He is still under contract right now, but considering he was almost traded last year, and also that we had interest in him, I think there's a decent chance he may not be back for the Titans next year.

If that's the case, this is a match made in heaven. Could you imagine how good of a chemistry the McCourty twins could have in the backfield? I feel it would make both guys even better than they already are.

Agree with this. I think most of their focus in free agency should be on offense but if they can swing a deal for McCourty for a late round pick out get him after release it would be a great move for their young secondary. If Tennessee would move him for a fifth and they redo his deal it would work for me.

Why on earth would the Titans trade McCourty for a 5th?

Exactly. I know his brother is on the Pats but that doesn't mean you should go out of your way to get him.

was he actually "almost traded" or was that just speculation? I thought someone reported (Curran maybe?) that we were never actually in talks with Titans - he seems pretty tight with DMAC too... I guess where there is smoke, there is fire....

I also don't see much of a motivation for Tenn. to cut him?

I had thought that they wanted him and were in talks but the medical report on his groin precluded a trade. He was subsequently put on IR a couple of weeks after the deadline.

They save $7m on the cap if he is cut

Its more probable than not that...that the Titans cut him to save cap space if he doesn't agree to a restructure. In that case, sure why not sign him if they can, maybe they can convince his twin to give back the ridiculous amount of money the Pats pay him in order to sign him.

He is owed a base salary of $7,000,000 this year. The highest number of any Titan (BTW #2 on that list, Michael Griffin, just got cut). He has 1.8 mil remaining off his signing bonus, so cutting him would cost them 1.8 in dead money, but save them 7 million in actual money and cap space.

Tennessee Titans Salary Cap - Over the Cap

We're so used to needing CB but with Roberts coming back I'm not sure putting decent $$$ into CB. I get that some may not like Coleman and Roberts as the #3/#4 guys (in some order) but with Butler, Ryan, Coleman, Roberts I'm not sure this is a direction we'd go.

I'd see first what Roberts can do and if Tarell Brown can stay healthy.

Bulter/Ryan/Coleman/Roberts/Brown/Johnson is a pretty good start to the secondary.

Don't forget that Malcolm Butler is only making $600,000 this year and then is going to be due a serious payday! The Pats have 4 young great defensive players Chandler Jones, Jaime Collins, Donta Hightower, and Butler, that they need to lock up this year, (or at the very least lock up three of the four, so you can franchise the fourth). Jones and Hightower are both scheduled to count almost 8 million apiece against the cap (5th year option off their rookie deals), so extending them both will might even save the Pats some cap space this year. Hopefully the Pats pull a Gronk and resign both Butler and Collins this year, upping their salaries this year in return for lower salaries in the years after this than they would have gotten if they were allowed to go into free agency next year.

What if Jason also wants to wear No. 32?

There has to be a way to wrinkle your jersey during a game to make 33 look like 32. Or have him wear 23 to confuse the **** out of the dyslexics in the league....

10% of the population is dyslexic. 4% are severely dyslexic. Approximate 25 offensive players per team. That's 1 player per opposing team that would not be able to tell the difference between a CB and a S, and another 46 1/2 players throughout the league that would do a double take.

I can see where Bill's going with this.

Not sure I see the value in acquiring McCourty. I'm fine with Butler, Ryan, Brown and Roberts and a couple of low cost acquisitions or depth guys. Roberts' flashed major potential and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Not sure what the fascination is with Jason McCourty on this forum? Does his play really match up with the cost? I think he's a bit overrated around here.

I'm all up for drafting another CB and/or getting a value signing like we did with Tarrell Brown last year.

Edit: sorry, Aus.

I can't speak for the the actual decision-makers, but the Titans fans seem to think he's an important player moving forward. Here we're talking about accepting him if the Titans are looking to get rid of him for cheap, and then there's a Titans fan who includes him as one of the Titans' top 7 players.

Let's say he gets cut. What would he want? I estimate at least $5.5 million a year. I don't see the point of doing it. As much as I'd love to have both McCourty twins here we already have a talented group of DBs. Both Butler and Ryan were excellent (albeit inconsistent, but that's something they could fix with more experience) and Tarell Brown, Roberts, Coleman are good as backups. We really don't need another CB unless he is elite (ex. Revis, but those types of players would be out of our budget).

Let's say we trade for him, who do we give up? I think a 3rd round pick would be the minimal that the Titans would want, and we'd also need to dump some salaries as well. We really don't have anyone at the moment that the Titans would want anyways. It's not worth the trade.

Unless JMac is willing to take less than $4 million a year, I would say no.

Assuming a $154m salary cap, they've got $29m in cap space before taking into account carry forward / incentive adjustments. Why do they want to get rid of him? Overpaid for what he provides? Maybe, but he's one of their better players. Former Pats scouting head Jon Robinson is the GM now - if anyone's going to value a guy like him, it'll be someone who worked under BB.

Basically, I understand why McCourty could have been on the block in October prior to his injury diagnosis. But given the fresh new regime now, I think it's more likely they'll want to keep him now instead of trading or cutting him,

Just my opinion. Would love to be wrong here; I think more veteran depth at CB would be very helpful considering that neither Butler nor Ryan are under contract for 2017 at this point among other reasons.
