Let the trade speculation begin!

Would we lose it straight away or can we trade down past 29 and pick up other picks if the pick was this year

How would we lost it right away?

We lose the highest of our 1st round picks this year, which means that trading for any pick above #29 would mean we get #29. It's not clear when this goes into effect. So you could envision a scenario where:

1) Patriots trade Garoppolo to Rams for 15th overall pick.
2) Patriots trade 15th overall pick to literally anyone above 29th pick for a player or other picks, such as Seahawks for Marshawn Lynch.

In this scenario, for instance, you'd be getting the 29th pick and Marshawn Lynch for Jimmy Garoppolo. Replace Lynch with a 2nd rounder or 3rd and 4th rounder as appropriate. The Rams get Garoppolo and one team above 29 gets to move up 10+ slots for a discounted price. Works out for everyone, except maybe the Rams who gave up a mid-1st for Garoppolo.

Obviously this won't happen but it's fun to muse.

Could you post the link to the sanctions because all I've seen is that we lose a 1st rounder this season and 4th rounder next season.

I think the punishment called for a 1st round pick, not our original 1st. So we would lose the pick we traded for and regain our original.

Edit: @primetime explained it better.

Here's a thought - Jimmy G to Cleveland for their second round pick plus Gordon should he be reinstated. The pick would very nearly be first round level.

JAG was a 2nd round pick, so you don't want to trade him away for less at this point. So, if you want to speculate, here you go:

JAG for the #33 and a 2017 4th, and that pretty much means that you only lost a backup QB, and cash, in the deflategate scandal. Then bring back either Cassel or Hoyer, and you can use 2017 to look for your QBOTF.

Of course, if the team is already sold on JAG as the QBOTF, such speculation is wasted.

Does Tom's Massachusetts home have an in-laws cottage where they could stick Gordon, in order to keep an eye on him?

I think Tom, Jules and Gronk would definitely take Josh under their collective wing... His situation has never struck me as anything overtly negative but simply a young guy making too many dumb decisions coupled with an overly harsh league policy (surprise, surprise.) With good coaching and leadership, he could thrive. It's worth a roll of the dice IMO considering the relatively tiny cost.

Yep, the fact that Hoyer & Cassel are both kicking around out there is good. I think Hoyer would be cheaper.

I say we trade down from the first round....

oh wait....

I'm all for taking a Flier on Gordon.

This is laughable! Grop for Murray and a 4th? Nope, wouldn't take an ineffective 8 mil cap hit RB for our QB. Now if its for their 1st rounder, that maybe something to think about!

NFL Trade Machine: Jimmy Garoppolo for DeMarco Murray

Not that I would do the trade at all, but we might be able to get a first rounder for #10. and what a great way to put a stake through the heart of Goodell, Vincent and the 31 spoiled billionaires. Maybe that is 30 owners and I will explain.

We are not even allowed to trade into the first round I understand.
If a Team wanted Aladdin that badly, a deal could still be done to really stick it up someones anal pore.

Patriot Operator:
Mr. Belichick . Call for you on line.....whatever.

BB:
(To unnamed G.M.) "You want our backup QB?"

Team X:
"Yes Bill. What will it take?"

BB:
"A first rounder."

Team X:
"(laughs) Bill, Roger has you bent over hard. I can't give you a number 1 this year?"

BB:
"Yes you can."

Team X:
"How?"

BB:
"We make the deal. I will inform you who I want in your slot. You Draft him and we 'Trade' after the Draft."

Team X:
"Roger and Vincent will flip!!!!! They will try to find some B.S. to nail us too ! Kensil will have a stroke!!!"

BB:
"It is what it is!"

......"And I want your Special Teams guy too cause I'm pissed!...Well maybe a WR."

Unfortunately, there's a problem with that: there's a rookie salary cap (a limit on how much of the overall salary cap can be spent on drafted rookies and bonuses for UDFAs).

The existence of the rookie salary cap isn't the problem; the problem is that the rookie cap allocation is based on the picks used by that team in the draft.

IOW, in your scenario, the salary cap allocation for that first-rounder stays with the team that drafts him.

We can trade any of our players who would command a first round pick on the open market (a smaller group than people realize). Roger Goodell cannot, and did not, take away our ability to make trades. What he did do was prevent what happened in 2008 from happening again, as we lost our first rounder due to penalty, but still selected at #7 (then traded to #10) from the SF trade.

In other words, as many have mentioned, the highest selection we can have in the first round would be our own at #29, and that would have to come via trade.

I really can't see the team trading Jimmy g a year after taking him in the second
