Pats Dante Scarnecchia returns as OL Coach

This is not a solution, but a patch. I'd love Scar back but I hope there's a designated successor put in place along with him who can be ready a year hence.
I agree. Is he the only guy who knows how to coach a O-line or is it that Dante allows Bill to go "cheap" at that position?

I'd have to imagine another coach paying a whole helluva lot of attention this year to Scarnecchia, if he's even brought back. There would be a much better succession plan this time around, in my opinion.

Also, I'm not sure that we can blame them for being cheap, particularly with the pacts signed by Solder, Vollmer, and even Cannon. Hell, even Ryan Wendell is currently the 11th most expensive OL hitting free agency, judging by his 2015 cap hit.

I agree with you that they've been able to get by without dedicating as much money as some other teams, but we have 2 bookend tackles that are making very good money at LT/RT. Either way, we're in agreement that there needs to be more resources dedicated at the position.

Thats really the way to look at it. TB12 will be 39 next year and since they aren't getting rid of the kids they need to be coached up.

No doubt that "now is the time," but one can argue that they'll take advantage of Scar's scouting/drafting ability just as well by taking a couple picks in the upcoming draft.

If that's the case, I wouldn't go making any major purchases if I'm Jackson or Mason. If they're able to be coached up, great. If not, we'll have our asses covered better than last year.

True. I like Shaq and Jackson but they by no means locks to start next year

Unless this is a one year deal, I don't see how you come to your conclusion.

Why? He's a year younger than Wade Phillips, who didn't do too shabby a job this year (though he had a lot of weapons to work with) and is planning, as far as I know, on coming back next year. OL Coach is a lot less stressful than DC. Why would it have to be a one year deal, if his health is OK?

Watching the Denver debacle it's obvious Tom badly needs protection.
Time for Gisele to take one for the team and make Ol Scar an offer he can't refuse?

Watching all of Denver's playoff games it was clear to me that you have to have running backs who can get outside so you can run at Ware and Miller, otherwise they simply tee off on the QB with no reason to set the edge and take on blockers.

Quibble about the duration if you want but this is a patch and someone better be getting trained up to replace Scar while he's here. If he's here; no confirmation yet that I've seen.

Would love to see the Patriots make a run at Florida St OL coach Rick Trickett. But honestly, what could the Patriots offer him besides the oline job and assistant head coach title. Pretty sure he is next in line to get the big gig at Florida St as soon as Jimbo Fisher falters.

No matter how many times you make that claim, it's not going to be anything but speculation until a contract is/isn't signed. For that matter, it won't be anything but speculation even if a deal is reached.

Why, because he's 67? Phillips is 68, Carroll is 65, BB is 63.

They're all patches. Nothing in the NFL is guaranteed a year down the line, and the biggest "guarantees" (long-term player contracts) are often the biggest disasters. 2 years is a long time.

One thing I learned this season after looking back Nate Solder did alot more for this Team than just protect Brady's blind side. This Oline coudn't block a fly after he went down...they were creating no holes whatsoever for our RB's. But on the otherhand they were creating plenty of holes for DE's and DT's.

It's not necessarily Jackson or Mason who should be renting instead of buying, at least not now.
Kline, Cannonfodder & Cam Fleming should already be packing their bags.

Kline just signed an extension . He isn't going anywhere

This may have been brewing for a while hence why deguglielmo was not renewed

I agree that Cannon and Fleming have one foot out of the door, for sure. Those positions need to be upgraded.

I'm okay with Kline, who was actually looking much better than anyone envisioned prior to his injury. I think he can be an adequate backup, but we'd all like to see him upgraded as a starter.

I'm fine with continuing trying to develop Jackson/Mason, but I also wouldn't avoid trying to upgrade the position just the same, especially if Wendell won't be coming back. I'd be very tempted to make a move in free agency and the draft as it pertains to the OL in general.

The whole sign Dante story has to do with the underlying believe that he can make chicken salad out of chicken crap.. and for some reason that has worked in the past..

If he does come back envision that he will take on someone as an assistant to learn his methods which can be replicated..
