Pats In Talks With Dante to Return As OL Coach

Please God make it so.

The Patriots have an opening for an offensive line coach, and they have been in discussions with longtime assistant Dante Scarnecchia about coming out of retirement to fill the void. While Scarnecchia retired after the 2013 season, he has remained around the team, primarily helping with evaluations of college offensive linemen entering the NFL. Scarnecchia's willingness to discuss a return to the coaching staff in 2016 is an indication that his retirement from coaching might be short-lived, as it would be a surprise at this point if he isn't back on the Patriots sideline for next season.

Let the post AFCCG loss to Manning load em up offseason (2007, 2014) begin. :)

Wonder what the role would be. Seems like they wouldn't want him coming out of retirement into the gig full time. Perhaps he'd come in as an assistant and help groom the o-line coach of the future (perhaps Daboll?)

They should bring him in as a part time coach -- like analyze game film, show up to two practices a week, and coach on technique -- that way he gets to live most of the retired life if he wants to, and yet can still have a big impact.

This is not a solution, but a patch. I'd love Scar back but I hope there's a designated successor put in place along with him who can be ready a year hence.

Yes!!! :D And bring back Moss while you're at it!

Could be huge but i would hope they get someone younger in beside him to work with him that he can groom to take over.

I am guessing its a one year thing with them bringing up someone internally to work side by side to take over next year.

There is a god!!!

There are some people in this world who aren't built for retirement. These people are so driven and unfulfilled doing other things except what they are passionate about.

I hope they don't have to do that. He sounded like a guy pretty happy in retirement, and I think it would be sort of hard to go back. But obviously some upside to the idea. Great coach.

For all we know, he's still getting up at oh dark hundred.

Sounds good.

Also tells me that the whispers we heard about Googe not having full control over his unit with Dante still working out players and weighing in during the draft might really be true. Too bad that Caserio and BB screwed up that transition even though they had by all accounts more than enough time to prepare for it (see Scarnecchia, longtime Patriots coach, retiring).

The open question remain why make Daboll TE coach if he was shadowing Dante for over a year and then hire Googe. Yes, Goodsey left for the Texans creating a vacancy but why throw away a year of experience that Daboll had with the OL and Scar ? Also if you hire Googe you either give him control over his unit even if he has a different philosophical approach to build an OL than you or look for a different coach that does exactly what you want. Fortunately this blunder cost us only one very viable SB year but without Butler's magic it could have wasted two big chances at rings.

You all out here that like to criticize BB for some of his decisions this year.. this is your chance to criticize him for something that he obviously screwed up.

What exactly did BB screw up? Not moving Daboll to OL last year or not being able to successfully replace the GOAT OL coach?

Offense Coordinator? What happened to Josh?

Read my post.

He first had Daboll shadow Dante for an entire year, then when Goodsey left he suddenly made him TE coach despite being around Scar and the OL for over a year. Then he decided to hire outside but didn't give the coach he hired enough power and control to actually make decisions and built the kind of OL that he wanted. Googe was obviously the wrong person to coach "Scar" type players and yet we drafted even more of those prototypic players.

Like I said.. either stay true to the "Scar" philosophy of OL players and find a coach who can do exactly that or hire outside and go all in on what the new coach wants to do. There are no half measures.
