Pats Dante Scarnecchia returns as OL Coach

I suspect that sans this past season's ridiculous injury situation DeGuglielmo might still be OL coach.

It's difficult to determine exactly what went wrong with the OL in the AFCCG -- how much of its failure came from injuries and consequent lack of cohesion and how much of it might have been DeGuglielmo not having them properly prepared.

I don't remember the season - but remember the group around five years ago that lost four centers? Maybe 2009 or 2010. Something like Koppen to Wendell to Connolly to someone else. That was under the Scarnecchia regime and they didn't miss a beat.

During the big Super Bowl runs the Pats had a right tackle of the season. Ryan O'Callaghan, Nick Kaczur, Tom Ashworth, Adrian Klemm, Tom Ashworth, Kenyatta Jones, Greg Robinson-Randall. Remember Warren Sapp making fun of Russ Hochstein when Damien Woody went down? All those lines were fine, and they faced as much injury or turnover as this one.

While the team faced several losses on the line, they were not notably worse than when Mankins held out, or the loss of multiple centers.
Lost the top left tackle - but had their highest-paid back-up player in Cannon available, and Denver lost their left tackle as well and adapted.
Lost a rookie rotational guard - but the other one was available, and Kline was clearly a favorite based on his playing time before the injuries.
Lost a veteran back-up guard, but many were arguing for his release earlier.

I think the injuries were significant, but the group Vollmer-Mason-Stork-Kline-Cannon is probably close their desired group - and had time to work together over the last month or two of the season. The problems were deeper than just injuries.

2011...Koppen started, Connolly, Wendy, Nick McDonald.

BB+Scar+McD+Patricia. At least keep it that way until Brady retires.

I just have a hard time believing DeGuglielmo suddenly spit the bit after the year he had in 2014, when he also earned praise for doing some "baling wire and duct tape" work on the OL himself.
I think Gugs was in the process of spitting the bit in '14 and was given some forceful 'guidance' to quit with the experimentation. It was only after his coaching was 'adjusted' that the Oline was righted.

I understand that but it still makes no sense to me. Daboll had a year of experience with all OL players and intimate view on how Dante dealt with them and coached them up. They threw away an entire year of experience. And not only that but then they hire someone who is just not equipped to deal with Dante's projects ? Devey was a Scar project.. Cannon was playing good in 2013 when Vollmer went down and I still remember Scar being excited about him in that preseason TC. Since then he regressed severely.
This entire cluster**** was mismanaged at some point.

Googe never developed anyone. He got credit when the horrible 2014 line was "turned around" by googe, when it was really because two of scars UFA projects stabilized the line. He had to retire scar someday. Googe was an experienced coach, but ultimately he developed no one.

Best news in a while.

Kraft, pay the man big bucks!

So I really hope this is happening. Any news from the past 6 hours?

This is FANTASTIC news! It may only be for a year or two, but Dante will get the most out of the offensive line.

So is this official yet or not?!!?!

From what I'm reading both sides are "mutually interested" and are talking, but it's not yet official. Hopefully soon....

Thats really the way to look at it. TB12 will be 39 next year and since they aren't getting rid of the kids they need to be coached up.

Now is the time.

Let's not forget this the patriots offensive line in 2014 was good but no great they we're still over powered at times and got pushed backed into runners run blocking

Turkeyneck makes a good point that Scarnecchia might be back to help in a pinch while the OL coaching situation is re-set. He retired for a reason (he's 68) and being an assistant coach in the NFL is a demanding job, make no mistake.

OK, this is VERY speculative, but, when he commented on the Pats and DeGuglielmo parting company, BB said that they were planning on going in some different directions -- plural. That suggested to me that they were planning some kind of a job share.

Now I've no idea whether BB already had Scarnecchia in mind when he said that, but it wouldn't surprise me if they also recruited or re-assigned another coach to work alongside Dante.

That's the kind of thing I've been driving at vs. Scarnecchia returning to his old full-time role.

I'm on that speculation train also. I think Dante is coming back to help BB Jr. take over OL

There's no truth to the rumor the light on top of the Gillette
light tower is being replaced by an illuminated Geritol bottle.

Watching the Denver debacle it's obvious Tom badly needs protection.
Time for Gisele to take one for the team and make Ol Scar an offer he can't refuse?
