Should Pats extend Brady?

Question for someone smarter than me (yes I tried google but it wasn't clear):
Tom's current contract is "guaranteed for injury only"
Cap number for 2016: $15m
Cap number for 2017: $16m

Scenario: Brady is split in half on opening night 2016 (I'm looking at you Stork!). Does the guarantee refer only to the fact that they would still owe him $31m in CASH, or would it also be true that he would count on the CAP as dead money for any future years?

If brady is still on this team in 2018 what do we do about garoppollo? We need someone to take the reigns from brady once he retires other wise if brady plays past that and garoppollo leaves once brady retires its gonna be the 70s/80s/90s patriots all over but im pretty sure if they keep brady theyll have a plan in set for when he retires to keep this team afloat

I think people need to at least accept that there might not be anyone good enough to accept the reins. Hopefully it's Jimmy G, or somebody, but not every team has a Steve Young waiting to replace Joe Montana. More often than not, it's Brian Griese replacing Elway, or Todd Collins (a 2nd-rounder) to replace Jim Kelly, or Jay Fiedler for Dan Marino.

At the time, Dolphins fans must have been throwing up watching Fiedler after 17 seasons of Marino, only to wish for the Fiedler era after watching guys like Gus Frerotte, Joey Harrington, and Cleo Lemon?!?

Jimmy G could win a Super Bowl, 2 MVP awards, make multiple Pro Bowls, and he'd still be nowhere close to Brady. Oh right, those are Aaron Rodgers's career awards...sorry, why is he in the conversation with Brady for best QB?

So you hope someone is ready to take over for Tom when the time comes, but there's a real possibility there's nobody close to what we've had. Enjoy each day. It will probably never get better than this.

Succession of greatness is almost always difficult and frustrating for fans. Rodgers/Favre and Young/Montana are great but you're right it's certainly not the norm. Overthinking the transition is problematic for organizations as well as fans. Honestly if asked, I wouldn't want to watch Brady play like Manning did this regular season...but look what happened in the end. That's not a bad coda. Let the man play. As much as anyone, Tom BUILT this. When he sucks, he'll go. Has he given you a reason not to take him at his word? Whoever is here at the time is the next guy. He might be Aaron Rodgers. He might be Jeff Garcia. He might be Ryan Mallett. You really do never know. Andrew Luck is basically Jay Cutler as a player and looks just as stupid, but one's on TV as the second coming and one's a pariah, go figure.

I grew up in IL as a Bulls fan and to this day I've never seen an organization more guilty of overthinking the transition than they were in the late 90s. As soon as the 2nd 3-peat run got started they were all ahead of themselves trying to figure out how to rip it apart and rebuild it to prove it was the organization - not Jordan and Pippen - that ran roughshod over the league for the better part of a decade. To this I give BB credit for always deflecting credit to the players - they do PLAY the damn game. The Bulls were even staring down a 50-game lockout season in 1999 that would have perfectly shortened the season for their older(ish) team but let MJ and Phil Jackson retire, traded Pippen, and let the ****ing 1999 Knicks make the Finals as an 8 seed anyway. You can't do that. It might be painful in the end. Might be. Watching a relatively well-tuned and healthy Brady take the biggest beatdown of his life last week was hard enough, watching it when it might actually be his fault in 4 years would be even harder. But if that came to pass, he earned the right to do it if he wants. There is no reason they can't win it all next year. When it gets to the end of the season and I can't say that, then it might be time to make a change. But that isn't here yet.

I honesty believe Garoppollo can keep the train rolling not as well as Brady but playoffs every year wise and super bowl hunt every year wise i think he can, you gotta remember they drafted this kid in the second round...

I respect your belief, really. But this fact means nothing. It might mean they think he's THE ONE. It might mean they knew Mallett wasn't really **** and a 2nd rd pick of a player they liked was better than any FA options.

It's like saying "you gotta remember...he wears number 10". Or saying in winter 2001 "you gotta remember...they just gave Bledsoe $100m". It was surprising they took him 2nd rd, yes. But that alone isn't worth remembering or placing arbitrary value on 2 years later.

Yes they should extend Tom Brady. I hope that this becomes official soon so I can sleep easier at night

I say ride'm 'til the wheels fall off!!

Then we can go 1-15, draft Brady's Son, and do it all again!!

"This guy" is Gary Tanguay. "This guy" is a failed screen writer and community theater actor. Gary Tanguay should be gotten gone with. He is a pimple on society's ass. He is the ultimate "look at me" media jackass...says/writes things just for controversy & clicks and I suspect this be article is more of the same...he got fired from Celtics telecasts, fires from Patriots broadcasts...why of why does csn still employ him???? One of the world's mysteries....

As opposed to drafting both O'Connell and Mallett in the third round?

They've drafted tons of players in the second round lately that haven't worked out, and I'm sure they had very high expectations for them as well. I'm not sure this necessarily means too much.

As long as Brady is playing at a relatively high level then we should extend him and make sure he retires a Patriot. He has earned that right ..

Unless Brady is planning to retire after the 2017 season, I think that they should either extended him or expect to look at trade offers after the 2016 season.

Set aside the fact that he was drafted in the second round.

Go back and watch him play. He looks the part, and he's certainly done more in his first two preseasons than any other QB the Pats have drafted.

I think we have good reason to feel optimistic about JG, although I'm not sure if he'll stay for a 2nd pact so it may not matter. At any rate, the fact that "they drafted him in the second round!!!" doesn't really tell me much, that's all.

He had a beauty yesterday...said TB12 is a tremendous QB only of things go perfectly. When they don't he is average. Needs to start stepping up when things do go perfectly...

Man he is such a friggan troll.

Put me in this camp:
  • Brady can be trusted more than most athletes to stop playing when he isn't very good any more (he's proud of his performance and has a rich life outside of football).
  • We will probably have to put up with a season of mediocre Brady while he and the rest of us figure out it is over.
  • There's no way to know if that season will be 2017 or 2022. I'm willing to find out through experimentation rather than prognostication.
  • I don't want him to ever play for another team. I'm putting sentiment in front of cold hard winning with this value choice.
  • And beside all that, Brady has earned a normal QB glide path out of the game, more than anyone else I can think of.

Course they should. Not only is playing as good as he ever has he or close to it but the guy takes amazing care of his body and overall healthy.

Am I the only one who doesn't care if Brady sucks when he is 42, 43, 44? I personally think he will retire when he knows his skill set has diminished but he has earned the right to play as a Patriot until he sees fit. 4 SB wins and going to the AFC Championship almost every year earns you that right.

Let me clarify... I am as much a Brady fan as a Pats fan. I think Brady is going to play at a higher level than most QBs until he is in his mid 40s.

All I am saying is .... as a Pats fan I am willing to deal with a not so great season or 2 if and when Brady reaches the point where he should retire. I want Brady to retire a Patriot no matter what and if that means putting up with a bad season or 2 than so be it.

It's an interesting dilemma. If the Packers didn't have such a player as Rodgers, Farve was still a playoff contending QB in the final years. Imagine how smoothly his story arc would've ended staying there instead of his seasons in Minn and NY?

And then Manning gave the Broncos a miserable year of play and is in the Superbowl in his final season. Colts fans go their new QB, but their "guy", their "legend", moved on and went to two superbowls.

Aesthetically, as a fan, I like your idea. Let Brady play here even if he regresses by 50%. He'd still be better than most starters in the league.

I'll take the story over the wins. And frankly, whomever the Pats draft or hire to replace him will be a crap shoot anyways.
