't think we'll see that too often, aside from maybe hitting the bargain bin on a FA past his prime. Setting the edge and stopping the run are KEY traits to have on this team, as you must be able to do your job effectively. That said, I wouldn't count out taking a later round flier on someone, either, but I don't think it will happen in the first 3-4 rounds by any stretch of the imagination. Just my opinion.
Yeah I have always felt that about Bill
Because the patriots defensive scheme is less aggressive scheme they show a lot of different looks and coverages nickel sometimes 4-3 and 3-4
I think those "shiny pure passrushers" that you're speaking of would be nice to have, but it doesn't make a ton of sense to waste an early round selection on them unless you've got the rest of your front seven worked out nicely. I think it's a bit of a luxury, but there are plenty of teams who jump on players like that all the time.
I'm still fully convinced that we'll be taking another LB in the first 4 rounds of the draft, but I may be way off with that thought. I think we'll need depth to replace Mayo, and it will also be great to add another young, fast piece to the defense, particularly during a period where we can use them as leverage in the upcoming Collins/HT negotiations (on some lesser level).
I think we have 15 years worth of history on the type of edge player BB likes.I Remember reading that Bill does like players like Clay Matthews and Mario Williams
I know he coached Lawrence Taylor but Taylor was versitale
But overall how does bill feel about 3-4 OLB who just rush the passer majority of downs.
In Bill we trust
Bill likes them to set the edge
Arrogance and disrespect, where's the public apology?Remember when Chandler Jones was mic'd up for the Redskins game? Pre game huddle with the DLine, we heard him say "first we stop the run, then we have some fun!"
Thats all we need to know!

Questions....Bill likes them to set the edge
Questions....
How good is Vaughn Miller setting the edge?
Why not line Jamie Collins up as DE....like Miller.....both 6-3, both 250, Miller a tenth faster, Collins better vertical.
I get the versatility that Collins gives the LB corp...but I've been watching Miller singlehandedly destroy 2 MVP candidate QBs in the playoffs. Factor in NE's inability to get off the field on third down.....could Collins be NE's future edge rusher?
Of course lets wait till he signs a lesser LB contract before he gets redeployed (that BB....so damn devious)....
In primetime...aka...the playoffs.......NE opponents converted 18 of 37 3rd down attempts (49%) led by two of the least impressive QBs, Alex Smith and Noodle Arm.For what it's worth, New England was 10th this year in stopping 3rd downs. Room for improvement sure, but Denver was only 7th, so they were both in the same ball park. There are other metrics where Denver had them beat hands down, but I wouldn't consider 3rd down conversions to be a real concerning takeaway in this year's post-mordem.

NE's terrifying trio of defensive ends , Jones, Sheard, Ninkovich, tallied ZERO sacks in these playoffs.
On the other hand, the World Champion Broncos held playoff opponents to 7 third down conversions out of 42 attempts (17%). Denver's dynamic duo of defensive ends tallied 8.5 sacks.
Is that the same ball park?
