My offseason plan for the 2016 New England Patriots

I just read the article moments ago, and I imagine that the following is a typo:

It is not a typo.

Projected Patriots Adjusted Cap - $158,736,007
Cap Commitment after tendering ERFAs - $153,419,971
Cap Space - $5,316,036

I never said that Dobson was a priority cut for cap reasons.

I wasn't saying you did I was explaining why I would keep him around. IIRC your reasoning was for potential injury reasons and the smartass in me is tempted to say that at least we won't have to worry about him hurting himself working out. To me the deep threat role is not a big deal for the Patriots, it is really just a tool to try and keep teams honest when they get too bold about getting up close on receivers.

Thanks.

But actually, there's a missing word, so it's a typo after all. :)

11:30 PM update – Noted that the $12.3 million should be enough to sign Brian Tyms, James Develin, Sealver Siliga, and Nate Ebner to deals for the 2016 season. -

Looking at each of these:
Brian Tyms: WR depth currently includes Edelman, Amendola, Martin, Harper, and possibly Dobson & LaFell, who might be released. A role for Tyms is probably related to the status of Dobson & LaFell. The presence of Martin & Harper pushes Tyms further down the depth chart.

James Develin: Sure. Bring him back. Belichick loves him.

Sealver Siliga: DT depth currently includes Brown, Branch, Easley, Jones, Vellano, Kitchen. Assume they will keep five. Siliga really fell off the depth chart the second half of the season. Jones' return might mean Siliga has a lot less value to the team. I would pass.

Nate Ebner: S depth currently includes McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Richards, and ERFA ST ace Brandon King. That's five, including four high draft picks. Brandon King eclipsed Ebner on special teams; Harmon and Richards can contribute on special teams as well. I would not chase the #6 safety with a lot of money.

I would be surprised if any of these players receive a significant offer from the Patriots. I would expect Develin back, and would not be shocked at Ebner or Tyms on veteran minimum-type short-term deals.

Miguel has said that these players are likely to be signed for $1M each or less. Ebner might be a bit more.

BTW, I would include Waddle on the list.

Even Brown can probably be had for $1M or so plus incentives.

Hightower is the captain/brains of the defense. I think the D would fall apart a lot faster without Hightower than without Collins.
Hightower has limped to the finish line in each of the last 2 seasons.
I would be very cautious before committing to a long extension with him, especially at the expense of
either Jones or Collins, both of whom I consider more worthy of those extensions because of their youth,
athleticism, and their game-changing ability now & in the future.

Great article. I'm not in favor of cutting Amendola's pay by that amount, I don't think he would accept it and I think he would be gone to a competitor in a heartbeat and it would come back and bite them in the ass. I do want them to redo his deal to a lower number with incentives though. If they can get that deal with Forte they should jump at it, I think it will take a little more but he's high on my list of free agents. I'm guessing it will take 3/15/ 10 to get it done. I also like the idea of going after Dwayne Allen, I think he had a down year but would be the best 2nd TE option out there and is affordable. As receivers go I would go after Marvin Jones but his market may be higher than his production warrants, Cincy had free agent issues and I would take advantage of that. Same goes for Denver and I would look hard at Anderson and Trevathan. As for Dobson I would carry him, through camp because it doesn't hurt them, to, do so, and I would extend Sheard but only through 2018. I would not trade Chandler Jones but would prioritize deals with Hightower and Collins of possible, if Collins balked I would then, try to sign Jones and tag Collins when necessary. I think the overall priority has to be going into next season with the strongest team possible and would not trade important pieces for picks that may or may not pay off down the road.

I'm really looking forward to this offseason, thanks Miguel for the hard work you do for this site.

Good stuff Ivan. Great work Miguel as usual. Real good.

My "appetite" might be slightly different Ivan.
Trying to think outside the box. I want to see two position changes. I want Chung as an outside line backer. He played many snaps this year as OLB anyway. He would fit like LaVonte David's role.

I want to see James White in a full camp as WR. He is bigger than Edleman and Danny.

On Offense, I think the Dobson experiment is done. Thanks for 2014 B. LaFell, but a CAP Cut there too. FA? I prefer Sanu because he will be cheaper than Jones. But I think the Bengals will keep one of Jones or Sanu. You are right on Jones Ivan. Someone will over pay for him with a bad WR Draft class and FA class. I think the Bears will keep Jeffery some how.

That leave CAP cuts or trades for WR/RB. Some say we need two. That is where I have White slotted as one of those WR. You now need a RB. And I agree you go after Matt Forte. Look at his catches as a plus. He had a 100 reception season himself. Arian Foster has been mentioned who might be a CAP Cut.

As a potential CAP Cut pick up, I like Mike Wallace as a fit. He solves the deep threat and has been healthy. It's if we can sign at reasonable $. Andre Roberts and Gracon of the Skins have been mentioned.

I like TE Coby Fleener. Over 50 catches the last three seasons. Tremendous speed at 4.45. Young and 6'6" red zone target (that Chandler was supposed to be) . I vision him as H back like in the AH days. Maybe then you are not desperate at WR and can hope one in the Draft is talented enough.

That leaves O-Line. OT Kelvin Beachum had an ACL early in 2015. He is young and was darn good protecting Big Ben. ACL should drive price down. He could be the future Volmer replacement. Next on my hit list is Stefen Wisniewski. Can play Guard and Center. He made a big difference in the Jags O-Line and would be an upgrade over the declining Stork and Kline. He has picked up his game and is still young. A good Draft pick here added and you have a better O-Line

Back to Defense. I will get booed for this but if you drop down Chung to OLB, you need a Safety not named Harmon. I go for Weddle. Not popular on this forum but a solid "Rodney" type pick up typical of BB. Remember, when Rodney was signed we were not in need of a Safety.

I resign Hicks at DT. No one on the line was playing any better toward the end of 2015.
DW Toys

So you fixed OLB, added more back end talent, and added DL depth. You have some CBs that can help on this years IR. IMO I am good on Defense with those changes.
