patriots are terrible at drafting wr

I love these insightful threads.

OK but they are pretty decent at trading for, or and signing them as FAs.

drafting WR is a crap shoot...

disappointments first round alone:
kevin white(2015)
nelson agholor(2015)
breshad perriman(2015)
philip dorsett(2015)
tavon austin(2013)
coradelle patterson(2013)
justin blackmon(2012)
aj jenkins(2012)
jon baldwin(2011)

Maybe more experienced WR's are just better off in our offense. Although, they did draft Deion Branch Julian Edelman and David Givens. Not a who's who of top flight receivers, but all home grown WR's with Super Bowl wins.

Great post. Agree 100% Evcen LaFell helps out for a year.

Maybe they should go into their crystal ball and make sure the WR settings are turned on?

steelers are king at finding wr's.

antonio brown, mike wallace, sanders, weaton, bryant, coates made some plays against denver..

shessh. wish we had one of those guys. all are later round picks as well. we get stuck with dobson and josh ****ing boyce

All evidence to the contrary....

In recent years it had been good.

2015- No one.
2014- LaFell
2013- DA
2012- Lloyd
2011- Ocho- awful.

No, it hasn't been good in recent years. You're making a 1:1 assumption that doesn't exist. Unless you want to be generous with Amendola's rating (not a crazy thing to do, but he could go either way, depending upon your POV and initial expectations), they haven't had a free agent WR who was more than a 1 year 'success' since Gaffney, and his success was two years with catch numbers in the 30s.

And C. Johnson was a trade

What is the 1:1 assumption that doesn't exist?

If you sign a player and he produces than it was a good signing. If the player does not produce than it wasn't.

Seems like you rate by a different standard of success than I do?

Correct on Ocho.

That those are the only WRs FAs who were signed in those offseasons.

Yes.... I rate by taking the actual number of FAs and the number of FA successes, and going from there. And, about your list of 'successes', to note:

  1. Lloyd - Not brought back after one sesaon because he wouldn't accept the cut of an already team friendly salary
  2. LaFell - While the book on him is certainly not yet closed, I don't think I really need to talk about this season
  3. Amendola - See above post

Even the players you pointed to haven't really been successes*.

*Again, unless you're being generous with Amendola's grade, in which case you'd have 1 real success since from 2007 to the present.

Based on your criteria I am being generous. I'm keeping it simple. Neither DA, LaFell or Lloyd fall in the Donald Hayes, Galloway, Ocho category.

I would also put Stallworth and Caldwell in the "success" category. They were only here a year but did well.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Belichick suggested to Dimitroff that trading up for Julio Jones was a bad idea since Jon Baldwin was nearly as good and would be available later in the round. So let's just say I'm glad that the Pats weren't picking there and looking for a WR in 2011.

As for the others, Austin is good good for what he is. It was pretty clear what kind of player he was when he was drafted, and the fact that the Rams were unable to make much of him until this year is a testament to how bad their organization has been. I thought drafting him where they did was a reach, but if you're intent on reaching him you can at least use him correctly.

Still way too early to make any kind of a call on White, the guy hasn't played in the NFL yet. Same for Perriman pretty much, although FWIW I strongly believe that he will end up being a bust. White has better odds, but I thought it would take him a year or two at best even before the injury, so he's not likely to change anyone's mind in 2016.

I also think Dorsett could be good in the right offense, but the right offense is one without TY Hilton, since they're essentially the same guy and they both have to play flanker (technically they can play slot I guess, but why would you want them to?). When they drafted him, I thought that meant they were letting Hilton walk and being proactive about replacing him... and then they signed him to a huge deal. I'm still not sure if that can really be blamed on Dorsett so much as top-to-bottom organizational incompetence. There are a handful of offenses where he could've been taken where he was and would've looked like a reasonable pick, Indy's just not one of them unless Hilton gets hurt.

The patriots are bad talent evaluators at the WR spot but yet the steelers money at it

Antonio brown was drafted in the 2010 draft in the 6th round pick 195 and he is now the best WR in the league.

Martavis Bryant was drafted
NFL draft: 2014 / Round: 4 / Pick: 118

Great deep threat with great speed good route runner plays like his height of 6 feet 4

Sammy Coates didn't play much but he will be a good WR

NFL draft: 2015 / Round: 3 / Pick: 87

the patriots missed on all these guys

It pains me every year teams find WRs and the patriots always have flops

I agree it makes me sick every year it seems like the steelers find a WR in the draft

And all there guys can run if they get into the open field they are not being caught

It'd prefer to give up on drafting them all together and just sign veterans. Have a decent track record with vets. If a late round talent is available then give em a shot but, I wouldn't bother in the first couple of rounds.
