OT: Cam Newton & the race card

definitely shows a culture gap

Cam's my favorite non-pats player in the NFL and it's not even close

and i suspect a lot of people who hate him do because....well he's outspoken and black and not afraid to be outspoken and black and have fun while doing it

and also a tryhard douche

you specifically complained about how he had 4 different kinds of celebrations but alright

I mention it as to why it bothers me. If it doesn't bother you that's fine. Different tastes for different people.

What really bothered me again was that he claimed people who criticized him were racially motivated.

ps Cam is probably one of the most team-oriented people in the NFL, the unit cohesion of the Panthers is as good as anything I've seen in the NFL since the 2001 Pats

sure, when they're winning everybody's a team guy having fun.

when times are a little tougher......?
he's moping alone at the end of the bench w/a towel over his head like a little kid

I will grant his teammates do seem to like him which couldn't be said for many of the others I brought up.

lmao man this thread just makes me love him even more, to be honest. he's pissing off all the right people

go cats

I said as much in the initial post about his teammates liking him. He hasn't pissed me off at all. I just think his using the race card is either misguided or disingenuous. The people defending him seem to be the ones getting pissed off. Maybe things in Charlotte are a lot different but I don't know one person who dislikes Newton because of the color of his skin.

which all makes it quite, quite easy to root for him

enjoy cam newton pissing you off hopefully it's going to happen for a decade ;)

I'm starting to get the feeling there may be a couple people out there rooting for him cuz of his skintone.

You're the second poster that believes there are racist posts in this thread, yet thus far, neither of you can point them out. That's because you can't no matter how much you huff & puff.

That tells us everything we need to know! Thank you for proving my point!

Would someone actually read through every single post just to see if anyone posted something r-r-racist? That would be mondo-bizarre, but entirely possible! I also wonder if you and Tony believe you have that special ability to "read between the lines"!!

What have I posted that makes you think I read between the lines? I haven't called anyone a racist.

Exactly so. And it's to Newton's credit that he's now saying, "I didn't mean it to come off as a race thing."

He realizes that he spoke imprecisely and is now correcting himself. I won't hold my breath waiting for some posters here to do the same. But one can always hope.

"I'm an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to,"

ok

Thanks for posting this. I've gone into my Patriots aren't in the Super Bowl bunker to avoid the media. It's hard to backtrack on (paraphrasing) I'm an African American quarterback and that scares a lot of people because they've never seen somebody like me.

Doug Williams won the SB almost 30 years ago. Russell Wilson was in the last two SBs. I liked and rooted from both of them when not playing the Pats.

It is hard to walk that back, you're right--it was a foolish thing to say. But he's a young man playing football, not a politician. It's to his credit he realized his mistake.

Again, it would be nice if others here would make similar mea culpas. But I suspect some may be feeling a little ashamed for what they've posted, so an abashed silence would work too.

I apologize Tony, it was Jackson2 I was referring to and that was bad on my part!

I'll be more careful in the future

Good point....if it's ok to root for him because he's African American, is it ok to root for Manning because he's white?

Fair question?

Are you saying you root for him partially because of his race?

It's an interesting topic beyond Cam's comment/retraction. Why should anyone feel ashamed? For what specifically? If The Donald retracted a stupid statement, would you feel ashamed for having criticized him? I wouldn't.

Is there a difference between a black racist and a white racist? Is that what you are asking?

I think there is.

You're misunderstanding me. I'm saying that anyone calling anyone else a racist based on nothing but their own feelings of anger should feel ashamed.

I disagree. People who hate everybody of a particular sect are just ignorant.

As an individual, I see no difference as either can be racist. As a whole, the only difference is which group is the majority or has more power.

Hatred knows no color

But my Point is that if it's acceptable to root for a player due to his/her being African American, then logic says it's just as acceptable to root for someone because they're Caucasian. Logic being the key word.

Especially in the NFL where Caucasians are the minority by a wide margin.

Otherwise, people would believe that it's only ok to root for any race that is not Caucasian. If some Caucasians hate Cam because he's black, that's pure racism just as if any black that hates Tom Brady because he's the pretty white boy must also be racist

I think only simple-minded (and wrong) people believe only Caucasians can be racists.

We have seen this past yr that a coverage can be slanted towards someone +vely and -vely making people pick how they want to feel. Not saying thats how everyone judges but it plays a big role. Newton has been the same last yr too..but since they are winning, there are more articles/debates about his 'antics' to stir debate .
The NFL is built on self promotion and grand loud celebration, chest thumping .exaggerated bravado and humility yet they make an issue out of it.
